.SYNOPSIS...
A large ocean storm has moved farther offshore to the southeast
of Nantucket. This will move out to sea tonight and over the
weekend. Expect diminishing wind and rain tonight and Saturday
morning. A weak weather system and front will bring scattered
showers Sunday afternoon and night. Unsettled conditions will
return as a few fast moving systems push across the region from
Tuesday night through late week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
10 PM update...

Bands of light rain and drizzle continue to rotate south across
mainly eastern New Eng this evening. Mid level drying moving
into the region from the north per WV imagery and models
indicate this drying will overspread SNE from N to S overnight.
However, lots of low level moisture and while the low level jet
is weakening the axis of the jet will remain across SE MA and
Cape Cod. Expect occasional light rain/drizzle to continue in
eastern MA.

Will extend the wind advisory for Nantucket into the overnight
as soundings support gusts 40-50 mph here. Advisory allowed to
expire elsewhere along the coast, but still windy with 30-40 mph
gusts at times diminishing overnight.

Coastal flood advisory for Cape/Islands was cancelled as high
tide has passed and storm surge was a bit less than forecast.
However, astronomical tides are higher for the high tide Sat
morning so potential for minor flooding, especially at
Nantucket. Will evaluate for possible advisory early Sat
morning.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Saturday...

Upper trough moves out to sea, and high pressure ridge builds
over the northeast. This will bring partial clearing during the
day. Northeast winds will diminish through the day, but gusts
of 25-35 kt are still possible in the morning along the
coastline.

Mixing will reach 925 mb, with temperatures of 4-6C. This should
support max surface temps in the mid 40s to lower 50s, with
warmest temps in the CT Valley.

Saturday night...

An upper shortwave moves through the ridge, bringing an area of
clouds east from NY. Not enough moisture in the column to
suggest showers. Dew points will be in the 30s, suggesting min
temps in the 30s and lower 40s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* A weak disturbance and approaching cold front bring scattered
  light showers Sunday into Sunday night

* Dry, warmer than average conditions return Monday, cooling through
  late week

* Generally dry through mid week but a few weak systems may bring
  scattered showers at times, then more widespread rain chances
  around Wed/Thursday

Details...

Sunday...

A suppressed ridge of high pressure crosses the region on Sunday
bringing a welcomed warm-up as sfc winds turn out of the southwest.
Enough moisture will linger in the low levels that sun should still
be filtered by clouds, but more sun than Saturday. With weak warm
advection and some sun, temperatures should peak somewhat above
normal, in the mid to upper 50s. Fortunately for those along the
east coast where NE winds have kept them much cooler the last few
days, SW flow will allow these locations to warm up along with the
interior locations. Mid and upper clouds will increase by
afternoon/evening as aloft we see a shortwave moving through the
upper flow and sfc trough digging into northern New England. The
bulk of the best forcing/dynamics remains well to our north, and so
does most of the rain. However, there should be enough forcing ahead
of the cold front and marginal PVA at the mid levels to force some
showers over the higher terrain of western MA/CT in the
afternoon/early evening. These will spread east and diminish as
they do, into the overnight hours. QPF will be very light.

Monday...

Hard to complain about the weather on Monday when skies will clear
and temperatures spike into the 60s with light winds. This thanks to
an area of high pressure which moves in behind that trough.
Temperatures at 925 mb push up to 7C...similar to Sunday for areas
of western MA/CT but with full sunshine this should push temps
several degrees higher. Again, offshore winds will allow east
coastal MA to also enjoy the warm-up.

Tuesday through Friday...

Confidence in specifics for later in the week is rather moderate to
low, with large model solution spread. General consensus is that a
low pressure spinning over eastern Canada will bring a shortwave
rotating through the trough over our area bringing another shot of
rain around Tuesday night/Wednesday. Then we'll likely have a break
on Thursday and another frontal system for late in the week. Timing
of each of these disturbances will be refined as they approach.

clearing moves south into the region late in the day. A few
showers in Eastern MA first thing in the morning, but these
