Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA 146 PM EDT Wed Mar 18 2020 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure moves over the Northeast USA today, bringing mostly sunny and dry weather. Low pressure and an associated front will move over from the Midwest, bringing a period of precipitation across the region late tonight and Thursday. The precipitation may start as snow over the interior and rain along the coastal plain, but all areas should have rain by midday. Much warmer temperatures follow on Friday with more showers. A strong cold front crosses the region Friday night, followed by dry and colder conditions next weekend into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... 1 PM Update... Bumped up high temperatures a bit in comparison to the latest observations. Otherwise the rest of the forecast remains on track. Previous discussions... 7 am update... Not much change with the early morning update. Mesoanalysis shows the center of high pressure currently over western NY/PA bringing clear skies and light winds to southern New England. Previous Discussion... High pressure moves overhead today bringing subsidence and dry air. High level moisture increases during the afternoon, which would bring increasing cirrus and possibly some mid-level clouds. But the fair weather continues. The heating and light flow will also allow for a sea breeze to develop in the typical prone areas this afternoon. That would keep temperatures from warming to their full potential. Mixing should reach to at least 925 mb and possibly to 900 mb today. Temperatures at that level will be roughly 0C to -1C, sufficient to support max sfc temps in the upper 40s and around 50. && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/... The larger scale pattern shows a closed low over the Desert Southwest with the southern jet flow extending to the Great Lakes and Northeast USA. One weak shortwave ejects from this closed low today and races to the Northeast tonight and Thursday. This shortwave in turn supports a surface low that moves through the Ohio Valley and redevelops along the Southern New England south coast. The departing surface high pressure leaves a clear cold air damming signal over interior sections. Low-level ageostropic fields signal a 20 kt cold air drainage flow, although the NAM is a tad stronger at 30 kt. This drainage, the potential for evaporative cooling as the precipitation initially arrives, and the resulting vertical temperature profile together suggest precipitation starting as snow in the interior before changing to rain during the morning-midday. Precipitation would start as rain along the coast. The best chance for snow would be in the higher elevations of Western MA and the Central Hills. Timing is similar among the models, reaching the CT Valley 2-4 AM, Central Hills 4-5 AM, and Coastal Plain 5-7 AM. Precipitation amounts shifted a little lower on this model run, but still suggests 1-3 inches in the higher terrain of central and western MA. A thinner coating may be possible farther south and into Nrn CT/RI before changing to rain. Areas farther south and east will have mainly rain. The upper shortwave and surface low will shift east of Massachusetts toward Thursday evening. Expect the rain to taper off at that stage, although some lingering drizzle will still be possible. The surface low brings with it a 40-45 kt southeast jet at low levels. This may support surface wind gusts of 25-30 kt along the South Coast Thursday afternoon and evening. The low level flow and 950 mb temperatures suggest max temperatures in the 40s. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... Highlights... * Another area of showers Thursday night and Friday with unseasonably mild temperatures * Dry and colder next weekend into Monday * Next chance for precip around late Monday/Tuesday Details... Thursday night and Friday... After a lull in the rain Thursday evening as the coastal low lifts out of the region another weak shortwave in the mid level flow moves through overnight. This along with a warm front and LLJ maximum brings another wave of rain showers into southern New England. This ahead of an approaching larger shortwave which taps into a good subtropical moisture plume (PWATs 4-5 SD above normal). Rain moves into western MA/CT toward midnight and into eastern MA after 2 AM. This warm frontal/isentropically forced precip tapers off during the day Friday as the better dynamics remain north of the area. This places southern New England in the warm sector of the parent low as winds switch to the SW bringing in some extremely mild air along with the ample moisture. 925 mb temps approach +13C and we could see high temperatures approaching 70 in some locations. A 50 kt LLJ overhead will place some decent winds just overhead, but model soundings are indicating enough of an inversion to keep the strongest gusts aloft. It will be breezy though, gusting 25 to 35 mph. Along with the rain showers model soundings indicate the potential for some elevated instability which may lead to a few rumbles of thunder. Any downpours could also tap the LLJ and bring some localized higher wind gusts. By Friday night the cold front moves through, bringing a much colder and drier airmass. Saturday and Sunday... 850 mb temps will drop sharply from +13C earlier on Friday to near - 10C Saturday morning. This will manifest as a ~20 F drop in high temperatures from Friday to Saturday; we're looking at highs in the 40s to start the weekend. CAA and a well mixed BL will lead to gusty winds during the first half of the day as well which will make it feel cooler. The LLJ overhead exits during the day allowing winds to calm as high pressure moves in and the pressure gradient relaxes. Skies are slow to clear but as sprawling high pressure builds in cloud cover will decrease through the day Saturday and Sunday should be mostly sunny. Temperatures also take a dip on Sunday as cold NE flow around the high bring decent cold air advection; highs will be in the upper 30s and low 40s. With the high overhead Sunday night and clear skies, we may have some good radiational cooling, so have trended the low temps toward MOS guidance; in the 20s. Monday and Tuesday... Dry but milder on Monday as the high moves to the east and flow becomes southerly. At this point confidence decreases a good deal; ensemble guidance would suggest our next shortwave and coastal low pressure system moves in sometime in the Monday/Tuesday time frame, but there is significant disagreement on how progressively this moves through. For now will go with a blend of guidance and suggest an increasing chance of precipitation Monday night into Tuesday. && .AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Forecaster Confidence Levels...
