.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure off the Mid Atlantic coast will result in a southwest
flow of unseasonably mild conditions tonight. A cold front
slides through Tuesday night into Wednesday morning bringing
rain late Tuesday. Drier weather in store on Wednesday with
above normal temperatures, but slightly cooler in comparison to
Tuesday. Uncertain on the weather expected on Thursday, but next
best shot of precipitation is on Friday. Drier and cooler
weather anticipated this weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/...

High pressure ridging in control today brought dry and warm weather
as SW flow continues around the sfc high to our southeast. This
warm, moist flow has led to exceptionally warm temperatures today,
breaking the record of 70 F in Providence (they have reached 72 F as
of 2PM). The only ones missing out on the extreme mild temps are
immediate south coast where a cool flow off the water is keeping
temperatures in the mid 50s.

As we go into the overnight hours things remain quiet and warm.
Given warm and moist SW flow together with increasing clouds after
midnight and decent mixing...temperatures won't dip below the mid
40s tonight; the urban center around Boston could hover around the
50 degree mark. High clouds filter in toward midnight ahead of the
incoming system, while low/mid clouds don't show up until mid
morning Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...

Tuesday and especially Tuesday evening/night brings our main chance
of rain for the first half of the week. At the synoptic scale we see
a shortwave trough over the Great Lakes early Tuesday which crosses
New England Tuesday night. At the surface the low center moves from
the eastern Great Lakes into Maine, placing us in the warm sector
during the day before the cold front moves through Tuesday night. A
decent plume of moisture precedes the front (PWATs >1" and dewpoints
in the upper 40s) and weak isentropic lift together with divergence
aloft and a good LLJ will bring scattered showers in the afternoon
followed by the cold front/one last push of showers Tuesday night
between 8pm and midnight.

Temperatures will remain well above normal Tuesday, but cooler than
today given the cloudcover and rain. As the front draws nearer we
will mix rather well in the low level WAA which brings gusty winds
from the LLJ down to the surface. Some model soundings indicate the
potential for a very short period of wind gusts up to or above
40kts, but given the very short nature of this higher gust potential
and model spread, will stick with a forecast of winds gusting 25 to
35 mph in the afternoon, locally up to 45 mph.

The cold front exits after midnight taking the rain and clouds with
it and ushering in a drier airmass. Winds switch from the SW to NW
bringing a period of colder temperatures back to the region. Lows
overnight dip into the upper 30s and low 40s (save for the high
elevations of the Berkshires which could be sub freezing).

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Highlights...

* Cold front sliding through Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning
  this is followed by drier weather in wake of the front on Wednesday
* Potentially dry on Thursday, but still a lot of spread amongst
  guidance
* Next shot of precipitation on Friday
* High pressure building in from the northwest through the weekend

Details...

Tuesday evening into Wednesday AM...

A shortwave trough will lift from southeastern Ontario Tuesday
evening into Maine by Wednesday morning. The surface low will lift
from southern Quebec into New Brunswick/Nova Scotia. The cold front
associated with the low will sweep through southern New England.
Flow aloft shifts from a southwesterly direction to the west, which
will advect colder air into the region.

Overall pretty good agreement amongst deterministic and ensemble
guidance. Some GEFS members are similar to the latest GEM/ECMWF,
which slides the front through a bit slower than the GFS. This
impacts how quickly precipitation exits. Despite these timing
differences ensemble plumes show QPF values clustering between a few
hundredths to 0.20 inches with the highest rainfall totals expected
across western portions of the CWA. Temperatures cool down into the
low 30s across the eastern slopes of the Berkshires and the mid 40s
along the coast.

Wednesday...

Drier weather expected on Wednesday in wake of the cold front. A mid
level ridge axis will build from the eastern Great Lakes into
northern New England. The surface high nudges into New England from
Quebec. Moderate to high confidence in the forecast at this point in
time as deterministic and ensemble guidance has come into pretty
good agreement.

Will have -2 to +4 degree Celsius air in place over the region at
850 hPa. Despite the ridge, expect some mid to high clouds to filter
in from the west with positive vorticity advection from a trough
lifting across the Great Lakes. There are some differences amongst
guidance on how quickly this trough lifts through, which impacts the
timing of cloud cover spreading in. High temperatures top out in the
low to mid 50s across most of the region.

Wednesday Night through Sunday...

Lots of uncertainty in this time window. Significant differences in
mass fields between deterministic guidance from run to run and model
to model. Ridging moves off to the northeast of the region on
Thursday and a trough digs into Ontario and the Upper Mississippi
River Valley.

The latest ECMWF/GEM show the surface high nudging in from Nova
Scotia/New Brunswick, which keeps the weather dry. The GFS develops
a broad low near Virginia/North Carolina and moves offshore. Appears
to be convective in nature, which 72+ hours out is hard to pin
point. Given the positive vorticity advection and the system nearby,
light showers cannot be ruled out. Confidence remains low in this
particular outcome. Temperatures will be similar on Thursday as
Wednesday. Stuck with the NBM guidance due to uncertainty at this
point in time.

Drier and cooler weather expected over the weekend as high pressure
builds in from Ontario and Quebec. Still some uncertainty at this
point in time given differences in mass fields. Have kept the latest
NBM, which keeps highs in the low 40s and low 50s on Saturday.
Cooler readings expected on Sunday with highs generally in the 40s.
