A powerful ocean storm well southeast of Nantucket early this
morning is bringing very strong wind to damaging winds and
accumulating snow to Cape Cod and the Islands. Sunshine and blustery
conditions follow after the snow ends this morning. Fair and cold
weather tonight, then much milder weather follows for Sunday and
Monday. Another weather system may bring scattered showers Tuesday.
Rain or snow is possible during Wednesday, with high pressure
bringing dry conditions on Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
10 AM update...
Snow has moved offshore and much drier air is moving into the
region. Dewpoints have fallen into the single numbers to near
zero in the interior. Clouds will quickly give way to sunshine
on the Cape/Islands with mostly sunny skies elsewhere. Sub
970 mb low well east of the benchmark and moving away but will
continue to result in gusty winds, strongest Cape/Islands. Have
converted the high wind warning to an advisory for the
Cape/Islands for gusts to 50 mph into early afternoon.
Elsewhere, gusts 25-35 mph diminishing mid/late afternoon. Highs
generally 40-45 degrees, except upper 30s higher terrain and
Cape/Islands.
Fire weather ...
There will be an elevated fire risk during this afternoon for
areas that did not receive appreciable snow. This includes much
of interior MA, north central/northeast CT, and also western
and northwest RI. With sunshine and dew points in single numbers
to near zero, minimum RH values in these areas will drop to near
20 percent. Strongest wind gusts will be in the morning,
peaking out at 20 to 30 mph across interior SNE but higher gusts
25-35 mph in the I-495 region and into RI. Winds gradually
diminish during the day.

Sunday through Monday...
A ridge axis will slide from the Ohio River Valley into the Mid
Atlantic/Southeastern US. The surface high will build into the
Carolinas and just offshore of the Carolinas on Sunday. This will
relax the pressure gradient across southern New England as the high
nudges in.
Expect dry and quiet weather on Sunday with temperature 10 to 15
degrees warmer than highs on Saturday. This is due to westerly warm
air advection aloft, which will bring in 0 to +5 degree Celsius 850
hPa air. Still may be a bit breezy at times as lapse rates will be
adiabatic within the boundary layer and shouldn't have much trouble
mixing 15 to 20 kt gusts down per the latest guidance. High
temperatures range from the mid 40s to the mid 50s.
High pressure builds well offshore on Monday as the ridge continues
building eastward. A negatively tilted shortwave trough will lift
from the Central Plains into the central Great Lakes. A broad
surface low will deepen across the Mid Mississippi River Valley and
lift into the western/central Great Lakes. The warm front associated
with this system will be located over southern Quebec and northern
New England. Expect dry weather, but there will be a bit more cloud
cover in comparison to Sunday. Will be milder with +4 to +8 degree
Celsius 850 hPa air advecting in. Highs range from the low 50s to
the mid 60s.
Tuesday into Wednesday AM...
The negatively tilted shortwave trough will lift into northern New
England by Tuesday afternoon. The trough will continue lifting
through by Wednesday morning. There are some slight timing
differences amongst deterministic and ensemble guidance, which
impact how quickly the system moves through. Have utilized the
latest NBM guidance as there still is some uncertainty on how
quickly the wave moves through, which brings precipitation chances
Tuesday into early Wednesday. Based on the temperature profile all
rain is expected.
Wednesday through Friday...
The latest GEFS and EPS guidance hint that the system that slides
through early on Wednesday may have the cold front stall nearby or
over the region. This coupled with another shortwave lifting in from
the Great Lakes could keep light precipitation around during the
day, but there are run to run and model to model to model
differences this far out. Have kept the NBM guidance, which brings a
better chance of precipitation Wednesday evening into Thursday
morning. Low confidence at this point in time.
Models in better agreement that a ridge axis will be in place over
the Great Lakes or Quebec. This will allow high pressure to nudge
into the region bringing drier conditions on Thursday. Mass fields
are all over the place especially with temperatures, so have kept
the NBM guidance due to uncertainty.
Another trough digs in from the the Upper Midwest on Wednesday and
could bring more precipitation. Still enough spread amongst guidance
in mass fields that it is hard to pin point how things will
progress. A broad low may develop nearby or over the region bringing
precipitation chances. Another shot of precipitation late in the
week as a trough digs in across Ontario and the Great Lakes. Lots of
spread amongst guidance, so confidence remains low.

radar trends. Once snow comes to an end should see any IFR/MVFR
conditions rapidly improve to VFR.
Main concerns today are strong northerly wind gusts. Expect
gusts up to 40 to 50 kts across Cape Cod and the Islands this
morning. Elsewhere gusts of 25 to 35 kts. Wind speeds and gusts
will gradually diminish as the high builds in and begins
relaxing the pressure gradient.
