.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moving over New England brings dry weather and
below normal temperatures tonight. Much milder weather returns
beginning Monday as the high pressure moves offshore. This
continues through the middle of the work week with a frontal
system bringing showers for Tuesday night. Mild temperatures and
dry weather continue late Wed and Thursday. There is then
potential for a storm to impact the region late next week, but
confidence in details remains low.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
High pressure overhead will bring subsidence and clear skies for
the first half of the night. After midnight the high will shift
offshore, starting a light but mild south flow for the late part
of the night.

The south flow signals the start of warm advection, which will
also bring higher moisture values to Southern New England. The
higher moisture will encourage cloud formation in the
overrunning zone, and the low level jet generating the
overrunning will move through NY and enter New England after
06Z. Expect clouds to move into the region at that time as well
as widely scattered light snow showers. The best chance of the
showers will be in Northwest MA near the strongest lift.

Clear skies and light wind will encourage radiational cooling
early tonight. With dew points in the teens, expect temperatures
inland to fall into the mid and upper teens while coastal areas
are in the lower 20s. As the warm advection and clouds move in
overnight, this cooling will cease. Temperatures will level out
later tonight and may even rise a few degrees by morning.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Warm front moves through Southern New England during the day.
Once it moves through, the overnight clouds should move off to
the northeast with partial clearing over the region. So while
clouds are favored early in the day...the trend favors more
sunshine for the midday and afternoon.

Warm advection aloft will limit the depth of mixing, but
temperatures at 950 mb are forecast at 4-7C, equiv to -3C to -6C
at 850 mb. So this favors sfc max temps in the upper 40s to mid
50s...possibly mid 40s in the colder locations such as the Cape
and Islands where the wind will be off the water.

South-Southwest winds in the low level jet will reach 40 to 50
kts during the day, so the forecast expects gusts around 25
kt...25 to 30 mph. A gusty day.

Monday night...

The mild flow continues through the night. But the core of the
low level jet will move off toward Nova Scotia, so winds should
diminish. A cold front approaches from the Great Lakes, moving
over Northern and Central New England by sunrise. Modest but
sufficient lift ahead of the front will bring a return of clouds
early in the night and a chance of showers to Southern New
England after midnight.

Dew points rise through the 30s and lower 40s overnight,
providing a floor for expected low temperatures of 35 to 45.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Highlights...

* Another system brings more rain showers late Tuesday into
  Wednesday morning

* A dry spell returns as high pressure builds in late Wednesday into
  Thursday with cooler but mild temperatures

* Potential continues for low pressure Friday/Saturday to bring
  rain and/or snow to the region, but confidence remains low

Details...

Tuesday and Tuesday night...

A mostly cloudy but dry and very warm day is in store for Tuesday.
This brief return to dry weather comes out ahead of another
incoming, stronger shortwave and surface low pressure that lifts
through New England overnight. As the warm front lifts north later
Tuesday warm southerly flow is amplified bringing in not only very
warm temperatures (in the upper 50s, approaching 60) but a plume of
decent moisture (PW values approaching 1"). Isentropic lift together
with forcing ahead of the approaching cold front will bring
widespread rain, overspreading the region after sunset. Most of the
rain falls during the overnight hours, exiting by 7am. Amounts
should be light; a few hundredths to a few tenths of an inch.

Wednesday and Thursday...

Showers taper off from west to east Wednesday morning as the cold
front ushers in a cooler and much drier airmass. In this CAA regime
we see much of the upper level moisture exiting with more lingering
in the mid/low levels where some clouds likely stick around. The
last place to see showers come to an end should be far western MA
where orographically favored locations may be able to squeeze out
some precip from the low/mid level moisture. Overall should be a
mostly dry day with breezy to gusty winds. Stuck between an exiting
low and incoming high, the CAA pattern will help to efficiently mix
to near 850 mb where guidance indicates potential for gusts anywhere
from 30 to 35 mph. The cold front kicks temperatures down several
degrees but we're still looking at afternoons in the upper 40s-50s
both Wednesday and Thursday!

By Thursday a ridge of high pressure moves in bringing clearing
skies and continued dry weather. Winds will be lighter as well.

Friday and Saturday...

What to say about the upcoming winter storm potential...5 to 6 days
out I'll stick with generalities and say that we continue to monitor
a period of unsettled weather late Friday into Saturday. Outcomes
range from a highly impactful strong snow storm to a benign rain/
snow event. At this point what we do know is that we're looking at
two pieces of atmospheric "energy" that will be swinging through in
the vicinity of the eastern seaboard...a southern stream low over
the southeast US and a northern stream shortwave over the Great
Lakes. How and when these two disturbances phase or fail to will
determine the outcome for southern New England. As flip flopping
deterministic guidance has alluded to, the southern wave could bring
an injection of moisture together with the shot of cold from the
northern piece to produce impactful snowfall over southern New
England. However, it is one of many scenarios that may play out, and
us snow lovers would do well to not get our hopes up quite yet, as
this winter has burned us with these scenarios many times. That
being said, EC ensemble members continue to advertise potential for
a strong coastal storm, so it is something to watch. Stay tuned!

An area of 40-50 kt winds will move above the waters at roughly
2000-3000 feet. Some of that wind will try to reach the surface,
and may generate surface gusts of 25 to 30 kt. The steady
south-southwest wind at the surface will build seas to 5-6 feet
in the afternoon. A new Small Craft Advisory has been issued
beginning Monday afternoon.

Monday night...South-southwest winds continue with gusts 25 to
30 kt. The steady wind will continue to build seas with heights
of 5 to 8 feet on the exposed waters. A cold front approaches
late at night, bringing a chance of rain showers to the waters.
