Mainly clear skies across much of SNE this evening with winds
diminishing. Lake effect clouds nearby from the Berkshires but
any show shower activity will remain to the west. Mid level
trough across the Lakes rotates through NY overnight. Cloud
cover will increase in western MA late tonight and can't rule
out a few flurries. No change to temp forecast with expected
lows upper teens to mid 20s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Saturday...
Mid level trough axis and surface trough pass through southern New
England during the day. Winds start out W then become NW behind the
trough, with some gusts 20-25 mph during the afternoon. Increase in
moisture in the 850-700 mb level, which will allow for cloudiness,
but chances for precip should be more limited in nature. With highs
in the upper 20s to upper 30s across much of the area, low level
lapse rates will be steep, but dew point depression will be quite
large, and would be a limiting factor in much precip making it to
the ground. Can't rule out flurries or very isolated light snow
showers, will likely see virga though. Exception will be across
extreme NW Franklin County, going with a slight chance pop for snow
showers there.
Saturday Night...
Skies become mostly clear as the trough moves offshore and high
pressure starts to build into the region from the west. NW winds
become light over the interior, which will allow for good
radiational cooling. Forecasting lows in the teens to low 20s across
much of the area. Exception is over the far northwestern interior,
where some lows of 8 to 12 above zero are forecast. Temps on the
outer Cape and Nantucket probably bottom out in the mid 20s, with
NW winds gusting to 20 mph.

Sunday through Sunday night...
Large high pressure moves east along the Gulf Coast during this
time. Our region will be on the northern periphery of this
feature, but close enough where subsidence will be strong enough
to maintain dry conditions. Temperatures should approach near
normal levels after a chilly start under abundant sunshine
Sunday. Winds should become light south Sunday night, but not
enough to prevent temperatures from falling to slightly below
normal levels.
Monday through Friday...
This is the portion of the forecast which is expected to become
more active. A persistent mid level low over southeast Canada
and the Maritimes finally kicks out to sea. This action
essentially breaks a fairly stable pattern, with complex
interactions ensuing much of next week. How the northern and
southern streams of the mid level flow interact exactly will
make a significant difference.
Have rather high confidence in temperatures returning to above
normal levels most of next week. Have rather low confidence on
the timing details of any precipitation events. Latest
guidance exhibited large spreads of 500 mb heights in both the
deterministic and ensemble runs. In general, kept a broad
period of rainfall chances from Monday night into Friday,
although it will not be ongoing this entire time. Still thinking
the most likely window for rainfall should be from late Tuesday
into Wednesday morning.
