.SYNOPSIS...
As a low pressure moves north into eastern Canada, expect dry
but cold and blustery conditions late tonight through this
weekend. It will not be as gusty as today, though. Lake effect
snow showers may move across the northern Berkshires at times
into this weekend. Large high pressure will build across our
region late Sunday into early Monday, with temperatures
moderating close to normal. Unsettled conditions should move in
from later Monday through mid week with milder temperatures.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
930 AM update...

Sct-bkn strato-cu moving across SNE and even a few flurries as
strong westerly flow carries lake moisture downstream into SNE.
Airmass rather dry with dewpoints in single numbers and lower
teens so not expecting much more than a few flurries. Exception
should be across far western Franklin and Hampshire Counties,
where light lake effect snow showers may produce a coating of
snowfall. Winds will remain gusty tonight with gusts 30-40 mph
at times with higher gusts possible over the islands and higher
terrain. Lows will range mostly through the 20s with some upper
teens over higher terrain in northern and western MA.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Low pressure lingers over the Canadian Maritimes, with our area
remaining in a W/WSW flow. Moisture around 5kft lingers in an
otherwise dry airmass. with daytime heating, expecting some
stratocumulus to develop. Thus mostly to partly sunny skies for
the day.

It will be noticeably colder, with highs in the upper 20s and
30s across the region. It will also be blustery, with W/WSW
winds gusting 25 to 35 mph.

Steep low level lapse rates over the ocean with W/WSW winds may
produce some additional clouds and possibly a few flurries over
Nantucket.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights...

* Expect dry conditions but cold temperatures lingering through
  this weekend as low pressure slowly exits eastern Canada

* Large high pressure builds slowly east Sunday night into
  early Monday as temperatures return to near normal levels

* Conditions will become unsettled starting late Monday through
  mid week as weather systems shift across the region in a
  developing west to southwest mid level steering flow

Details...

Friday night through Sunday...

A low pressure still expected to linger near the Saint Lawrence
River Valley Friday night, before merging its energy with
another low pressure moving past the Maritimes Saturday night.
Meanwhile, a high pressure should move east along the Gulf
Coast. This pattern will maintain a gusty west to southwest flow
across southern New England during this time, especially during
the mid morning and afternoon hours.

Temperatures during this time should average below normal with
more of a westerly wind direction. Mainly dry weather during
this time, although cannot completely dismiss the idea of a few
lake-effect snow showers/flurries making it east of the
Berkshires Friday night.

Monday through Thursday...

Noting a changing mid level steering flow across the lower 48
taking shape starting early next week. While broad ridging
crosses the northeast early Monday, a nearly zonal flow sets up
from the Appalachians to the central U.S., while a cutoff mid
level low digs off the southern CA coast. As the steering flow
evolves through mid week, noting steadily increasing mid level
heights across southern New England, meaning moderating
temperatures are expected.

Quite a bit of spread among the 27/12Z guidance. and have little
confidence in the details after Monday night. Complex
interactions between the northern and southern jet stream will
play a significant role in storm track and temperatures. Based
upon our winter season thus far, as well as the rising heights
depicted by just about all guidance, will continue to favor rain
as the dominant precipitation type mid week. Not expecting this
period to be a total washout, but have broad periods of rainfall
between Tuesday and Thursday.
