.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over southern New England moves offshore during
the afternoon, then remain there on Sunday. This will maintain
dry weather through the weekend, with cold temperatures today
moderating tonight and Sunday. Milder conditions continue
Monday. The next weather system bringing mainly rain Tuesday
and Tuesday night, which may start as a period of snow across
the interior. Blustery and colder conditions return later
Wednesday and especially Thursday with mainly dry and cold
weather persisting Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
High pressure overhead during the morning moves offshore in the
afternoon. This will give light NW winds during the morning,
becoming SW 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. The airmass will
remain dry through the column, supporting sunny/mostly sunny
skies.

Temperatures will start the morning cold, with morning values
in the single numbers and teens. The mixed layer is forecast to
around 950 mb, but even if one used 925 mb the result is the
same...sfc high temps in the 20s with low 30s possible along the
coast.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Tonight...

With high pressure offshore, a southwest flow develops across
Southern New England. The deep-layer airmass is forecast to
remain dry, but low levels show increasing moisture that reaches
the New England South Coast. This will mean a period of clouds
after midnight, but enough dry air to hold back any
precipitation.

Clouds will also move in from the west late at night. A
shortwave moving across Canada will push clouds into northern
and western parts of Srn New England after 1 AM. This too will
face enough dry air to hold back precipitation at night.

As for temperatures...fair skies and light wind will allow
temperatures to cool off early in the night. The southwest flow
and incoming clouds will stop the cooling and bring warming
temperatures for much of the night. The forecast min temps will
show mid teens to mid 20s early in the night, then rising
temperatures.

Finally, forecast winds at 1000-2000 feet show a 30-40 kt
southwest jet during the night. It is not clear how much of this
developing wind could be brought to the surface. But there is a
potential for 20-30 knot gusts. For now, forecast uncertainty
holds these gusts to the teens away from the coast.

Sunday...

Clouds from that Canadian shortwave will combine with the left
exit region of a southern stream jet to maintain clouds over the
region Sunday morning. These clouds then diminish as the two
features move off to the east. This continues to be a dry
forecast with a mix of clouds/sun in the afternoon. Mixing will
reach 925 mb, where temps of 0C to +1C will support max sfc
temps in the mid 40s, except around 40 in the highlands. Winds
in the layer support gusts to 20 kt along the coast.

Details...

Sunday night...

A trailing, mostly dry cold front will drop trough Sunday night
extending from the low over northeast Canada. Lacking moisture, most
locations will remain dry, only seeing a benign drop in temperatures
leading into Monday. Nevertheless, given the overall different
airmass, low temps will be quite a bit milder than Saturday night,
in the 20s and low 30s.

Monday and Monday night...

Aloft we see a ~3C drop in 850 mb temps behind the cold front as
high pressure builds back into southern New England. This will bring
high temps a few degrees cooler than Sunday, in the upper 30s and
low 40s with sunshine. It brings things a bit closer to average for
late February, if still a bit warm. Skies remain clear into the
evening before high clouds invade from the west overnight ahead of
the next wet weather system.

Tuesday and Tuesday night...

The one active period in the whole of the extended forecast will be
Tuesday into Tuesday night. At the synoptic scale we see a sprawling
shortwave digging into the Great Lakes region with an attendant sfc
low tracking into Quebec. WAA and isentropic lift will bring
widespread precipitation along and behind the warm front as it lifts
north. Given the relatively mild antecedent airmass the column looks
warm enough for it to fall as rain, outside of the higher elevation
interior of MA where a few inches of snow are possible initially
before changing over to rain. Latest guidance has started to
indicate the formation of a secondary low along the frontal
boundary, but given the far inland track of the parent low this
would more than likely strength downstream over the Gulf of Maine.
Still, something to watch as details come into focus in the coming
days. Mild air surges in on the moist SW flow leading to a shot at
50 degrees for some locations along the south coast Tuesday. This
will also help mix down a strong LLJ bringing gusty winds,
especially along the coast. The cold front drops through sometime
Tuesday night or Wednesday morning ushering in a drier and colder
airmass.

Wednesday through Friday...

Remarkably quiet weather under predominately high pressure for the
middle and latter part of the week. At the moment it appears as if
high pressure may extend from coast to coast! Wednesday will bring
gusty winds as the gradient is slow to slacken between the departing
low and incoming high. CAA helps mix down the lingering 23-35kt
850mb jet and model soundings indicate potential for 20-30 mph gusts
region-wide. Temperatures will be on their way down behind the cold
front, but there remains some question as to how quickly the coldest
air arrives. For now going with a model blend which puts highs
in the upper 30s before quickly plunging to teens overnight.

Thursday the core of the cold pool aloft moves overhead leading to
the coldest day of the week (sub freezing highs) before slightly
milder air moves in Friday to bring temps back into the mid 30s. The
only real chance of precip comes in the form of some ocean effect
snow showers over the outer Cape late Thursday into early Friday.
