.SYNOPSIS...
Fast moving low pressure from Texas will pass along the Southern New
England coast this morning, then move out to sea this afternoon.
Snow inland and rain along the coast will change to rain everywhere
by midday before tapering off in the afternoon. Northwest winds
bring colder air to the region for tonight, Friday, and
Saturday. Temperatures rapidly moderate by Sunday and Monday.
Next main shot of precipitation looks to be on Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

Low pressure moving through the Mid Atlantic states early this
morning will pass along the South Coast during the morning hours,
then move out to the sea during the afternoon/evening.

A 50-60 kt low level southwest jet moves with the low and brings a
good supply of moisture, as noted by PW values of 1.25 inches along
the South Coast. This suggests the heaviest rain taking place this
morning, then moving off as the low and the jet move off to the east.

Precip type will an issue this morning. Temperatures as the precip
moved in were borderline to freezing, ranging in the low to mid 30s.
Surface winds were from the south and southeast, a marine flow,
while low level ageostropic flow was light from the north with no
appreciable source of cold air to oppose the marine flow. Expect
rain to continue in southern sections this morning; meanwhile the
milder air will work north and change the snow to rain. The rain
will taper off during the mid to late afternoon as the low pressure
moves away.

The greatest accumulations will be in northern MA, near the NH
border, where 2-4 inches is possible. South of there, amounts should
range from a coating up to 2 inches. There may also be some ice
impact during the transition from snow to rain, with a short period
of sleet possible. With these numbers in mind, a Winter Weather
Advisory continues for Nrn CT, NW RI, and much of Mass to the west
and north of Boston. This headline will end later this morning and
early afternoon.

Temperatures will rise just a few degrees, with max values ranging
from 35 to 45.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...

Tonight and Friday...

Much colder air moves in during tonight and Friday. This can be seen
at 900 mb, where temperatures change from near freezing this evening
to -10C Friday morning and -15C Friday afternoon. Model moisture
fields are slow to move out tonight, but are dry over most of Srn
New England on Friday. Expect clearing skies during this period.

The forecast stays close to model temperature values tonight.
Nighttime temperatures upstream have been roughly 15 to 25, and so
this was used for the forecast for tonight. Temps aloft Friday
support surface max temps in the 20s except low 30s on the South
Coast.

The cold air will generate a 16-20C air-water temperature
difference. North- Northwest winds above 12 kt suggests a
period of ocean effect snow showers. The area most at risk would
be Outer Cape Cod, although a shift to a more northerly
direction could shift the snow showers across Cape Cod Bay into
the Mid Cape.

Friday night...

Also as winds diminish on Friday night, with a deep snowpack in
interior and northern New England and mostly clear skies, it will be
an effective radiational cooling night so have gone with colder
guidances for temperatures. Expect Saturday morning lows to be below
zero for parts of the interior and single digits elsewhere away from
the coast. Have kept the Boston metro a little higher than the
coastal plains, in the upper single digits since the cold air
advection is not terribly impressive enough to fully negate urban
heat island effect. Coastal locations should bottom out in the
teens.

Saturday and Sunday...

* Cold but mainly dry weekend with moderating temperatures Sunday *

By late Friday into early Saturday, a 500mb ridge is already
building in from the west. 850mb wind direction shifts to the west
and eventually southwest as warming aloft begins. But as surface
high pressure moves overhead, expect another day of sub-freezing
highs. It will feel considerably warmer than on Friday, however,
with calm or light winds and plenty of sunshine. Like the previous
day, areas with existing snowpack will be a few degrees colder due
to albedo effect. On the flip side, areas that could see high
temperatures approach or even exceed the freezing mark will be in
Eastern MA and RI, where there is likely to be an absence of
snowpack depending on how the Thursday system evolved. By Saturday
evening, an increasing low level jet will help mix down warmer air
aloft and as a result, temperatures will be slow to fall after
sunset, remaining in the upper teens to mid 20s overnight. These
readings will be almost 20 degrees higher than 24 hours prior!

By Saturday night, models show the ridge giving way to a broad
negatively tilted 500mb trough east of the Mississippi River. At the
surface, a low pressure is forecast to track over Hudson Bay, which
may bring some snow showers to interior New England, mainly for the
higher elevations. Given that the system is moisture deprived and
the main forcing is well to the north, this should amount to no more
than decorative snow for the aforementioned areas. Otherwise, Sunday
should be mostly dry for most areas with a mix of sun and clouds.

Monday into Wednesday...

* Unsettled weather returns on Tuesday into Wednesday but confidence
  in any specific solution is low at this point *

Monday looks to feature slightly above normal temperatures and dry
conditions with surface high pressure over Southern Quebec. This is
out ahead of a strong low pressure system that will emerge from the
Plains and track over the Great Lakes, spreading widespread
precipitation to our area by Tuesday afternoon. Given how
progressive the overall weather pattern has been, a reasonable first
guess for the predominant precipitation type will be rain. However,
there may be enough cold air during precipitation onset to start as
a wintry mix in the interior before changing over to rain. The ECMWF
 brings the low further inland over the Great Lakes and intensifies
it much more than the GFS. The ECMWF solution would put Southern New
England in the warm sector with non-diurnal temperature trends and
even a possible line of convection on Tuesday night. But given that
we are still 5 to 6 days away, all options remain on the table at
this point and have mainly used a model blend for this part of the
forecast.

moves eastward into the Gulf of Maine. Improvement to MVFR/IFR
levels mid to late afternoon.

While speeds are generally light (under 10 kt), E winds will
shift from the west and northwest this afternoon. SW winds
10-15 kt gusts to 25 kt over the waters south of ACK with
potential for LLWS.

Tonight... High confidence.

Colder drier air builds in during the night. This will bring
improvement to VFR and eventual clearing. NW winds increase
overnight with gusts to 20 kt.

Friday... High confidence.

VFR with northwest winds gusting 20-25 kt. Potential MVFR cigs
over Outer Cape Cod in ocean effect snow showers.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF. MVFR conditions
lower to IFR by the morning push. Brief period of snow early
morning changes to rain by 5-6 AM. IFR in rain and fog through
the day. Wind shifts from northwest mid to late afternoon. IFR
cigs linger through early evening.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. IFR cigs/vsbys through
the morning, with snow at the start of the morning push, then
changing to rain around 7-8 AM. A brief period of sleet is
possible during this transition.  IFR in rain and fog mid
morning to mid afternoon, improving to VFR around 7 PM.

Today...

Low pressure moving along the South Coast will bring 1-3 mile
vsbys in rain and fog to the waters this morning and early
afternoon. South winds this morning turn out of the west this
afternoon as the low moves past and heads out to sea. Winds are
expected to remain at 20 kt or less through the day. Seas remain
at 5-6 feet on the southern exposed waters through the day. A
Small Craft Advisory continues in this area.

Tonight and Friday...

Northwest winds increase tonight as high pressure approaches the
waters. Sustained winds increase to 15-20 kt, and gusts increase
to 25-30 kt. In addition, seas build to 5-7 feet on the exposed
waters of both coasts. Small Craft Advisory headlines have been
extended to these waters.

The northwest winds and very cold air moving over the coastal
waters will generate bands of ocean effect snow showers over or
near Outer Cape Cod later tonight and Friday. This will bring
reduced visibility in snow showers.

Finally, the cold air and strong Northwest wind will generate
light freezing spray over the waters east of Massachusetts late
tonight and Friday.

freezing spray, slight chance of snow.

Saturday: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching
