.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front will remain stalled near the South Coast. A
weak area of low pressure from the Appalachians will move along
the stalled front, bringing a period of rain across Southern New
England today. High pressure then follows tonight, bringing dry
conditions and clearing skies. The fair weather continues on
Wednesday. Fast-moving low pressure looks to impact the region
Wednesday evening through Thursday. This will bring rain and
snow which gradually transitions to a wintry mix and eventually
all rain. Expect this to impact the Thursday morning commute.
Mainly dry conditions return Friday through the weekend with
well below normal temperatures until we warm up Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Weak cold front was best located midway between the light north
wind at BDL and light south wind at FMH. The front is drawing
into line with the WSW-ENE upper flow, so expect the front to
stall either in place or near the South Coast. Southerly low
level flow was mostly aimed at Central/Eastern NY, but some of
this was translating east into Srn New England with the upper
flow and generating light rain/drizzle along and south of the
Mass Pike.

As the low pressure over the central Appalachians moves up the
front, expect the low level jet to shift east and thus also
shift the wet weather across our area. Expect increasing dynamic
lift to play a role...one weak jet has moved into the region
with its right entrance region moving into place this morning. A
second and more substantial jet approaches this afternoon with
Srn New England in the left exit region. Expect precip to spread
over the region this morning and linger through the afternoon
before moving offshore this evening as these features continue
to shift east. Best chance will be close to the surface front,
which will be along the South Coast, so the forecast will
feature its highest pops there with values diminishing toward
the north.

The next question is ptype. Temperatures at 1000 and 950 mb are
mostly above freezing, which indicates rain. Areas along the NH
border, especially NW Mass, show low level temps 0 to -1C at
12Z/7 AM but substantially milder by 18Z/1 PM. It is possible
ptypes in this area show an initial winter mix of
snow/sleet/freezing rain, but the warming trend aloft suggests
most of the period will feature rain.

The surface low passes south of Cape Cod between 18Z/1 PM and
00Z/7 PM. As this happens the surface winds should turn out of
the northwest, bringing drier air. This and the departure of the
low should bring the rain to an end.

Clouds, rain, and a light east surface wind should keep
temperatures from changing much. Temps at 950 mb would suggest
max sfc temps in the upper 30s NW to mid 40s south coast, but
that may even be a little optimistic. Will forecast max temps
in the mid 30s to mid 40s.

Finally, issuing a dense fog advisory for Northern Essex Co.
based on 1/4 mile vsby at LWM and 1/4 mile vsbys across the
border in NH.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Tonight...

Drier air continues to move into Southern New England following
the departing surface low. The drier air will encourage clearing
skies during the night. The pressure gradient tightens, and the
increasing NW winds will draw colder air into the region
promoting a period of mixing. Winds at 925 mb and 950 mb are
projected at 30 to 35 kt, some of which will mix to the surface
in gusts. Figure 20-25 kt over land with higher amounts over
water.

Based on low level temps, surface lows should reach 25-35,
possibly a little colder if winds diminish inland late at night.

Wednesday...

High pressure builds over the region, with subsidence
maintaining sunny skies and dry weather much of the day.
Surface winds from the WNW diminish and turn from the Southwest
during the afternoon.

Mixing should reach to near 925 mb, with temps at that level
supporting max sfc temps 35-40F. Mixing to 900 mb would support
mid to upper 40s. The forecast goes in between this, with max
temps in the mid 30s to mid 40s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Highlights...

* Rain and snow Wednesday evening transitioning to a wintry mix and
  eventually all rain/drizzle early Thursday
* Dry conditions return to southern New England for Friday and
  Saturday with below normal temperatures. There is a possibility of
  ocean effect snow showers across Cape Cod and Nantucket on Friday
* Could see some light precipitation on Sunday

Wednesday evening through Thursday...

Late Wednesday brings our next shot of rain and snow, in the similar
vein to what we've come to expect more often than not this winter:
snow to wintry mix to rain. At the synoptic scale we see high
pressure to our southeast continue to exit stage right as a surface
low slides northeast from the mid-Atlantic to our doorstep Thursday
morning ahead of a positively tilted mid level trough. A warm front
will lift north across southern New England around or after midnight
bringing an initial thump of snow (except for from the immediate
coast) before warm air spreads through the column bringing a
rain/snow mix then finally rain sometime Thursday morning. Higher
elevations of the interior will likely deal with some sleet or
freezing rain before switching over to rain...at the moment not
looking like a good high pressure signal to our north to keep sfc
cold air locked in, but hi-res guidance will help discern that over
the next 24 hours. There is good speed convergence ahead of a 60kt
LLJ, and have a decent band of 850-700mb frontogenetical forcing on
the leading edge of the warm front with good omega in a saturated
DGZ, so we should see snow. The question will be, after a mild
Wednesday and with sfc temps outside of the high elevations around
or just above freezing, will it be able to accumulate. For now
thinking is that the best chance of 2-3 inches of snow is in the
interior high terrain, with a coating to 2 inches along and south of
the MA pike. However, any accumulating snow will be short lived,
washed away by rain. Timing of changeover is still uncertain, but
will likely be within a several hour window around the Thursday
morning commute, so prepare for potentially slow going on the roads
Thursday morning...especially in the Worcester Hills and Berkshire
slopes. By mid to late morning the heaviest of the precip should be
pulling out as a mid level dry slot moves in. Saturated low levels,
though, will keep the threat for drizzle around during the day.
Highs on Thursday reach the upper 30s (north) to upper 40s (south).
By Thursday evening/night the cold front drops through ushering in a
much colder and drier airmass. Lows drop 10 to 15 degrees from
Wednesday night, in to the teens and 20s.

Friday and Saturday...

Friday high pressure moves in, low pressure moves out. We're in for
a slowly clearing (drier air) and much colder day under strong CAA
from the N/NW. 850 mb temps get down to -20C! Given the very cold
airmass overhead along with clear skies and calm winds, Saturday
morning will be very cold. Given good radiational cooling, hedged
toward a combination of MOS and the coldest of several models. We'll
see negative single digits in the high elevation interior with
positive single digits elsewhere, but teens on Cape Cod. GEFS mean
shows Boston staying above 0 but in the 0-5 F range, and the EPS
probability of temps <0F would agree that chances are good just
northeast of the BOS-PVD corridor. Model soundings show good mixing
on Friday in the CAA pattern, which will mix down some breezy winds,
gusting 15-25 mph. The only exception to the dry forecast is for
Cape Cod and Nantucket where the combination of northerly wind,
lingering low level moisture, and "warm" ocean temperatures will
lead to some ocean effect snow during the day. Saturday is dry and
quiet as the high pressure moves directly overhead; still quite cold
with highs in the 20s.

Sunday and Monday...

Warmer SW flow returns late Saturday and Sunday ahead of an
approaching shortwave bringing milder temps back to the region. 850
mb temps return to the -5C territory while sfc highs once again
climb above normal into the upper 30s and 40s. Increasing
uncertainty with the wave swinging through, but for now it looks to
be a mostly dry cold front on Sunday before high pressure builds
back in.

.AVIATION /09Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Today...

Expect ceilings and vsbys either at or lowering to IFR and LIFR
levels in rain and fog. A short period of snow/sleet/freezing
rain is possible along the NH border at the start of the
morning, but this should trend to rain during the morning. Light
wind out of the east/northeast this morning and early afternoon,
trending out of the northwest by evening. Rain and fog will end
with the wind shift.

Tonight...

Improving conditions with cloud bases reaching VFR and vsbys
quickly improving to P6SM. Clearing skies as winds increase from
the Northwest. Northwest winds will increase, with gusts to 25
kt possible in the coastal plain and 30-35 kt offshore to the
east.

Wednesday...

VFR. Northwest winds with morning gusts to 25 kt in the coastal
plain, stronger gusts just offshore. These winds will diminish
midday and afternoon.

BOS Terminal...Moderate confidence in the TAF.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence in the TAF.

Northwest winds will increase tonight with gusts to 35 kt on the
eastern/southeastern outer waters and to 30 kt closer to shore
in the east and on the southern waters. A Small Craft advisory
is in effect for most waters for most of the period. A Gale
Warning is in effect for the outer waters east and southeast of
Massachusetts from 1 AM to 9 AM. Winds will diminish and shift
out of the southwest Wednesday midday and afternoon. Seas build
to 5-8 feet with the wind tonight, then diminsh Wednesday
