.SYNOPSIS...
A weather system in the Mississippi Valley will lift through
Southern New England Thursday and Friday. This will bring a wintry
mix of precipitation types Thursday, which then changes to rain
through Friday. Rain continues through midday Friday. The
precipitation will change back to light snow Friday afternoon
into evening. Expect dry and cold conditions prevail Saturday as
high pressure builds across. A quick moving low may bring light
snow across late this weekend that may linger inland into
Monday morning.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...

High pressure extending from the Great Lakes to Northern New England
will continue to shift east tonight. This will bring dry weather to
all of Southern New England early tonight, as well as a limited
period of clearing to northern Massachusetts. Expect some cooling
during the early night with temperatures falling into the 20s and
lower 30s.

Low pressure over the lower Mississippi Valley will lift northeast,
spreading precipitation into Southern New England between 06z/1 AM
and 12Z/7 AM. As is a common event, D2D QPF fields are slower to
move the precip into our area than are the Gridded fields. Although
in this case it amounts to an hour or two. The forecast goes with
the slower timing. No doubts about the precip occuring, so POPs are
high.

Main forecast question is precip type. High pressure departing
through the Maritimes leaves a clear cold air signal over the
interior from Maine to Virgina. Low level ageostropic flow also
indicated cold air drainage during the early morning, with 20-30 kt
ageo flow from the north and northwest. Temperatures warm above
freezing by the start of precipitation in CT/RI/SE Mass, and shortly
after the start in areas north of the Mass Pike. This would mean
precip starting as rain or sleet south of the Mass Pike, and
starting as snow or a snow/sleet mix north of the Pike.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...

Thursday...

Warm advection at all levels bringing temperatures above freezing
during the day, earliest to the south and near the coast...latest in
northwest/northcentral MA. This means a period of snow/sleet and
possibly freezing rain in the interior during the morning commute
trending to rain during the latter morning and afternoon.

A Winter Weather Advisory continues for SE Srn New England from
early morning through mid morning in SE Mass, for early morning
through early afternoon for much of the region, and for early
morning through evening in northwest/northcentral MA. Roughly two to
three inches of snow/sleet possible in northern parts of the
advisory area, and a coating to 1/10th inch of ice possible in the
southern part of the advisory.

Thursday night...

The first area of precipitation moves north/east of the region by
evening.  A second area then moves in early at night. This second
area is forecast to bring precipitable water values of between 1 and
1.5 inches, which is at the high end of the range of observed values
from the past 70 years.

Expect rain through the night. The highest PW values are forecast
over the ocean, so the heaviest rain is expected there. Highest land
values will be along the South Coast and Islands, with lesser values
north and west. Some lingering sleet/freezing rain is possible early
in the night in western parts of Franklin and Hampshire Counties; if
ice lingers in this area, it should changeover early in the night.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Amplified but progressive mid level steering flow will bring
  multiple weather systems across the region from Thursday night
  into the weekend. Expect a mixture of precipitation types.

* For Thursday night through midday Friday...Expect about 1.5
  to 2.5 inches of rain regionwide, with the highest amounts
  mainly near and south of the Mass Pike. Temperatures should
  remain above freezing through midday Friday, then readings
  will start to fall as colder air works in. Will see a change
  back to snow Friday afternoon from NW-SE before ending Friday
  evening. This change will likely impact the Friday afternoon
  commute especially Route 2, central and western areas of the
  Mass Pike and the northern areas of Route 495 and 95. May see
  up to an inch or two of snow across the higher terrain.

* After a dry and cold Saturday, there is potential for a coastal
  storm on Sunday. Confidence remains low. Quiet weather and
  seasonable temperatures to start the work week.

Details...

Thursday night into Friday night...

* Winter Weather Advisory lingers across N slopes of the
  Berkshires through around 10 PM Thu night

* Precipitation briefly tapers off early Friday night, then
  next area of rain moves in by around midnight. Area of heavy
  rainfall moves in across NE CT, RI to the greater Boston areas
  and I-95 corridor southward to Cape Cod and the islands.
  Should see mainly rain through the night, as temperatures rise
  to the 33 to 36 degree range across the Route 2 corridor of N
  Mass.

* As the low moves NE and heavier rain shifts offshore around
  midday Friday, colder air will wrap in. Will see precipitation
  change over to snow across N central/W Mass, then will shift
  E through the afternoon and evening before ending. An inch or
  2 inches of snow across the higher terrain is possible.

While the low level jet of around 70 kt shifts NE off the S
coast Friday morning, models continue to set up the area of
heaviest rainfall across areas S of the Mass Pike. At this
point, looks like rainfall amounts will range from 1.5 to 2.5
inches, highest from NE CT and RI to the S and E of the
Boston/Providence corridor to Cape Cod and the islands. Noting
the deep PWAT plume, running 3 to as high as 5 SD above normal
for early February, moving across the region.

As the low shifts to the Maritimes Friday afternoon, temps will
start to fall so should see the rain change back over to light
snow as the heaviest precip shifts offshore. SW winds will
become gusty along the coast, through midday, veering to W
during the afternoon. Previous shifts also noted the low chance
for thunder during Friday. However, the convective parameters
are lower on the 00Z model run, with the better shot offshore.

Expect temps Thu night will range from the lower-mid 30s across
N Mass to around 40 along the S coast. On Friday, temps will
rise a bit, but could reach 50 on Nantucket and the mid 40s
along the S coast, but will linger in the lower-mid 30s across
N central and NW Mass.

While the best chance for strong wind gusts has pushed off the
coast, there is still a good chance for gale force wind gusts
across the open coastal waters Fri afternoon and especially
Friday night as the colder air works in.

Saturday and Sunday...

* Dry conditions and milder temps Saturday, then a possible
  coastal storm on Sunday. Confidence remains low.

High pressure moves across New England and the eastern seaboard
during Saturday, so expect dry conditions but cold
temperatures. Mid level heights are slowly rising, but remain in
the 528 to 534 dm range, so will see highs in the 20s well
inland to the lower to mid 30s across the coastal plain, running
from 5 to 10 degrees below seasonal normals.

As the overall steering flow become nearly zonal Saturday night
into Sunday, yet another low moves quickly E in this fast flow.
Could see light snow move in during Sunday, especially along the
coast. Quite a bit of model solution spread, so low confidence
with this feature.

Monday and Tuesday...

May see another frontal system approach during Monday, but quite
a bit of uncertainty as to the track and timing of this system.
At this point, only carried slight chance POPs for light rain
and/or snow.

Another low in the fast flow may try to lift NE from the mid
Atlc states Mon night into Tue which should pass offshore, then
a weak clipper type system may push SE out of southern Ontario
that could bring some light rain during Tuesday

.AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Tonight...Moderate-High confidence

Clouds fill in again around midnight. Lowering ceilings,
reaching 1500-2000 feet between 2-5 AM. Mixed precipitation
starts roughly 4-6 AM, starting as snow/sleet north and
rain/sleet south. Some freezing rain also possible.

Thursday...Moderate-High confidence.

Precipitation continues during the day. Above-freezing air moves
inland from the coast, changing any sleet and freezing rain to
rain/drizzle. Ceilings expected to become 500-1000 feet, with
vsbys in precipitation 2-4 miles, except 1-2 miles in the
higher elevations and especially in areas of snow.

Thursday night...Continued 500-1000 foot ceilings and 2-4 mile
vsbys in rain. Areas of heavy rain with highest chance across RI
and SE Mass...lowest vsbys likely in this area as well as at
Worcester which is 1000 ft MSL.

Short Term /through Thursday Night/...

High pressures builds over the Maritimes tonight, bringing a
trend to northeast or east winds over the waters. A weather
system moving up the Appalachians to New England will bring rain
to the waters, and possibly some sleet near the coast early
Thursday.

The rain will increase in intensity Thursday, then decrease
later in the day, then increase again Thursday night and Friday.
Periods of heavy rain are possible over the southern waters.
Expect vsbys 3 to 4 nm, lowering to 1 to 2 miles in heavier
showers.

Winds remain below 25 kt through the period. But the persistant
easterly wind will build seas to 5 feet or more over the outer
waters as well as the exposed RI waters. A Small Craft Advisory
will be in effect from later tonight through Friday morning.
