.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure ridge will build E across region today, then will
shift to the Maritimes tonight. Winds will shift to southwest,
bringing milder temperatures. Low pressure will move northeast
from the south central states, along with a cold front
approaching late this week with mild temperatures and areas of
rain. Snow showers are possible as precipitation is ending late
on Saturday into Sunday. Colder drier air for Sunday through
Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

110 AM Update...

The area of low clouds seen on latest observations as well as
GOES-East Night Fog and Nighttime Microphysics RGB satellite
imagery is slowly shifting NE and tending to thin across the E
slopes of the Berkshires and across E Mass. These clouds
continue to hold temps in the lower-mid 30s with light W-SW
winds in place, except for some gusts up to around 20 kt along
the S coast and across the higher terrain.

Will continue to monitor the cloud cover to see if some
radiational cooling may take place across some of the region
after around 08Z or so. For now, have used short range high res
model data, which continues the radiational cooling trend
mainly across the interior and higher terrain.

Noting temps remain a bit milder across the coastal plain and
into the lower and mid CT valley a bit milder due to winds
gradually backing to W-SW over the last couple of hours, which
has been seen on the high res data as well.

The trends noted above have been incorporated into this update
through the remainder of the night to 12Z.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

Dry weather through Thursday with above normal temperatures for
this time of year.

Precipitation chances increasing into early Friday as a system
approaches from the southwest.

Details...

The ridge axis slides through New England on Thursday and just
to the east Thursday night. This will bring partly to mostly
sunny skies across the region. Guidance in agreement for
southwesterly warm air advection, which will result in above
normal temperatures. Expect it to be less breezy Thursday
compared to today due to the relaxing of the pressure gradient.
Highs range from the mid to upper 30s across the Berkshires, to
the mid 40s along the coast.

A positively tilted longwave trough will dig into the Southern
Plains. Several shortwaves will ripple downstream. This will
bring broad ascent across the eastern US with flow aloft
becoming more southerly and surging warmer air in. The latest
guidance has come in much slower with the GFS/ECMWF in good
agreement, whereas the ARW/NMM/NAM are much faster. The GEM is
the slowest in bringing precipitation in. Think that the slower
GFS/ECMWF solutions are correct especially because it will take
a bit to moisten things due to the dry air in place ahead of
precip moving in.

The forecast has been nudged toward the drier solution, but if
this trend continues precipitation chances will need to be
knocked back further. In addition, bring a non-diurnal
temperature trend due to the strong southerly warm air
advection. Expect precipitation mainly as rain, but a few spots
across the higher elevations could briefly see a wintry mix
before becoming all rain. Lows range from the low 30s across the
higher elevations, to the low 40s along the south coast.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Big Picture...

The weekend starts with a West Atlantic ridge just off the East
Coast and a deep upper trough over the Plains. This channels a
southwest flow of mild and moist air up the Appalachians and into
New England. A shortwave diving down from the Canadian Prairies
motivates the trough to move east, pushing the ridge aside as it
crosses New England on Sunday. The pattern then turns more zonal for
early next week, but with shortwaves moving through the flow.
Agreement on details becomes blurred at that point with different
timing of the shortwaves. But there are indications of a strong
shortwave moving through Tuesday-Wednesday.

Daily Concerns...

Friday...

Cross sections show a deep layer of moisture and lift extending to
200 mb. Precipitable water values continue to be forecast in the 1
inch to 1.25 inch range, which is high in the historical range for
early January. Temperature profiles will be warming overnight. GEFS
ensembles show only a 20-30 percent chance of freezing surface temps
by 7 AM in Northwest MA. Expect rain in all areas through the day.
Temperatures at 1000 mb are forecast at 3 to 7C, which suggests max
temps in the 40s.

The initial surge of overrunning seems to fade by Friday night, but
not completely.  Expect the rain to become more off/on at that time.

Saturday...

Low pressure and its associated cold front approach from the Great
Lakes Saturday. This will mean another period of rain/showers
associated with the low and cold front, especially when the cold
front moves through during early Saturday night. A 30-40 kt low
level southwest jet moves up across the South Coast ahead of the
front. A 30-40 kt northwest jet then moves in behind the cold front
late Saturday night. Thus, rainy weather for the day and part of the
night along with gusty winds.

Colder air moving in behind the front may be enough to change
lingering rain showers over to snow showers Saturday night, but the
trend will be for diminishing precipitation.

Sunday...

The GFS move the surface low east of New England Saturday night, but
the ECMWF maintains the low southeast of New England Sunday and
moves it off to the east during the day. The first solution would
mean a dry forecast, while the second would indicate another day of
rain/snow. At this time we favor the dry GFS forecast. Northwest
winds 30-40 kt in the mixed layer should mix to the surface in gusts
during the day, then diminish with sunset. Temps in the mixed layer
support max sfc temps in the upper 30s and low 40s, although the
daytime wind should add a chill to the air.

Monday to Wednesday...

Timing of shortwaves can vary model-to-model and run-to-run. As
such, there is limited confidence in this part of the forecast. The
clearest signal for a shortwave comes late Tuesday into Wednesday.
This forecast will focus on chance pops for that time period.

.AVIATION /07Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

Through 12Z...Mainly VFR. CIGS mainly in the 3500-4500 foot
range across the interior where layer of low clouds lingers. May
see brief CIGS to 3Kft generally across the higher terrain and
INVOF KORH. W-SW winds around 5-10 kt which may gust up to
around 20-25 kt along the S coast terminals. Low clouds may
start to dissipate across the CT valley and E Mass after 08Z or
so. Generally good visibility.

Today...VFR. Some high clouds across central and N Mass
terminals through mid afternoon. SW winds gusting up to 15-20
kt. Good visibility.

Tonight...VFR. Clouds increase from SW-NE, then lower after
midnight to around 4-6Kft. Mainly good visibility, but may lower
to MVFR after 09Z across the lower CT Valley in -RA. SW winds
10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt early, then gradually diminish.

Friday...CIGS lower to MVFR-IFR with areas of LIFR Fri morning
into the afternoon. CIGS may improve to VFR across E Mass
terminals as drier air works in late in the day. MVFR VSBYS in
-RA. SW winds 5 kt up to around 10 kt mainly along the coast.
