.SYNOPSIS...
A weather system in the Mississippi Valley will lift through
Southern New England today through Friday. This will bring a
wintry mix of precipitation across the interior today, then
will change to rain by late this afternoon though some icing may
linger across the higher terrain. The precipitation will change
back to light snow or mixed precipitation across the interior
Friday afternoon into evening. Expect dry and cold conditions to
prevail Saturday as high pressure builds across. Quick moving
weather systems may bring periods of light rain and/or snow at
times from Sunday through Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1 PM update...
Just some patchy drizzle across SNE. Temps still hovering
around freezing in the CT valley with subfreezing temps higher
terrain. The advisory will continue for the higher elevations
in northern MA through the afternoon for patchy freezing
drizzle and will probably need to be extended through tonight as
hi-res guidance indicates the low level cold air will not be
completely scoured out. Steady rainfall lifting north from mid
Atlc region and this rain will overspread the region tonight.

Previous discussion...

Mainly light precip through the afternoon in the form of drizzle
and freezing drizzle as drying has occurred in the ice crystal
growth region. Coastal front along the I-95 corridor with temps
above freezing to the east where no threat of icing so
advisories were cancelled here. Further west across the CT
valley and interior MA, temps still near and below freezing.
With northerly wind persisting it will be difficult to
completely scour out the low level cold air, especially higher
terrain. Temps remaining 32-35F this afternoon interior and
likely below freezing interior high terrain. Additional QPF
will be light so not expecting much more ice accretion today and
limited to higher terrain.

Surface warm front south of New Eng by may lift across the
Islands later today where temps may rise to upper 40s to near
50 with SW winds, especially Nantucket. Highs lower 40s along
the south coast.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Strong signals for above normal moisture content continue.
06/00Z GEFS still had a +4 to +5 standard deviation anomaly.
This signals the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall
tonight into Friday morning as a low pressure moves through.
Where this low pressure tracks will be important, as that will
change the orientation of a low level jet relative to our
region. Much of the 06/00Z guidance trended slightly farther
west with this track, placing more of southern New England at
risk for a period of strong wind gusts Friday. Will need to
consider Wind Advisories with later forecasts. For now, am most
concerned for these strong gusts across the Cape and islands.

Expect rain through the night. The highest precipitable water
values remain forecast over the ocean, so the heaviest rain is
expected there. Highest land values will be along the South
Coast and Islands, with lesser values north and west. Some
lingering sleet/freezing rain is possible early in the night in
western parts of Franklin and Hampshire Counties; if ice lingers
in this area, it should changeover early in the night.

Above normal temperatures continue through this portion of the
forecast.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* As low pressure exits, leftover light rain across the coastal
  plain and light snow inland tapers off Friday evening. Skies
  become mostly clear.

* High pressure brings dry and cold conditions Saturday into
  Saturday night

* A couple more systems will move across the region Sunday
  through Tuesday, bringing a mix of rain and/or snow at times

Details...

Friday night...

As the strong low pressure moves across southern Maine Fri
evening, will see leftover light rain across central and NE
Mass, while snow lingers further west especially across the
northern Worcester hills and E slopes of the Berkshires. Not
expecting this to last long, however, as the trailing cold
front sweeps offshore.

W winds will be strong behind the departing low, especially
across the coastal waters and across Cape Cod and the islands.
Noting strong winds aloft, up to 60 to 70 kt at H85, highest
across the coastal waters at around 00Z Sat. Also noting winds
up to around 40 kt at H925, which should mix down. Should see
gusts up to 30-40 kt along the immediate S coast and up to
around KGHG or so, but the highest gusts will occur across outer
Cape Cod and Nantucket as well as the coastal waters through
around 03Z or so. The winds will then slowly diminish through
the remainder of the night. May also see gusts up to 25-30 kt
across the higher terrain as well.

As winds shift to W-NW, temps will drop quickly. H85 temps drop
to -10C to -15C, as seen on the 00Z GFS, which will linger
through the night. Should see temps bottom out in the 10-15
degree range across the higher terrain, ranging to the lower to
mid 20s along the coast. However, with the gusty winds, wind
chill values will fall to around zero across the northern
Worcester hills and E slopes of the Berkshires and in the upper
single digits to mid teens elsewhere.

Saturday and Sunday...

Will see some of the coldest air of the season move across the
region Saturday and Saturday night. Several members of the 00Z
models signaling the cold air aloft will continue to push across
the region during this timeframe. The H85 cold core of air,
with H85 temp down to -20C to -25C, will linger across northern
New England. However, the cold core will bring the H85 readings
down to around - 15C across this region into Saturday night. The
wind gusts do diminish to around 10-20 mph, highest across the
inland high terrain, with some gusts up to 25 mph across the
outer Cape and islands.

With the cold pool of air across the region, temps will only
recover to the 20s well inland to 30-35 across the coastal
plain. Wind chill values will be down to the single digits and
teens inland, ranging to the lower 20s along the coast.

While temps rebound to near normal levels on Sunday as the high
exits, another fast moving weak low pressure area may pass
south of the region. There is a low risk of light snow that may
move across, but only carried slight chance POPs with this
feature as it is moisture starved.

Sunday night through Wednesday...

Winds will shift to S Sunday night into Monday as another low
begins to shift out of the Great Lakes. Another shot of precip
shifts N-NE as the low approaches, but it should remain light.
At this point, should see light snow across most areas Sunday
night. With QPF values around 0.1 inches, though, not expecting
much snow accumulations. Also, noting some timing issues as this
system approaches, as 00Z models signaling solution spread.
However, have continued carrying chance POPs for light snow
across most areas into Monday morning, with light rain along the
S coast with the onshore winds off the milder waters. Should
see temps rise to allow a change to rain from S-N during Monday.

Looks like a brief break in the inclement weather Monday night,
except for some patchy light rain lingering along the coast.
However, models are are showing another weak low moving from the
Delmarva peninsula early Tuesday, so could see another chance
for mainly rain, except a mix of rain/snow across N central and
NW Mass during Tuesday.

Some questions lie in yet another system that may approach some
time on Wednesday. So, the overall active weather pattern
remains in place for now.

Expect temps to run around 5 degrees above seasonal normals for
Monday through Wednesday, with highs mainly in the upper 30s
well inland to the 40s along the shore.

pockets of freezing rain in the Berkshires may change to a
period of snow across western MA this afternoon before ending.
The main issue for Friday afternoon will be very strong west wind

40-50 kt will develop after 20z, especially south of the Pike.
Gusts may exceed 50 kt late Fri over Cape/Islands.

High pressure over the Maritimes generates east to northeast
winds across the waters. A stalled front along the south coast
of New England will provide a focus for widespread precipitation
today. There should be a brief lull in the rainfall this
afternoon, before it picks up again tonight into Friday. Periods
of heavy rain are possible over the southern waters. Expect
vsbys 3 to 4 NMI, lowering to 1 to 2 NMI in heavier showers.

Winds may gust to 25 kt today and tonight. The persistent
easterly wind will build seas to 5 feet or more over the outer
waters as well as the exposed RI waters. Small Craft Advisories
remain in effect for today.

Gale Watches posted for most of the southern New England coastal
waters Friday. Wind gust potential will be heavily dependent
upon the track of low pressure across southern New England.
Could see some SW gusts up to 45 kt.
