.SYNOPSIS...
A weak frontal system brings a period of light precipitation
this evening into tonight. A light wintry mix is possible
across northern Massachusetts though any accumulations are on
the light side. Mild and dry weather briefly returns for
Wednesday. Scattered rain/snow showers possible Wednesday night
into early Thursday with approaching low pressure, followed by
windy and much colder weather later Thursday into Friday. A
stronger low approaching from the west will likely bring some
accumulating snow changing to rain or a wintry mix late Saturday
into early Sunday. Behind the storm, drier and colder weather
returns early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1255 AM Update:

Lots of clouds with coverage of mist/fog having increased in
coverage characterize current conditions at this hour. These
trends expected to continue through much of the overnight.
Seems likely that areas of fog will last into the Wednesday
morning commute with inversion progged to hold steady until
winds increase and the inversion weakens. Pending trends, may
side towards issuing an SPS for fog for commuters with the
morning package. Other than expanding patchy fog coverage, no
other changes made attm.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Wednesday is the nicest weather day of the week under weak high
pressure. A cold front in the early morning hours ushers in a drier
airmass and by sunrise clouds will have cleared out significantly.
Dry weather returns with above average temperatures approaching 50
degrees and light winds.

Wednesday night a quick hitting and progressive system will bring
rain and high elevation snow to the region before ushering in a
drier but cold and windy end of the week. A shallow 500 mb trough
swings through the Great Lakes Wednesday night with a >1000 mb sfc
low out ahead of it which slides across central New England early
Thursday. The warm front lifts north between 7pm and midnight with
southerly flow and isentropic ascent providing lift for widespread
light rain showers. The thinking is still that this will bring rain
showers to most locations, with non accumulating snow possible
briefly in the interior before warm southerly flow changes it to
rain. A coating of snow is possible in the northern Worcester Hills
to around an inch in the northern slopes of the Berkshires where
ensemble probabilities of 1" or more are greatest.

Highlights...

  change to rain or a wintry mix

Thursday...

Potent shortwave and attending low pres will be moving east from the
Gulf of Maine. ECWMF is a bit slower than GFS which will determine
timing of rain or higher elevation snow showers exiting the region.
Slower ECMWF means precip lingers into the morning while GFS mostly
dry. Exact timing of when precip exits is uncertain but high
confidence in improving conditions through the day with partial
sunshine developing. Some upslope snow showers/flurries may spill
into the east slopes of the Berkshires.

The strong wind that develops as the storm deepens to the east will
be the main story for Thu. Very strong pressure gradient develops
and soundings show a deep and well mixed boundary layer. Near dry
adiabatic low level lapse rates will promote excellent mixing in
cold advection pattern. NW gusts to 40-50 mph appears likely and
wind advisories will likely be needed. Highs upper 30s to mid 40s
will occur by noon with falling temps in the afternoon as low level
cold advection increases.

Thursday night through Friday night...

Mainly clear skies as column is extremely dry with PWATs less than
0.10". But blustery and cold conditions continue into Fri as strong
pressure gradient persists with 850 mb temps down to -15C Fri.
Wind chills will bottom out between 5 below zero and 5 above late
Thu night/Fri morning. High temps Fri range from upper teens higher
terrain to mid 20s coastal plain with wind chills remaining in the
single numbers and teens. Strong high pres builds into the region
Fri night with diminishing winds which will allow for a very cold
night. Lows in the single numbers away from the coast and near zero
NW MA.

Saturday into Sunday...

Model guidance in decent agreement on a Pacific shortwave racing
east from the Gt Lakes and into New Eng by early Sun. Primary low
remains the dominant feature as it tracks east from the northern Gt
Lakes Sat night as max height falls are focused well to the north. A
secondary low is forecast to develop but not until Sunday in the
Gulf of Maine. If this occurs it will be difficult to lock in the
cold air for the duration of the event given primary low well to the
north.

Strong high pres to the north and deep cold air will be in place as
the moisture begins to overspread region Sat afternoon. This will
ensure a period of snow for all SNE into Sat evening, although the
high pres will likely delay the onset until Sat afternoon. Strong SW
low level jet develops which will erode the low level cold air with
an expected change to rain in the coastal plain Sat night and
possibly a wintry mix well into the interior. The exact details
remain uncertain and will depend on how strong primary low gets and
where secondary low develops. A shift in the forecast track may
still occur, however, given the progressive nature of this system
with lack of downstream blocking and a mid level low track well to
the north, the odds of a significant snow storm are diminishing. EPS
highest probs of greater than 3 inches are focused across the
interior with very low probs for 6+ inches which seems reasonable
for this set up. It is still early in the process so stay tuned.

Low pres exits from the Gulf of Maine Sun with improving conditions
although becoming blustery and colder behind the storm.

Monday and Tuesday...

Models are signaling dry but blustery and much colder conditions
with ensemble mean 850 mb temps dropping to -15C. Temps averaging
well below normal with the coldest day expected on Tue.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06Z TAF Update:

Rest of the Overnight: Moderate to high confidence.

MVFR/IFR ceilings, with 2-6 SM mist as low-level moisture
remains trapped under a stable layer aloft. Improvement not
anticipated until the early-AM/morning push as inversion weakens
and west winds start to increase.

Today: High confidence.

Improvement in flight categories 11-13z from W-E, with VFR
anticipated by mid-morning. W winds 5-10 kts with gusts of
15-20 knots.

Wednesday Night: Moderate confidence.

VFR through around 04z, then approaching warm front spreads
precipitation eastward. As precip occurs between 06-09z
areawide, ceilings to then crash to MVFR levels, possible IFR
in the Worcester hills and the Berkshires. P-type mostly RA for
areas south of the Mass Pike, with more of a rain/snow mix from
BAF-ORH-BED-BOS, though runways should stay wet. Best chance of
minor accumulations along/N of Route 2.

Winds become S/SE 4-8 kt, then shift to SW/W toward daybreak and
increasing to around 10 kt. Areas of low-level wind shear
possible 06-12z, with 925 mb winds increasing to ~40 kt.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF. Deterioration to MVFR,
psbl brief IFR ceilings with mist overnight, eroding and
improvement by 10-12z.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Thursday Night through Sunday/...

Thursday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Strong winds
with gusts up to 45 kt.

Thursday Night: VFR. Strong winds with gusts up to 40 kt.

Friday: VFR. Windy with gusts up to 35 kt.

Friday Night: VFR. Breezy.

Saturday: Mainly VFR, with areas IFR possible. Breezy. Chance
SN.

Saturday Night: Mainly IFR, with local MVFR possible. Windy
with areas of gusts up to 30 kt. SN, RA likely.

Sunday: Mainly VFR, with local IFR possible. Windy with gusts
up to 35 kt. Slight chance SN.

Tonight: E winds become southerly and increasing to 10-15 kt, gusts
to 20 kt. Seas continue at 2-4 ft outer offshore waters, around 1-2
ft nearshore.

...AREAS OF FOG TO REDUCE VISIBILITY THROUGH THE WEDNESDAY MORNING
COMMUTE...

Areas of fog will continue to result in reduced visibility for
travelers this morning. Visibility in fog should be between one
and four miles, though may be as low as one-half mile at times.
Fog is expected to dissipate by mid-morning.

Motorists should expect to encounter sudden changes in visibility
in foggy areas that may make for difficult travel at times. Use
low-beam headlights and drive at slower speeds if fog is
encountered.
