.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will sweep across Southern New England late this
afternoon and evening. This will bring clouds and widely
scattered rain showers. It will also draw mild air north across
the region. Behind the front, gusty northwest winds will bring
much colder air tonight and Tuesday. Quite chilly Tuesday night
into Wednesday morning across southern New England. Unsettled
late in the week and early into the weekend with wet and breezy
conditions anticipated.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
A broad upper trough digs over the northeast USA. Within the
flow, a shortwave drives northeast through the St Lawrence
Valley, with surface low pressure following a similar track.
A low level jet, southwest 40 to 45 kt, follows this same flow.
This pattern will swing a cold front from the Midwest through
Southern New England, with timing during the late afternoon and
early night. PW values in the airmass ahead of the cold front
will be 0.60 to 0.70 inches. This is above average for late
December, but only modestly so.
The moisture is enough for clouds today, and the low level jet
may generate daytime gusts up to 25 kt/30 mph. But the
available moisture, as noted, is modest. Will forecast widely
scattered showers, but with low rainfall amounts.
Mixing will be rather shallow, between 925-mb and 950-mb.
Temperatures at those levels support max sfc temps in the 40s
inland, possibly around 50 in RI/SE Mass.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Tonight...
After the cold frontal passage, winds will turn out of the west.
This will draw colder drier air into the region. This means
clearing skies and chilly temperatures, 20s inland and low 30s
along the coast.
Tuesday...
At the surface, high pressure builds east from the Great Lakes.
Aloft, the upper trough sweeps east as well. The trough axis and
cold pool will move overhead around midday.
Instability generated by the cold pool will create some diurnal
clouds, but overall the increasing subsidence will dry these
clouds and provide a sunny day.
The cold advection will allow mixing to 850 mb. Winds in the
mixed layer are forecast to reach 25-35 kt/30-40 mph. Some of
this will mix to the surface in gusts. Temperatures at 850 mb
will be minus 12C to minus 15C, supporting high temperatures in
the 30s. The resulting wind chills will be in the upper teens
and 20s.

Tuesday night and Wednesday...
High pressure builds over the East Coast and New England Tuesday
night and Wednesday before shifting offshore Wednesday night.
Dry and quiet weather for this period with temperatures near to
below normal.
Warmer air will begin to move in aloft Tuesday night into early
Wednesday as the mid level ridge moves over or just to the west of
southern New England. Despite this, the combination of clear skies
and light winds will result in strong radiational cooling. Lowered
temperatures to the 20th percentile of guidance with 0 to -5 degree
Celsius in place overhead. Should see some single digit readings
across some of the valleys of the interior. Generally readings will
be in the teens with some low to mid 20s along the coastal plain.
Held off from going colder as some of the climatological guidance
may be a bit too cold.
Flow aloft turns SW/SSW on Wednesday as the ridge moves to the east
of the region. This advects in 0 degree Celsius air at 925 hPa. Will
see mid to high clouds increasing as a low deepens over the
central/western Great Lakes. High temperatures should be around
seasonable for this time of year with readings in the 30s. The south
coast should see some readings in the low to mid 40s where there is
a bit more sunshine.
New Years Eve through Saturday...
As with the previous shift forecast confidence significantly
decreases in this period. There will be multiple lows sliding
through. As of right now aloft there is a northern and southern
stream of energy to deal with. The northern stream trough lifts from
the Upper Midwest late on Wednesday into Quebec/eastern Canada on
Thursday. The southern stream trough/cutoff lifts from the Southern
Plains early on Thursday into the Great Lakes region by
Friday/Saturday.
Right now from the EPS/GEFS means there is a weak low that lifts
from Ontario through Quebec on Thursday. The cold front associated
with that low slides through or stalls over southern New England on
Thursday. Behind it high pressure sets up over Quebec/New
Brunswick/Nova Scotia for Friday. The next low lifts from the lower
Mississippi River Valley into the central Great Lakes on Friday. The
warm front associated with this low bring precipitation chances to
southern New England. Given this setup there could be some cold air
damming and potentially some mixed precip issues across the
interior. Have held off at this point from putting in the forecast
and just kept rain/snow due to the model differences this far out.
The low lifts through the eastern Great Lakes/New England on
Saturday, so it still looks wet on Saturday.
Given the differences this far out have gone with the NBM guidance
which keeps highs in the 40s to 50s. Have capped the precipitation
chances to chance/likely at this point in time with the best
opportunity for any precip on late Thursday into early Friday. Still
think it will be breezy with NAEFS winds being roughly 1-2.5 STD
above normal. Folks with plans later this week and into the weekend
will want to stay tuned to the forecast.
