.SYNOPSIS...
A weak low pressure will bring a period of showers to the Cape
and Islands this morning, possibly extending into portions of
eastern MA. The showers exit in the afternoon, but another
period of widespread rainfall will move in from west west late
today and this evening ahead of a strong cold front. Chilly and
very windy conditions for Monday with strong wind gusts. A
Clipper system late Monday night brings a period of snow showers
to the interior with minor accumulation possible, along with a
reinforcing shot of colder air and blustery conditions for
Tuesday. Dry weather then returns Wednesday through the rest of
the workweek, as temperatures moderate to above normal levels.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON/...
An inverted trough extending north from weak low pres south of
New Eng will bring modest low level convergence to SE New Eng
this morning. This combined with deepening moisture through the
mid levels will result in a period showers developing this
morning. Location of moisture axis suggests showers will be
focused mainly across Cape/Islands although a few showers may
extend to the west and impact eastern MA and coastal RI. These
showers will exit to the east this afternoon. Otherwise, mainly
dry weather expected through early afternoon although with lots
of clouds. It will be considerably milder today as southerly
flow develops ahead of next system approaching from the west.
Highs will range from near 50 over interior high terrain to
upper 50s to near 60 along the south coast.

.SHORT TERM /2 PM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Later today and tonight...

A deep and amplifying mid level trough approaches from the Gt
later today and this evening with a strong cold front sweeping
across SNE this evening. Strong forcing for ascent ahead of the
mid level trough and approaching upper jet combined with
deepening moisture will bring widespread showers, moving west to
east from mid afternoon into this evening. A wave of low pres
is expected to develop on the front and move across SE New Eng
which will likely enhance the low level convergence and bring a
brief period of heavy rain to SE New Eng this evening. There may
even a rumble of thunder as static stability decreases.

The system is fairly progressive so showers will be exiting this
evening across western New Eng and likely around midnight or
during the early morning across eastern MA. Behind the cold
front, strong cold advection will bring colder air and gusty NW
winds. As the mid level trough approaches a few snow showers
may develop overnight over the interior high terrain. Low temps
will fall back into the upper 20s over the higher terrain to
the mid 30s along the coast. Wind chills late tonight will be in
the 20s.

Monday...

Deep trough and area of increased moisture moves across New Eng
during Mon with pocket of -32C air at 500 mb. This will bring
partly to mostly cloudy skies along with a few rain/snow
showers, especially across the interior. The main story for Mon
will be strong to potentially damaging wind gusts. Soundings
show a well mixed boundary layer up to 5-6k ft with gusts 40 to
50 mph, strongest gusts likely over the higher terrain. Wind
advisories will likely be needed. It will be a chilly day with
temps well below normal. Highs will range from the mid 30s
higher terrain to lower 40s near the coast. Wind chills will
remain in the 20s during the day, with possibly upper teens
over the higher terrain.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Highlights...

* Chilly temps Tues, then warming up into the 60s through at
  least Friday

* Chances of scattered rain and snow showers Monday night into
  early Tuesday before drying out clear into next weekend.

Details...

Overall we next move into a very quiet weather period well into next
weekend. The most active stretch will be Monday night and part of
Tuesday thanks to a reinforcing shot of cold air accompanying a mid
level shortwave. This disturbance rotates around the base of the
broader trough Monday night. Given a second surge of sub -8C 850 mb
temps we'll see low temps in the upper 20s in the higher elevations,
near freezing elsewhere. Thus, any showers will fall as snow,
certainly in the higher elevations. Not thinking anything like our
latest snow event though, given much weaker forcing and lack of
moisture. Looking at a coating to an inch or two in the high
terrain. These hit and miss high elevation snow/low elevation rain
showers will stretch into Tuesday, especially in the orographically
enhanced western/central region. It will be notably breezy as cold
air advection promotes efficient mixing down of the 30-40 kt low
level jet. That moves off Tuesday, though, so winds will be on the
downswing.

By Wednesday into next weekend a ridge of high pressure builds in,
keeping rain out of the forecast. The main feature of note will be
somewhat unseasonable warmth Thursday-Saturday (welcome back, 60s)
as flow around the high becomes S/SW helping to moderate the
airmass. Overall a pleasant outlook for those looking to spend some
time outside Wednesday onward.
