.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure in control through tonight will lead to sunny and
dry conditions today. Breezy and unseasonably warm temperatures
are expected Saturday ahead of a cold front. This front may
bring a few gusty showers/thunderstorms to northwest
Massachusetts late Saturday afternoon/evening. The remnants of
Delta, combined with a frontal system, may bring some showers
to our region at times Monday into Wednesday. A drying trend is
anticipated Thursday along with mild temperatures.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

145 PM Update...

A large area of high pressure was centered over Virginia and the
adjacent coastal waters as of midday, extending into New England.
The high pressure center will slide offshore during this
afternoon. Continue to expect abundant sunshine in our area,
with NW winds becoming W and SW as the afternoon progresses.
Highs this afternoon are forecast to range from the upper 50s to
the mid 60s, though a few areas could reach the upper 60s in
the Connecticut Valley due to westerly downslope influences.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Tonight:

High pressure to our south shifts off the mid-Atlantic waters
and allows for fairly strong warm advection regime to take
place, especially later tonight. Though low-level temps expected
to rise particularly after midnight (into the low to mid teens
Celsius range), good radiational cooling is still anticipated
for the pre- midnight period.

After midnight, as mentioned we will see the warming low-level
temps. But the most noticeable effect will be the strengthening
surface winds due to increasing gradient between the
aforementioned departing high pressure area to our south and a
rather strong Clipper-type low that will be near the southern
reaches of Hudson Bay by daybreak. SW wind speeds should be
increasing to around 15-20 mph in most areas, strongest towards
the Cape and the Islands. There is a low-level jet that starts
to strengthen to around 45 kt by daybreak, though this is locked
in a strong thermal inversion shown in BUFKIT progs that is not
likely to be breached given the degree of warm advection. Lows
should reach the mid 40s to lower 50s.

Saturday/Saturday Night:

Looking at a fairly breezy/gusty Saturday with better chances
for wind gusts across most of Southern New England given 45-50
kt low-level jet. Strongest gusts mainly eastern MA, parts of
RI with the peak across Cape Cod and the Islands during the
afternoon hrs. Could see a need for Wind Advisories for Cape Cod
and the Islands, but did not have the confidence for such to
hoist on this shift. Southwest wind events can sometimes
underperform, and this may be the case as there is still a
pretty robust inversion shown in BUFKIT progs (due to the warmer
temperatures aloft) that may cap the extent of mixing. Gusts
mainly around 25-35 mph for most of the interior, but into the
35 to 45 mph range towards eastern/SE MA and out across the
Cape. Plenty of sun again expected and this should produce well
above normal highs into the mid to upper 70s!

Though the focus for more active wx turns to late Saturday
afternoon into the Sat night timeframe, specifically pertaining
to convective potential associated with the cold front, there
are uncertainties. Surface-based instability looks lacking but
due to the presence of some elevated instability driven by
steeper mid-level lapse rates, most-unstable CAPE values are
around 200-500 J/kg (greatest further north and west). Wind
fields are quite strong with effective bulk shear values in the
40-50 kt range. Now for the uncertainties. The late time of day,
thinking after 4 PM at earliest, across far western MA will
limit the spatial extent of storms (best chance near and north
of Route 2). The potency of them is also cast into question
given this late arrival time that will lead to both dwindling
instability and a stabilizing PBL that may make it difficult to
fully mix down stronger convective wind gusts.

Another factor is that the best upper-level support passes well
north of Southern New England later Saturday into Saturday
night. It is a high shear, low CAPE setup, and though we cannot
discount a few storms across northwest MA that could produce
localized wind damage, given the uncertainties and factors
described above, we opted to hold on any enhanced wording at
this point. Most of the CAMs and the 00z HREF are really
signaling areas N/W of SNE having the greatest potential for
stronger storms, mainly NH/ME closer to the upper support. Front
will be marching east as the night progresses, though as it
moves into the metro areas it may pass with little fanfare other
than a noticeable windshift from SW to N/NW and cooling
temperatures. Lows mainly in the 50s, though upper 40s for NW
MA.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights...

Sunday...

High pressure over eastern Canada will result in dry, but much
cooler, weather returning behind a cold front. Below normal high
temperatures, especially across the eastern half of southern
New England where onshore NE flow will dominate. Near normal
high temperatures well inland.

Monday into Wednesday...

This is the most likely period for showers to impact our
region. There remains quite a bit of uncertainty, especially
with the timing. High pressure is expected to be over northern
New England and the Maritimes early Monday. The effect of this
should be to delay the onset of any showers, at least through
the morning. Will need to see how quickly this high pressure
moves offshore. Thinking the greatest chances for showers will
be during the afternoon.

Monday night into Wednesday could feature the moisture remnants
of Delta arriving ahead of a cold front. This could lead to
much needed rainfall at times across our region. However, there
remain a lot of moving parts which need to come together in just
the correct way to result in significant rainfall across our
region. Have the greatest confidence in measurable rainfall
across the western half of southern New England during this
portion of the forecast. Near to slightly above normal
temperatures expected.

Thursday...

It is more likely for a cold front to be just offshore early in
the day, leading to drier weather. This timing is not all that
certain, so can see some lingering showers across the eastern
half of southern New England. Near to slightly above normal
temperatures should prevail, as it will take a little time for
colder air to overspread our region behind a cold front.

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Continued VFR. W/NW winds 5 to 15 kt, becoming SW late. Some
gusts around 20 kt ACK.

Tonight: High confidence.

VFR continues. SW winds increase to around 10-15 kt by daybreak
areawide, with possible lower-20s kt gusts along interior high
terrain and the coastal plain. Gusts 30-35 kts developing
between 06-12Z for the Cape and Islands.

Strengthening low-level SW winds aloft (up to 45 kt at 950 mb)
could lead to pockets of low-level wind shear, especially
around the terrain and towards E/SE MA and RI late tonight into
the morning push.

Saturday: High confidence.

VFR but with strong winds. Cape and Islands/Block Island and
vicinity, SW winds increasing to 20-25 kts with gusts around 40
kts. Remainder of area, SW winds 10 to 20 kts with gusts 20-30
kts, except gusts 30-35 kts possible south coastal RI/MA.

Saturday night: Moderate confidence.

VFR, except pockets of MVFR CIGs/VSBYs with SCT TSRA before 06Z
northern interior and western MA. SW winds 10-15 kts w/gusts
20-25 kt to start, except SW 15-20 kt with gusts 30-35 kts
Cape/Islands. Winds becoming NW and diminishing to 5-15 kts
late.

This afternoon through Saturday Night...

Northwest winds 10-15 kt with localized gusts to 20 kt will
continue to diminish and become W/SW, with seas gradually
subside during the day.

The more active period of weather centers around Saturday into
early Saturday night. A strengthening low-level jet is expected
to produce increasing winds as soon as late tonight across most
waters, with seas progressively building as well. Have hoisted
Gale Watches on all waters except for Boston Harbor and
Narragansett Bay from late tonight (09z Saturday) through 03z
Sunday. At this moment, it looks like the best chance of seeing
gale conditions is on the eastern and southeastern waters where
the progged southwest low-level jet is strongest. Gale
conditions are more of a marginal call for the waters east of
Long Island and into Rhode Island Sound, but felt it was
prudent at this point to hoist a Gale Watch for these waters as
well and let later shifts have the benefit of today's guidance
to inform decisions of possible advisories or warnings.
