.SYNOPSIS...
Humid and unseasonably mild weather will continue Today with a
few showers possible from time to time. An approaching cold
front will bring widespread heavy rain and possibly damaging
winds late tonight into early Wednesday, with highest rainfall
totals across western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Cooler and
drier air then moves in later Wednesday into Thursday. More
scattered showers are possible Friday, followed by a cool dry
weekend. Another round of showers is possible Monday and
Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Another warm and humid morning in progress with dew pts in the
60s. This combined with light southerly winds has resulted in
low clouds and patchy dense fog along the south coast of MA and
RI, including Cape Cod and the Islands. Will continue the dense
fog advisory here until 8 am, then expecting slowly improving
conditions thereafter.

Otherwise, band of showers with embedded thunder east of
Nantucket and Cape Cod will continue moving east away from the
region, as weak short wave trough exits out to sea. Behind this
trough, weak short wave ridging advects across the area. Given
the mid level flow becomes slightly anticyclonic, expected
enough subsidence to erode the cloud cover and give way to a
mainly dry day and at least partial sunshine this afternoon.
Already beginning to see drier air from 925 mb to 700 mb on SPC
mesoanalysis just upstream south of New England over the ocean.
Can't rule out an isolated shower or two, but the bulk of the
day should be dry. HREF cloud cover product captures this well
and simulates breaks of sunshine here this afternoon. Given warm
airmass remains in place (925 mb temps of +17C to +19C) expecting
highs this afternoon to climb to 75-80, cooler south coast.
However low clouds may hang tough along the immediate south
coast and especially Cape Cod. Thus, sunshine if any looks
limited across this area.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Tonight:

* Potentially high-impact night of weather with heavy rainfall and
  strong winds associated with a rapidly intensifying surface
  cyclone.
* Wind Advisory issued for most locations east of the East Slopes of
  the Berkshires.

A busy night of weather looks to be in store for much of our area.
PWATS rise to over 2 inches, which is higher than the daily max
value for Chatham, MA according to SPC sounding climatology. The key
to producing heavy rainfall lies in a 70-80 kt 850mb low level jet
that noses into S New England shortly after midnight. Around the
same time, the H500 trough goes negatively tilted with an impressive
baroclinic gradient developing near the surface. The associated
cyclone undergoes rapid intensification, and it is not out of the
question that we actually achieve bombogenesis criteria, i.e. a drop
of 24 mb in 24 hours! 925mb winds are also forecast to be as high as
4 to 5 standard deviations above normal according to GEFS with 925mb
winds as high as 65-70 kts.

So the question is: Can the 60-70 kt winds at 3000 ft mix down to
the surface? Because the cold front comes through overnight, the
lack of diurnal heating would argue against a more widespread
damaging wind threat. However, indications are that a fine line of
convection could develop and bring down some of the damaging winds.
Given that most trees are still fully leaved, and that the nose of
the jet is pointed towards the more densely populated areas of
Eastern MA and RI, have decided to go with a Wind Advisory for most
locations east of the East Slopes of the Berkshires. Later shift
would monitor for the need to expand or upgrade the wind headline.

Wednesday:

Following the cold front passage, dew points fall rapidly into the
50s during the day. Expect breezy conditions to persist through much
of the day as lapse rates steepen though risk for damaging winds
should decrease as jet dynamics become less impressive. Currently
have used a blend of guidance to derive the forecast daytime highs,
with Western MA topping out in the 60s and Eastern MA in the low to
mid 70s. The highs could well be reached early in the day as cold
air advection commences in earnest. Should be a mostly dry day but
with plenty of cold stratocumulus clouds.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Big Picture...

Broad upper trough sits over the Northeast USA and a tall ridge over
the Western USA through the weekend. At least two shortwaves will
move through the flow around the Northeast trough. Current timing
would bring one shortwave through New England late Friday, the
second on early Monday. The upper flow then becomes more zonal for
the early week.

Contours start near normal values, then cool below normal through
the weekend, then slowly moderate early next week. Expect seasonably
cool temperatures for most of the forecast period.

Model mass fields show a similar overall pattern through Sunday,
then diverge early next week. Forecast confidence is moderate
overall, but lowering for Monday-Tuesday.

Details...

Wednesday night through Friday...

Upper trough remains centered over the Great Lakes with a cooler
southwest flow over Srn New England. Wednesday night and Thursday
look dry, but lingering moisture at 850-mb suggesting diurnal clouds
Thursday. Mixing reaches to 850 mb, and taps temps of 6-8C at that
level...so max sfc temps should be in he upper 60s and lower 70s.

Friday upper trough pushes east, and pushes a cold front into New
England. The supporting upper jet stays to our west and slides up
into Canada. The right entrance region of the jet moves over Srn New
England Friday, providing lift and possibly generating a wave along
the front. This should be enough to generate showers Friday, but PW
values of 1 to 1.25 inches don't suggest any gullywashers. Temps
aloft 2-6C suggest highs mainly in the 60s, possibly around 70 in
parts of RI/SE Mass. Temps cool into the 40s to around 50 Friday
night.

Saturday-Sunday...

High pressure moves over the region. Expect dry weather. Temps aloft
0-4C supports max sfc temps in the low to mid 60s. Expect a frosty
night Saturday night, with radiational cooling and dew points in the
mid 30s to mid 40s...so min sfc temps will range from the mid to
upper 30s inland to the mid 40s along the coast.

Monday-Tuesday...

Monday shortwave brings rain/showers to Srn New England Monday, but
details vary between the GFS and ECMWF. Both develop a surface low
associated with the upper shortwave. But the GFS takes this surface
low well south of New England while the ECMWF brings the low up
across Srn New England. Will forecast a chance of showers Monday,
with showers ending on Tuesday.

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

15z update: Moderate confidence.

LIFR conditions continue along the southcoast of MA/RI as low
clouds and fog lingers. Interior locations have returned to VFR
conditions as clouds have scattered. Isolated shower or two are
possible this afternoon, otherwise, we are mostly dry. See
previous discussion below.

improve to MVFR. After 18z, interior terminals deteriorate to MVFR
and localized IFR from west to east as cold front and line of

Widespread IFR to localized LIFR with heavy rain from the cold

high as 40 kt at times, especially early Wed morning. Winds
