.SYNOPSIS...
A weak warm front may bring some light showers or sprinkles early
this morning, especially across northern portions of MA and CT,
although most areas will remain dry. Dry weather Tuesday, though a
bit cooler with breezy onshore winds. Gradual warming trend Thursday
and Friday. The next chance for rain is Friday night or Saturday but
chances appear quite low at this time. Dry weather returns
Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1030am Update...

Forecast is largely on track. Updated temperatures based on
latest obs and adjusted PoPs using a combination of KENX and
TBOS. Surface reflectivity shows an area of light showers
generally north of the MA turnpike associated with a surface low
pressure over Indiana. But confluent mid level flow and
associated subsidence over S New England is eroding much of the
precipitation before it reaches the ground. With high pressure
building in from the north as well as TS Arthur off the Carolina
Outer Banks, expect an overall light NE flow with plenty of
clouds and cool conditions near the coast, with highs only
reaching the upper 50s to low 60s for coastal areas. Areas with
the best chance of reaching the upper 60s to low 70s and seeing
peeks of sunshine will be along the CT River valley.

Previous Discussion...
7am update...

Expanded POPs over much of the area through the next few hours
as radar shows scattered showers continuing to move into eastern
MA. This activity should dissipate by late morning ahead of
incoming drier air.

Weather ... mid level ridge axis remains west of New England,
providing WNW flow aloft into SNE. However mid level frontal
boundary and associated moisture streaming into New England on this
WNW flow aloft. However confluent mid level flow and associated
subsidence over SNE is eroding most precip before reaching the
ground. This is resulting in precip shield on radar becoming
fragmented with time. Thus only expecting very light scattered rain
showers or sprinkles this morning across northern portions of MA and
CT, with RI and southeast MA likely remaining dry. By afternoon weak
mid level short wave streams across SNE and veers the mid level flow
to the NW, driving mid level moisture south of New England.
Therefore expect dry weather this afternoon across the entire area
along with clouds slowly eroding for some breaks of sunshine from
north to south. This is especially evident across northeast MA where
K indices decrease rapidly indicating mid level drying.

Temps ... low to mid 60s for most of the region, with upper 50s
along eastern MA coast in response to light onshore winds. Normal
high is 66-72, so temps today slightly cooler than normal but given
winds will remain light it will feel very comfortable.

Winds ... light ENE winds 5-10 mph.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Tonight:

Weather ... Potent northern stream short wave moves across ME and
Nova Scotia, sending a backdoor cold front across SNE.  More
importantly this shifts the mid level from NW to NNW and steers
Tropical Storm Arthur out to sea. This will support dry weather
continuing across SNE along with mostly clear conditions. However
northeast winds will be on the increase as 1038 mb high over Quebec
combines with TS Arthur well south of New England to generate an
increasing onshore pressure gradient.

Temps ... fairly uniform temperatures given strengthening onshore
winds across the region with lows in the 40s.

Winds ... NE winds 10-15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph toward morning
except up to 25 mph over Cape Cod and Islands.

Tuesday:

Weather ... post frontal airmass overspreads SNE behind departing
backdoor cold front and 1030+ mb Quebec high advects southward into
New England. Very dry airmass streams into SNE from the northeast
with negative K indices, PWATs less than 0.50 inches and dew pts in
the 30s. Thus dry weather continues along with mostly sunny
conditions, just some high then cirrus clouds possible.

Temps ... core of cool air associated with 1030+ mb high settles
over the region with 925 mb temps of +5C over eastern MA but as warm
as +8C over western CT/MA. So highs will range from the cool mid 50s
along the eastern MA coast, warming inland to the mid 60s across the
CT River Valley which includes Hartford and Springfield.

Winds ... TS Arthur continue moving out to sea, well southeast of
New England. 1030+ mb high over Quebec continues to build southward.
This combination results in winds diminishing in the afternoon.
However gusty winds in the morning up to 35 mph over Cape Cod and
the Islands, 15-25 mph elsewhere. These gusty NE winds will combine
with temps only in the mid 50s along the eastern MA coast to yield a
chilly day by mid May standards, especially with full sun expected.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
4 AM update ...

Highlights...

* Warming trend Wednesday through Friday. Chance at 80 degrees on
  Friday in the interior.

* Dry period overall, with limited chances for rains Friday night or
  Saturday.

 Details...

Tuesday night...

Tuesday night the remnants of Arthur move further away, relaxing the
pressure gradient and allowing for diminishing winds. Good night for
radiational cooling given the dry column, clear skies, and light
winds. Leaned on MOS guidance for low temps, in the upper 30s/low
40s.

Wednesday through Friday...

Temperatures will be on the increase each day through the end of the
week with continued dry and pleasant weather and plenty of sun. A
1032 high pressure builds south over southern New England on
Wednesday and Thursday before sinking to the south on Friday.
Wednesday this will direct light easterly flow in the region keeping
areas along the east coast cool, in the 50s; further into the
interior mid to upper 60s are expected. By Thursday and Friday the
southerly placement of the high directs warmer, southerly flow into
the region. This brings temps back toward normal Thursday (upper
60s/low 70s) and above normal on Friday (mid to upper 70s).

Saturday and Sunday...

Around Saturday the pattern breaks down as the closed low finally
gets pulled into the steering flow and lifts out of the southeast
U.S. Low confidence on the path it takes, whether in our vicinity or
further south. For now introducing a low chance of showers Saturday
but there's a decent chance that high pressure once again saves us,
keeping rain offshore. If this is the case, easterly flow likely
brings cooler temps for Sunday.
