.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure moves offshore through Thursday as a slow moving
low pressure approaches from the west. A few showers are
anticipated very late tonight into Thursday afternoon, mainly
across interior southern New England. The bulk of the rain
follows Thursday night into early Friday, when a period of
heavy rain and gusty winds is expected. The low pressure system
gradually slides offshore Saturday, but scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms remain possible until dry and mild
weather arrives by Sunday. An approaching low pressure system
may bring showers Sunday night into Monday, but temperatures
should average near normal. Cooler weather expected on Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

135 AM Update...

Cloudy skies very early this morning in the warm advection
pattern aloft. Enough forcing/moisture and some elevated
instability will allow showers to develop across interior MA &
CT over the next few hours. A few showers will also impact
eastern MA/RI near daybreak. The cloud cover and southeast
boundary layer winds will keep temps from falling more than a
few degrees by daybreak. Therefore, expect lows mainly in the
lower to middle 40s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...

Thursday...

Mid level low moves very slowly east from the Gt Lakes and Ohio
valley region. With deep southerly flow in place, there will be
low clouds and scattered showers at times, mainly focused
across western half New Eng as leading edge of low level jet
approaches from the west. However, deep moisture and best
forcing assocd with the axis of the low level jet will remain
to the west and SW where heavier showers are expected. Highs
will be mostly in the low/mid 50s with SE wind gusts to 20-30
mph developing.

Thursday night...

As mid level low drifts SE from the Ohio valley the anomalous
low level jet will move east across SNE. This will bring more
widespread showers into SNE, moving into western New Eng mostly
after midnight and reaching eastern MA toward daybreak. Wind
anomalies are 4SD above normal with PWATs +2SD so this supports
a period of heavy rainfall. However, elevated instability is
lacking and the low level jet and deep moisture plume is
progressive which will limit duration and amounts. In fact, the
dry slot will be approaching from the west Fri morning. Temps
will hold steady or slowly rise into the 50s. Low level jet is
45-55 kt but low level inversion will limit gusts as is
typically the case with SE flow. Based on soundings, would need
temps into the upper 50s to mix these winds down to the surface
and this is unlikely. Gusts to 25-35 mph appear more likely near
the south coast after midnight.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Highlights

Friday...

The most active period of weather in the extended will be on the
front end, as heavy rain and breezy winds continue Friday morning
before tapering off in the afternoon. Looking aloft we see a very
slow moving upper low taking its time crossing the mid Atlantic with
a sfc reflection displaced north and east over southern New England.
The strong 50-60 kt LLJ and saturated moisture plume will move east
into central/eastern MA by Friday morning shifting the heaviest
downpours into that region. Rain shield moves west to east
ahead of a dry slot which moves in by the afternoon effectively
shutting off the widespread heavy rain. Fortunately, with regard
to the winds model soundings indicate we should be spared the
worst of it given a strong low level inversion which will keep
the strongest winds off the surface. Locations along the
southeast coast may see gusts 25 to 35 mph.

The afternoon will be drier but we're not out of the woods as the
low stays overhead. Cyclonic flow, lingering moisture, and a cold
pool aloft will promote and scattered showers and even a few
thunderstorms. Convective potential is greatest in western and
central MA where several hundred J/kg of CAPE and decent effective
shear may allow for isolated thunder generally early afternoon
through early evening. As for temperatures, southerly warm advection
around the low brings in warmer air; 850mb temps closer to 10C will
allow for highs in the low to mid 60s...cooler along the south coast
where the marine influence will keep things milder.

Friday night and Saturday...

Scattered showers continue overnight as the sfc low center moves
offshore and wraparound moisture moves in on the backside of the low.
Low temps will remain mild with weak southerly flow initially and
cloud cover throughout; most dip into the upper 40s to near 50.

Saturday the cutoff low is slow to exit but the trough axis
eventually shifts offshore along with the sfc low. Most should stay
dry, but we'll probably see some scattered showers, especially in
the morning. The later in the morning we go the more dry air filters
in and the more sunshine we'll get. Can't rule out an isolated
thunderstorm given solar insolation beneath a very cold pool aloft.
Again temperatures will be mild, around normal for early May in the
low to mid 60s.

Sunday...

Sunday looks like the best day of the weekend for those that want to
get outdoors. We're looking at high temperatures above normal in the
upper 60s and low 70s with partly to mostly sunny skies. This thanks
to a building ridge of high pressure keeping things dry and warmer.
Low/mid level winds come out of the west so warmer temps will be
aided by some downsloping as well.

Sunday night through Wednesday...

Still not much clarity on how our next potential wet system plays
out sometime in the Sunday night/Monday time frame. Global guidance
has wildly different solutions from a low directly overhead to
threading the needle between two systems leaving us with little to
any rain. For now, going with increased rain chances Sunday night
into Tuesday before high pressure approaches bringing drier weather
toward mid week. After our warm up on Sunday temps take a dip again
early to mid week in the 50s and low 60s.

Today...Moderate confidence. Scattered showers will impact the
region into mid afternoon especially across interior southern
New England. Areal coverage of the showers should diminish by
mid to late afternoon. Overall, cigs/vsbys will lower to mainly
MVFR thresholds this morning, but some VFR conditions may linger
into the afternoon across southeast New England. Localized IFR
conditions are possible across the interior. SE winds 10 to 15
knots with gusts around 25 knots later this morning and
afternoon.

Tonight and Friday...Moderate confidence. Low end MVFR-IFR
conditions develop especially late tonight into Friday morning.
This in response to a widespread shield of moderate to heavy
rain late tonight into Fri morning. Some improvement may occur
from west to east Fri afternoon, but some lingering scattered
showers are still expected with even a low risk of a rumble or
two of thunder across the interior. SSE wind gusts late tonight
into Friday morning will be on the order of 25 to 35 knots with
the strongest near Cape/Islands. LLWS will also be a concern
