.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build north of New England, bringing dry and
seasonably mild conditions today. A series of low pressure
systems tracking to the south will bring rain, but some
accumulating wet snow is likely across the higher elevations of
Western and Central MA Sunday night into Monday. Dry and cool
weather returns Tuesday into Wednesday as high pressure builds
in from the west. Then another slow moving low pressure will
bring more rain Wednesday night into Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

120pm update...

No major changes except to bump up temperatures in Eastern MA
away from the coast. Otherwise, forecast is on track. With a
weak pressure gradient across the area, sea breeze has kicked
in and there is a rather impressive temperature gradient between
coastal areas (including Boston) which are in the low to mid 50s
vs. just a few miles inland which are in the low to mid 60s.

Previous discussion...

1015am...Per visible satellite imagery, clouds are clearing
nicely across the region under the strong late April sun.
Temperatures have also responded with much of Eastern MA already
in the mid 50s. Further west, temps in interior MA range from
upper 40s/low 50s to low to mid 50s in the lower CT River
valley. Have bumped up the forecast afternoon highs a bit,
especially towards the CT River valley which are forecast to
reach the mid 60s under mostly sunny skies. In Eastern MA, still
expecting temps to peak in the low 60s away from the coast. But
near and along the coast, thanks to a light sfc pressure
gradient, a light onshore flow or sea breeze is expected to
develop and with ocean temps still in the mid 40s, highs are
forecast to reach only the low to mid 50s. In fact, per the
Mesowest obs, several stations on the MA North Shore and Logan
are already seeing a light NE wind. But overall, a quiet weather
day is on tap for outdoor activities.

Previous Discussion...

No changes to the forecast at this time. Canadian high pressure
builds over the region with light shifting winds. With the
light flow, expect sea breezes to develop along the coast.
Mixing to near 850 mb and temps at that level roughly 1-3C, so
expect max temps inland in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Coastal
areas, under the sea breeze, will top out in the low to mid 50s.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SUNDAY/...
High pressure slides east of New England, with a southeast
surface flow developing. Low pressure moving up the Ohio Valley
will spread clouds overhead. Dry air below 850 mb will maintain
dry weather through the night. Surface dew points in the 30s,
with the clouds keeping temps a little milder, so expect min
temps in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Sunday...

Northern stream shortwave digs into the Ohio Valley and then
sweeps northeast to New England. Low level dry air suggests a
dry morning, but clouds will lower and thicken through the day.
Surface low pressure in the Ohio Valley redevelops along the
coast in the afternoon and moves up the coast Sunday night and
Monday, passing between Nantucket and the benchmark.

Low level jet moves up the coast with and ahead of the coastal
low, bringing a surge of 40-50 kt south-southeast winds which
will transport PW values around 1 inch. That isn't excessive for
April, but enough to supply a good rain. Per model consensus,
rain should move into the region late morning or early
afternoon. The stronger winds will mostly be aloft, but
estimate 30 kt winds could reach the surface in gusts,
especially along the coast.

Temperatures at 950 mb will be about 3-6C, which would
translate to a surface temp in the mid 40s to lower 50s. A
temperature minimum is noted over the interior, and with
evaporative cooling once the rain starts, temperatures aloft may
cool below freezing during the afternoon and evening.

Sunday night and Monday...

With the upper jet just offshore, Southern New England will
remain under the left exit region...a favorable area for
generating lift. This setup will linger through Monday. Surface
temperatures will mainly be above freezing, but the cooling
aloft noted above may be enough to generate either snow or a
rain/snow mix in the interior...primarily over the East Slope of
the Berkshires and the higher spots of the Central Hills.
Accumulation potential even in these areas looks mostly below an
inch, but a few spots could reach 1-2 inches on grassy surfaces.

Otherwise, a cold rain for all areas. Gusts of 30-35 kt are
possible due to the low level jet. Best chance will be across
the Cape and Islands and other coastal areas. Rain tapers off
Monday night as the system moves off to the northeast.

Tuesday through Wednesday...

Upper low lingers over the region Tuesday, slowly moving
offshore in the afternoon. Expect lingering clouds, but a trend
to clearing in the afternoon. Temps at 925 mb will support max
sfc temps in the mid 40s to low 50s. High pressure races
overhead Tuesday night, bringing fair skies and light wind. Dew
points will be in the 30s, so min temps are expected at about
that same level.

Another northern stream shortwave digs over the Ohio Valley
Wednesday, forming a closed low that slowly moves east. Timing
of the movement, and the departing high pressure, suggest a dry
day even as the clouds increase. This trend is similar to the
slower trends of the earlier runs of the GGEM and ECMWF.

Wednesday night through Friday...

Increasing low level jet moves up the coast Wednesday night and
Thursday. The south-southeast jet will have speeds of 50-60 kt,
suggesting surface gusts around 35 kt. PW values again reach a
little over 1 inch showing a deep column of moisture and strong
lift. Expect periods of rain along with strong gusty
wind...strongest gusts along the coast.

Light wind becomes southeast overnight but remains below 15 kt.
Seas around 5 feet linger on the southern outer waters, but
otherwise seas will be less than 5 feet.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Astronomical tides are rather low but the Sunday night/early
Monday morning tide cycle is the highest of the tide cycles
from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon. A storm surge of 1-2
ft is expected with seas building to 15+ ft offshore. If a 2 ft
surge is realized pockets of minor coastal flooding will be
possible along east coastal MA during the early Monday morning
high tide, especially the south shore. This is likely the worst
case scenario.

A review of tide forecasts shows projections for Nantucket
harbor reaching the first level of alert both Sunday evening and
Monday evening, but remaining well below Minor Flood levels.
The remainder of sites on the coast remain well below flood
stage.  This will need to be monitored.
