.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over eastern New England early this morning will
drift offshore today. Then a powerful ocean storm develops
off the Mid Atlantic this evening then tracking south of New
England tonight into early Saturday. This storm will bring
strong winds to Cape Cod and the Islands with accumulating snow
for the south coast of MA and RI, heaviest Cape Cod, Marthas
Vineyard and Nantucket before ending early Saturday. Fair and
cool weather Saturday night, then fair and much milder weather
follows for Sunday and Monday. Another weather system may bring
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms on Tuesday. Cooler
air and scattered showers Wednesday and Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

1 AM Update...

No changes from previous forecast regarding tonight.

Previous discussion...

Not much to say -- high pressure will slide eastward overnight.
Should be mostly clear, though some high clouds will start to
move in for the 2nd half of the night. Stuck with a blend of
guidance for overnight lows so expecting temperatures to bottom
out in the mid 20s across western MA to the low/mid 30s across
the Cape and Islands.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...

4pm Update...

12z guidance still indicating what we've advertised for awhile.
Basically a potent northern stream system which is clearly
visible on water vapor imagery over the western Great Lakes
region will be phasing with another system in the southern
stream/sub-tropical jet that is currently over the southeast US.
The result will be a rapidly developing storm that will track
south of here. 12z models in general did trend a smidge closer
to the coast, but don't think it's necessarily a signal of a
trend. I leaned toward a blend of the GFS and ECMWF. Believe the
Canadian model is far too robust with the size of the storm.

Bottom line is that it looks like a near miss, but close enough
to definitely be noticed for the southeast portion of our area,
and especially the offshore waters where it is definiately a
significant threat to marine traffic.

For the details...
Friday: increasing clouds through the day as the upper trough
approaches from the west. Expect scattered light showers
(primarily of the rain variety) to develop during the afternoon.
Model blend for the temperatures looked good to me, so expect
temperatures to top out in the upper 30s in the high terrain to
mid 40s elsewhere -- a few degrees above normal.

Friday Night: All the action happens. Expecting the low to
rapidly deepen and it should be sub-970mb as it passes to the
southeast of our favorite 40N/70W benchmark. In response, the
pressure gradient steepens, and the wind fields rapidly
strengthen. There will be hurricane force winds near the center,
but luckily we are far enough away to not worry about that.
Still, based on the 12z models, 55-60kt winds at 850mb layer to
extend far enough from the storm's center to certainly reach
Nantucket and probably to Cape Cod as well. Looking at profiles
in BUFKIT, there is pretty good mixing in the lowest few
thousand feet such that we should be able to tap into roughly
50kt winds at Nantucket, 45-50kt across the Cape, 40-45kt into
southeast MA, and 30-35kt across eastern MA and the Boston area.
Further inland we are looking at 25-30kts or so. Definitely
shaping up to be a fairly sharp gradient in the winds. Will
leave the high wind as a watch at this point as even a shift of
50 miles further south will mean much less in the way of wind.
So my confidence is not yet to 80% level for converting to a
warning. Assuming the latest suite of models are fairly
accurate, the worst of the winds will be from Saturday 03z-10z.

As for precipitation, as the low consolidates so will the
precipitation shield. Highest chances will be across southeast
MA and the Islands. With all the strong energy involved, there
will be considerable dynamic cooling of the atmospheric column
happening. So initially it will be warm enough for rain, however
there will be a transition to snow. It's a tricky accumulation
forecast as surface temperatures will still be above freezing
when it starts to snow and only drop to 30F or so. With only
about a 6 hour window of precipitation, thinking most of the
accumulation will be on grassy surfaces. Thinking 1-2" across
the Cape and Islands. Perhaps 1/4 to 1/2" in areas north and
west of there. If anything, the QPF and snowfall forecast I came
up with is probably not tight enough. For example, here at BOX
we may get only a dusting.  But given that the storm might go a
bit closer to us, it makes sense to not slice the baloney that
thin at this point.

There will also be lots of waves and with the NNE winds piling
the water up into Cape Cod Bay, there is the potential for some
higher than normal water levels Saturday morning. See the
coastal flood section further down in the AFD.

Saturday: it actually won't be too bad of a day. Precipitation
will be ending first thing across the Cape and Islands. Still
windy to start, but it will subside as the day goes on. Looking
like plenty of sunshine. This is not a situation where this
storm taps an arctic airmass, so highs on Saturday won't be too
far from normal -- upper 30s to lower 40s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Big Picture...

The pattern continues to feature northern and southern streams
through the period. Upper ridge builds over the Northeast USA over
the weekend into Tuesday. A shallow shortwave ejects onshore from
the Pacific Sunday, then races across the country to reach New
England Tuesday. A less-shallow northern stream shortwave passes
close behind the Tuesday shortwave. The two have a chance to phase
before moving through, but this is not shown in the data at this
time. At least one more shortwave moves through the northern stream
Wednesday-Thursday.

Heights at 500 mb are forecast above normal though most of the long
term period. Wednesday values may dip to near normal. Thus expect a
stretch of above normal temperatures, except near normal Wednesday.

Model mass fields are similar through Tuesday morning, then diverge
with their timing of featurs in the northern and southern streams.
The GFS is 6-9 hours faster. Confidence is moderate-high Sunday to
Tuesday, then low-moderate Wednesday and Thursday.

Daily Concerns...

Saturday night through Monday...

Dry weather through the period as high pressure builds over the
region. The leading edge of warmer air moves in during late Saturday
night or Sunday, with 30-40 kt west winds aloft focussed toward
Northern New England. This may bring a period of mid and high
clouds, with the thicker clouds in Northern NY/New England.

So, look for fair and dry weather Saturday night with lows in the
20s and dew points in the single numbers. Fair dry weather Sunday
with increasing sunshine and mixing to around 900 mb. Temperatures
at that level will favor max sfc temps near 50 or the low 50s...and
winds at that level will be near 20 kt/25 mph which favors daytime
wind gusts to those speeds. The inflow of milder air will bring
higher dew points, near 30, so Sunday night mins will be in the 30s.
Mixing Monday will reach between 900 and 925 mb, with temperatures
that favor surface values around 60 or the lower 60s.

Tuesday...

A front stalls over Northern New England. Low pressure associated
with the weak southern stream shortwave races east along the front.
This draws stronger southwest winds over Southern New England. As it
passes, it will sweep the cold front south over this region late day
or early night, bringing showers. Temps aloft support max sfc temps
in the mid and upper 50s, possibly low 60s in spots.

Stability parameters are elevated in advance of the front. Total-
totals climb to 47-50 in the evening, lowest on the GFS. The low
level theta-e values, while not numerically high, do show a ridge
along and ahead of the front. This suggests the potential for some
thunder mixed in with the frontal showers.

Wednesday-Thursday...

Once the cold front moves through, winds shift out of the northwest
and advect colder temperatures. High pressure brings subsidence
resulting in partly to mostly sunny skies Wednesday. Upper trough
from the northern stream moves through, although as noted above the
timing of this trough is in question. But there is plenty of cold
air in the trough...temperatures at 500 mb reach minus 26 to minus
30C. Expect rain showers, possibly mixing with snow.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06z update ...

Today through 21z ... High confidence

VFR and dry weather. Light ESE winds this morning become ENE
this afternoon and then increase to 15-20 kt by 21z except
gusting up to 25-30 kt across Cape Cod and the Islands.

After 21z and overnight ... Moderate confidence with
uncertainty centered around how far northwest accumulating snow
tracks.

Very strong winds develop over Cape Cod and Islands with
northeast winds peaking 06z-09z gusting up to 50-55 kt. Gusts
drop off to 35-40 kt at KBOS and KPVD, capped at 20 kt inland.
MVFR develops with light snow overspreading the south coast of
RI/MA with steady light snow possibly northward to PVD-PYM.
Heavier snow Cape Cod and Nantucket with 2-4" snow accumulation
possible. Low risk of 6+ at Nantucket. Inland only spotty light
snow/flurries with marginal MVFR/VFR.

Saturday .... high confidence.

Very strong north winds continue over Cape Cod and Nantucket
with gusts up to 50 kt during the morning, then becoming NNW in
the afernoon and slowly decreasing but still strong with gusts
up to 35-40 kt. MVFR with accumulating snow over Cape Cod and
Nantucket ending around midday and improving to VFR. Elsewhere
dry weather and VFR.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in the TAF. VFR today then MVFR
this evening and overnight with accumulating snow likely staying
south of Logan but it's a close call and something to watch
today. NE winds this evening gusting up to 30 kt, up to 40 kt
overnight. Saturday morning north winds gusting up to 30 kt.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in the TAF.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Tuesday/...

Saturday Night through Monday: VFR. Breezy.

Monday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible in scattered
showers. Breezy.

Tuesday: VFR early, then MVFR in scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms.

Low pressure off Mid Atlc states rapidly intensifies as it tracks
south of 40N/70W. Large wind circulation with this storm results in
NE gales late in the day. Light spotty rain begins to reduce vsby.

Friday Night... high confidence
Strong low pressure tracks east, however expect storm force
(50kt+) conditions especially south of Cape Cod, with widespread
gale force winds 30-45kt elsewhere. Large waves of 10-15 feet
along with chaotic seas expected.

Saturday...high confidence
Low pressure continues to move east away from the region. Winds
and seas will slowly subside, although Gale conditions will
continue for at least the first half of the day.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Tuesday/...

Saturday Night: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with
local gusts up to 30 kt. Areas of rough seas.

Sunday through Sunday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Local rough
seas.

Monday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 25 kt. Local rough seas.

Monday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching
5 ft.

Tuesday: Winds less than 25 kt. Local rough seas. Chance of
rain showers. Isolated thunderstorms late.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Deepening ocean storm center tracks about 130 miles southeast
of the 40N/70W benchmark. However as the low deepens the winds
along the New England shoreline strengthen. Around the Saturday
morning high tide, storm surge of 2 to 3 feet is possible along
the South Shore, Cape Cod Bay, the outer Cape and Nantucket.
This surge, accompanied by seas of 7 to 10 feet east of the
South Shore and 14 to 18 ft seas east of the outer Cape, could
result in pockets of coastal flooding during the Saturday
morning high tide. Going for us is that we aren't in a period of
high astronimical tides, so that does give us more of a buffer.
In addition, the timing of the peak surge is just a few hours
prior to the high tide (mid-morning Saturday). However, will
need to watch those details as we get additional model data.
Lastly, with the large waves that the storm is expected to
generate, there is the potential for some minor coastal erosion,
especially Cape Cod.
