.SYNOPSIS...
Cooler than normal and dry weather persists into early this
week. Hurricane Teddy will pass well east of our coastline on
Tuesday as it heads into the Canadian Maritimes. While we will
remain dry, it will bring a period of windy conditions along the
coast, especially Cape Cod and Nantucket. Minor coastal
flooding and some beach erosion may also occur during the
Tuesday afternoon high tide. Otherwise, the prolonged period of
dry weather continues through the upcoming week. Temperatures
will moderate to above normal levels by Wednesday, then cool a
little over the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
145 PM Update...

Have increased cloud cover across the interior a bit from the
previous update. A cumulus field has developed due to the -25 to
-20 degree Celsius 500 hPa cold pool aloft in combination with
 diurnal heating as a trough swings through. This has been
 pretty poorly resolved by the latest guidance other than some
 hints by the NAMNest and GLAMP, so have pushed the sky cover
 towards these models. Otherwise the forecast remains on track.

1030 AM Update...

Increased sky cover from CT to Cape Cod and the Islands per
satellite observations. This is a result of trough digging
through southern New England and ocean-effect stratocumulus.
High pressure will continue to dominate as it nudges in from
Quebec. Rest of the forecast remains on track.

725 AM update...

* Freeze/Frost Advisories will likely be needed again for
  tonight...
* Some splashover possible along the MA east coast at high tide

Strong high pressure over southern Quebec/northern New York/and
northern New England will provide a mainly sunny but chilly day
today here in southern New England. Just some mid and high level
cloudiness floating through as an upper level trough moves
through. A few ocean-effect stratocumulus clouds formed
overnight and were affecting portions of Cape Cod and the islands.
These should move south and/or dissipate by mid morning.

Winds will be from the north to northeast and become rather gusty
from 15 to 25 mph along the east and southeast coast of MA.
Gusts from 25-30 mph are possible over Nantucket. It will be
quite chilly today, with 850 mb temps of only 0C to -1C. The
record low maximum temperature for Boston is 58 degrees set back
in 1960...and this could be matched or broken. Highs will
generally be in the lower 60s but some locations may only reach
the upper 50s.

The astronomical tide is forecast to be 11.7 ft MLLW at Boston
this afternoon, which is high, but a surge of only 0.3 ft is
anticipated. This may cause some splashover at the usual places,
but felt that it would not be widespread or significant enough
to warrant a Coastal Flood Statement.

A High Surf Advisory is in effect along the MA and RI coasts.

There remains an elevated fire weather potential due to the
persistent dry weather and somewhat gusty winds, especially in
southeastern areas.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Tonight and Monday...

High pressure over northern New England tonight retreats
westward into New York State Monday. The result is more of the
same weather. Dry, mainly clear conditions. That sets the stage
for good radiational cooling tonight. Additional freeze and
frost warnings will be needed again, in roughly the same region.
We will assess which zones already received a freeze tonight
before issuing the warnings/advisories. We are forecasting lows
ranging from 30-33 in western MA...to the mid and upper 30s
elsewhere, except 40 to 45 in Boston, Providence, Cape Cod, and
Nantucket. Monday will be a few degrees warmer...with highs
mainly from 60-65, but still a little below normal. Northeast
winds will be gusty again along the east and south coasts, with
up to 30 mph possible on Nantucket.

High Surf Advisory remains posted through the period.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Big Picture...

Closed upper low south of Nova Scotia associated with Hurricane
Teddy will move north/northeast. Meanwhile, upper ridge across the
Eastern USA ties in with a broad area of dry weather. The ridge will
diminish through late week, allowing the northern jet to inch south
of the border. A weak shortwave in that flow will sweep through New
England Friday. A ridge then briefly returns for Saturday and
possibly Sunday.

Contours at 500-mb shows lower/cooler than normal heights Tuesday,
but these build higher/warmer with the ridge through most of the
week.

Model mass fields are similar through Thursday morning, then diverge
through the weekend.  Confidence is high Tuesday and Wednesday,
trending to moderate Thursday through Sunday.

Details...

Tuesday...

Hurricane Teddy south of Nova Scotia and high pressure over the
Midwest/South will develop a pressure gradient/north winds over
Southern New England. This wind will be strongest on Cape Cod and
Islands, closest to Teddy. Wind fields aloft are forecast to reach
40-45 kt along the coastal waters of the Outer Cape and
Nantucket, so gusts of 45-50 mph are possible in the adjoining
land area. Values along the rest of the east coast are forecast
at 25-35 kt/30-40 mph, values diminishing farther west.

The persistent north wind will push water against north-facing
coasts, so Coastal Flood concerns continue in those areas. High
swell moving shore-ward on all exposed coasts will also maintain a
high risk for High Surf and Rip Currents. See the Marine and Coastal
Flood sections of this discussion for more details.

Moisture fields show a moist layer above 500-mb, mainly Eastern MA.
Plenty of dry air below. So dry weather expected.  Temps in the
mixed layer will be 4-6C, so expect Tuesday max temps mid 60s to
around 70.

A weak shortwave sweeps an area of mid-high clouds in from the
northwest after midnight, and with dew points in the 40s expect min
temps 45 to 55.

Wednesday through Sunday...

Hurricane Teddy lifts northeast through Cape Breton and Newfoundland
Wednesday/Wed night. The weak shortwave may linger a few clouds
during the day. Otherwise the building ridge will bring fair weather
and milder temps Wednesday. Temps in the mixed layer will be 9-10C,
supporting max temps in the 70s.

Most of the late week and weekend will continue the dry spell. A
weak northern stream shortwave and cold front Friday. Moisture cross
sections suggest a dry layer between 700 and 850-mb, limiting the
precip potential. The forecast will show slight chance pops, mostly
north of the Mass Pike, on Friday. but dry for most people.

Mixing will tap 8-10C Thursday-Friday, then 6-8C over the weekend.
This supports max sfc temps in the 70s, possibly around 80 in spots
Thursday.

VFR with diurnal cumulus diminishing this evening due to the
loss of day time heating. May see clouds linger across Cape cod
and the Islands due to ocean-effect. Cloud bases around 4-7
kft. Winds remain out of the NNE/NE. Expect it to remain gusty
across Cape Cod, the Islands and south coast with gusts between
20-30 kts.

Tonight...High confidence.

VFR with clear skies and light winds across the interior. May
see stratocumulus clouds linger across Cape Cod and the Islands
due to ocean-effect. VFR with clear skies and light winds
across the interior. Will remain gusty across the Islands
tonight, but think that HYA/FMH will see the mixed layer
decouple. The Islands will see winds of 15-20 kts with gust of
25-30 kts out of the NE.

Monday...High confidence.

VFR with clear skies and light winds across much of the
interior. The only exception will be along the south coast,
southeast MA, Cape Cod and the Islands. Will remain gusty in
these areas out of the NE with speeds of 10-20 kts and gusts of
20-30 kts.

Monday Night...High confidence.

VFR with clear skies and light winds across the interior.
Remaining gusty across Cape Cod and the Islands especially
toward daybreak. NE winds shifting to the N with speeds of 10-20
kts. Gusts of 20-25 kts increasing to 25-35 kt late.

A very rough period is in store for the marine community.
Mariners should pay close attention to the forecast.
Rough seas from 5 to 9 ft will persist on NE winds today, which
will gust up to 20-30 kt today, highest in southeastern waters.
By tonight, seas build to 8 to 10 ft over the outer waters.
The seas will be 5 to 6 ft at the entrance to Boston Harbor and
at the entrance to Narragansett Bay. The same is true for
Monday, with slightly higher seas...up to 10 to 12 ft southeast
of Nantucket. Seas will then build further, as mentioned below.

Outlook /Tuesday through Friday/...

Tuesday: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to 40 kt.
Rough seas up to 22 ft.

Tuesday Night: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
35 kt. Rough seas up to 22 ft.

.FIRE WEATHER...
We continue with the special weather statement for Monday. The
unusually prolonged stretch of dry weather continues and minimum
RH values will drop to between 25 and 35 percent across much of
the interior and 40 to 45 along the coastline. It will be a bit
gusty near the coastline too.

There are even greater fire weather concerns on Tuesday.
Distant Hurricane Teddy should generate 20 to 30 mph wind gusts
over most areas but up to 35 to 45 mph for Cape Cod and
Nantucket. Minimum RH values will be similar to Monday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
High astronomical MLLW tides of 11.7 ft this afternoon and 11.6 feet
on Monday afternoon may result in some nuisance splashover/beach
erosion along the eastern MA coast given gusty NE winds.

There is more concern on Tuesday as distant Hurricane Teddy results
in some pressure falls and the potential for northerly wind
gusts of 40 to 50 mph across the Cape/Nantucket. This combined
with highs seas offshore may result in pockets of minor coastal
flooding along the eastern MA coast. This is especially true on
the north facing coastline across Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket
Sound given the wind trajectory and the potential for a 1-2 foot
storm surge. While we are not expecting a significant coastal
flood event, inundation on vulnerable shoreline roadways may
occur within a few hours of the high tide along with beach
erosion. This will likely require the eventual need for a
Coastal Flood Advisory for Tuesday.

Pockets of minor coastal flooding and beach erosion are likely during
the Tuesday afternoon high tide cycle along the eastern Massachusetts
coast.

Island coastal waters.

Hazardous weather is not expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

Strong northerly gale force wind gusts of 35 to 45 knots are expected
across our eastern Massachusetts coastal waters on Tuesday. In
addition, dangerously high seas of 12 to 18 feet are expected for
our eastern Massachusetts coastal waters on Tuesday. This is from
distant Hurricane Teddy. Please see our Marine Weather Statement for
additional information.

...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER ON MONDAY...

The prolonged dry weather across southern New England has resulted
in very low live and dead fuel moisture. With low relative
humidity and gusty winds Monday, any fires which escape initial
containment and become established, could potentially become
serious.

Consult your local fire warden if planning any outdoor burning
this weekend.
