...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 AM EDT
SATURDAY...

* WHAT...Up to one foot of inundation above ground level 
  expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal 
  waterways (2.6 to 13.2 feet Mean Lower Low Water).

* WHERE...Eastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the 
  Islands.

* WHEN...Until 3 AM EDT Saturday.

* IMPACTS...Pockets of minor coastal flooding in more vulnerable 
  locations, resulting in ponding of water on some coastal roads 
  around the time of high tide late tonight.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be
closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of
unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone
property.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will move offshore this afternoon. A coastal low
will move across Southern New England tonight, bringing initial
rain but with a transition to light accumulations of wet snow
in the interior high terrain. Blustery conditions with near
record cold temperatures are expected for Saturday with
scattered rain and higher elevation snow showers. Then dry
weather with moderating temperatures follow Sunday. Low pressure
may bring a period of rain around Monday followed by drier but
cool weather Tuesday into Wednesday. A pattern change to warmer
weather is possible late next week and beyond.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

the temperatures and dew pts more in line with observations.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...

10am update...

Satellite loop shows high clouds starting to increase across
SNE. Forecast is on track with increasing clouds this
afternoon, then rain arrives later in the day per latest high-
res guidance.

Gusty W winds gradually diminish and become SW during afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
Tonight:

Low pressure near the Mason-Dixon line to progress off the NJ coast
early tonight with initial rain expected for many locations after
initial wet-bulb cooling takes place. As temperature profiles
continue to cool, we are looking for rain to change to a very-late-
season light wet snow event mainly across the interior overnight
tonight, with a brief rain/wet snow mix into Boston Metrowest and
the North Shore of MA.

While there is still some variance in individual solutions, the
trend in the majority of the 00z guidance was found to be a bit
further northwest (i.e. through part of Southeast MA/Cape Cod Canal)
and also faster. At this time it appears the general storm track is
close to or through the Cape Cod Canal after midnight and into the
Gulf of Maine overnight. This is a milder outcome and would serve to
keep the greatest potential for light accumulating snowfall on
grassy/elevated surfaces to the terrain in the Berkshires, Worcester
Hills, western Hartford County and into northern parts of Tolland
and Windham Counties. QPF lost to initial melting, snow to liquid
ratios between 5:7-1 and the overall short period of potential for
accumulations (i.e. the more progressive/quicker storm track and
indications of a dryslot working in after 08z to reduce columnar
depth of moisture) each of which lead to accumulations of a coating
to an inch in most of the described locations, with 1-3 inches
toward the east slopes of the Berkshires. Snow rates don't appear
substantial enough (HREF 1-hourly snow rates shows values 0.25-0.5"
per hr) for any notable accumulation on pavement, so the overall
impact of this appears quite limited. However, if some of the 2 to 3
inch totals materialize, there may be some tree damage due to
the weight of the snow but the coverage of this is too isolated.
Into the Boston, Providence and Hartford metro areas, a brief
period of rain mixing with wet snow is anticipated overnight
tonight with little if any accumulation even on grass.

As the system pulls away, northwest winds will pick up with
gustiness commencing as the surface cyclone deepens and stronger
cold air advection settles in. Lows in the upper 20s to the mid 30s
in the interior, the mid to upper 30s for the coastal plain and the
low-mid 40s Cape Cod and the Islands.

Saturday:

Anomalously strong upper trough for mid-May to move over New England
on Saturday in surface northwesterly gradient flow. Due to the 850
mb temperatures more typical of winter than mid-May, it will help
promote very deep mixing with a rather blustery to gusty Saturday on
tap for the region. Expect wind gusts to at least sub-Advisory type
levels by afternoon with gusts 30-40 mph. In addition, the cold pool
will help foster instability type showers with some albeit limited
heating. In fact, there's enough instability (MUCAPEs around 200
J/kg or less) that some graupel or small pea-sized hail can't be
discounted in stronger showers. These showers should dissipate as we
lose daytime heating and as the upper trough moves offshore by late
in the day. Partly to mostly cloudy skies with highs only in the
upper 30s to the upper 40s, mildest towards the coast and coolest
across the high terrain.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights...

* More rain possible Mon, then dry Tue/Wed but temps several degrees
  below normal
* More seasonable mid May conditions for the end of the week

Saturday night...

Core of coldest air aloft will be over New Eng in the evening before
moving to the east during the night. 500 mb temps -35 to -40C which
is incredible for the second week of May. Coldest 850 mb temps occur
overnight with -7 to -8C. Blustery west winds will limit radiational
cooling but the near record cold airmass will yield lows upper 20s
to mid 30s. Wind chills will drop into the upper teens and 20s late
Sat night and early Sun morning.

Sunday...

After a very cold start to the day, height rises and warming temps
aloft to 0 to -2C at 850 mb will support highs well into the 50s,
although still 10-15 degs cooler than normal. It will also be windy
again with deep well mixed boundary layer supporting gusts 30-40 mph
which will add a chill, but lots of sunshine is expected.

Monday through Thursday...

Another fairly amplified shortwave moves into the region Mon with a
frontal wave likely bringing a period of showers. Then additional
northern stream energy will serve to reinforce the unseasonably cool
air for Tue/Wed with temps averaging near 10 degrees below normal
with cold nighttime lows. However, dry conditions expected both days
with NW flow. Then by Thu, mid level ridging with warming temps
aloft will bring temps closer to seasonable normals for mid May with
dry weather likely continuing.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...

This afternoon: High confidence.

VFR through afternoon with CIGS AOA 080. W winds become SW and
gradually diminish. Brief period of onshore winds possible along
E MA coast after 18Z but current thinking is winds will remain
just strong enough to prevent sea breeze from pushing onshore.

Tonight: Moderate confidence.

Deterioration from VFR to MVFR/IFR levels as low pres moves
through the region. Initial RA to change to RA/SN across the
high terrain and into ORH/BAF after 02z. Mainly RA thru 05z
further S/E towards BED, BOS, PVD and BDL though should see RA
mix with wet SN between 05-08z. Little if any impact from SN
presently envisioned with wet runways. Steadiest precip trends
more intermittent after 07z as dryslot comes in; by Saturday
pre- dawn, best chance at lingering sub-VFR across the coastal
plain and SE MA/Cape and Islands.

Winds to trend SE/E and lighten to 4-8 kt, then become NW after
06z and strengthen to 10-12 kt with gusts 20-25 kt as coastal
low pulls into the coastal waters.

Saturday: Moderate to high confidence.

Early MVFR eastern MA should trend VFR. Scattered high- based
diurnal showers could briefly reduce visibility to VFR- MVFR
levels. Possible graupel or small pea- sized hail in stronger
showers, though low-prob. Showers should decrease in coverage
late in the day and especially after sunset.

W/WNW winds become gusty areawide with gusts 25-35 kt.

.MARINE...
High pressure moving offshore will bring SW winds during
afternoon, which will slowly diminish.

A coastal low will move from southeast New England into the Gulf of
Maine tonight, bringing a period of rain to the coastal waters. As
the surface low exits into the Gulf of Maine and deepens, strong
northwest winds are expected to produce gale conditions on the
waters starting early Saturday morning, with seas becoming
increasingly rough to around 6-11 ft, highest outer/offshore waters.
The Gale Watch has now been converted to a Gale Warning, with gale
conditions looking likely to continue into a good part of Sunday on
most waters except  and Boston Harbor due to the colder air
aloft allowing for stronger mixing of gusts.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Tuesday/...

Saturday: Moderate risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
40 kt. Rough seas up to 12 ft. Chance of rain showers.

One more cycle of high astronomical tides during the high tide
cycle around midnight tonight will bring a risk of minor
splashover. Fortunately, wave action is limited and the surge
is expected to be a bit lower, probably closer to 0.5 ft so
expecting just minor splashover along east coastal MA. Opted
for a coastal flood statement for tonight's high tide. Less
risk along the south coast unless the surge is 1 ft which is not
expected at this time.
