.SYNOPSIS...

A cold front crosses the region this evening ushering in colder
weather for Monday and especially Tuesday into Wednesday. A
period of snow overspreads the area Monday afternoon, as low
pressure passes by to our south. A stronger storm is expected
late Wednesday into Thursday, which may bring a significant
snowfall to portions of the region if it tracks close enough to
the coast.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...

Most are seeing breaks of sun this afternoon, though much of it is
filtered through a deck of mid clouds. The big winner was southeast
MA and RI temperature-wise; as expected they've made it into the 60s
(though we have spotty 60s elsewhere as well). This won't last long,
though, as a cold front approaches from the west this evening. Temps
in NW Massachusetts are in the 40s, and over the next 6 hours winds
will come out of the NW across southern New England bringing temps
back into the 30s region wide tonight. The only exception will be
the higher elevations of the interior which will see the 20s. Toward
sunset drier air moves in at the mid levels so should see some
clearing overnight as well which will help us cool a few more
degrees due to radiational cooling.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...

***Period of snow Monday afternoon***

Attention Monday turns to a storm system off of our coast, south of
the benchmark, which will give a glancing blow with a mix of rain
and snow. At the mid levels we see a quick moving, progressive
trough crossing the eastern seaboard. Southern New England is
sandwiched between two lobes of energy, the northern and southern
streams, which fail to phase in any meaningful way. This keeps the
sfc system to our south weaker as well (that is, before it lifts
north of us and promptly blows up over the maritimes). We'll start
the morning dry...soundings show a rather deep dry layer between 950
and 700 mb that saturates by late morning to early afternoon which
is when onset of precip should be. The temperature profile is
marginal for snow with sfc temps near or above freezing and some
substantial isothermal layers near freezing. However, the previously
mentioned dry air should allow for some decent wet bulbing,
especially where precip is heavier (closer to the south coast, in
proximity to the low). This should allow precip to start as snow or
quickly change to snow for most everyone outside of the coastal
plain/SE MA/coastal RI. The best dynamics in the -12 to -18
dendritic snow growth zone occurs in a band near or along the south
coast, so while exact placement of this heavier snowfall is
uncertain, odds are best that it will be south of the MA/CT border.
This would more than likely add up to a little impact event, mostly
accumulating on grassy surfaces, a coating to an inch, even 2 inches
in some spots (especially south of the CT/MA line). The only other
thing of note Monday is the chance for some very minor coastal
flooding issues along the eastern MA coast due to high astronomical
tide. See coastal flooding section below. Snow comes to an end
Monday evening as the low lifts out and a much colder, drier airmass
moves in. 850 mb temps drop from +1 to -12C in 24 hrs. This means
clearing skies overnight and lows in the 20s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
355 AM Sunday:

 * Confidence increasing on potential winter storm Wed-Thu but
   too early to determine exact impacts and location of heaviest
   snow.

Main concern for the extended forecast continues to revolve
around the potential for a coastal storm Wednesday into Thursday
which could bring heavy snow, strong winds, and at least minor
coastal flooding and beach erosion to the eastern Massachusetts
coast.

We are basing forecast on a blend of 00z ECMWF and GFS which
brings low track just outside 40/70 benchmark and one that
climatologically would favor heaviest snowfall from NE CT into
RI and E MA. That being said, that is not a lock at this point
since we are still about 4 days out and there are several
concerns regarding larger scale pattern that still need to be
resolved that would affect the track and intensity of the low.

Looking at the flow across the CONUS, the lack of a strong ridge
upstream across northern Rockies usually doesn't bode well for
significant coastal low development since it doesn't help deepen
the associated upper trough moving offshore. Additionally, the
flow downstream looks fairly confluent and progressive with a
lack of blocking thanks to Monday's system intensifying over the
Maritimes. As a result none of the models have an especially
deep surface low but to us ECMWF might have the right idea
holding onto closed upper low a bit longer.

00z GFS ensembles have shown a notable trend south, with
majority of members tracking low well outside 40/70 benchmark
and showing more of a glancing blow across region, with heaviest
snow focused near South Coast, Cape Cod, and Islands while 00z
EPS remained pretty consistent with previous runs and would
bring heavy snow to more of SNE. Even if the more offshore track
verifies, presence of cold air over region would lead to higher
snow to liquid ratios which would compensate for somewhat lower
QPF and potentially bring higher snowfall totals to more of SNE.
Depending on track, there may also be issues with lower level
temps near Cape Cod/Islands to limit snowfall, but that is far
from certain. A more southern track could also result in a sharp
gradient in snowfall from north to south.

Although there are timing differences, it does look like
heaviest snow would occur Wednesday night into Thursday morning
along with strong N/NE winds near coast. Cold air in place also
means we'd see more of a dry, powdery snow, except perhaps more
of a heavier wet snow on Cape Cod and Islands.

For now, we still need to keep all options on table but odds are
increasing for 6+" of snow across at least a portion of SNE.

Coastal flooding potential is discussed below.

.AVIATION /20Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

18Z TAF Update: High confidence.

VFR with a few gusts to 20-25kt near coast during afternoon.
VFR with light winds tonight, becoming NW overnight.

VFR to begin the day Monday but becoming MVFR in the afternoon
with snow overspreading the area, except rain and snow along the
south coast changing over the all snow rather quickly. Snow
will be mainly light but briefly moderate at times 18z-21z with
low probability of brief IFR 18z-21z. Given temps at or above
freezing, snow will struggle to accumulate on paved surfaces.
Although given 1-3 hours of moderate snow possible, a coating to
2 inches is possible across CT/RI and southeast MA, less over
northern MA. Accumulations mainly on non paved surfaces. Precip
comes to an end after 00-03Z with clearing skies and light wind
overnight.

KBOS TAF...Moderate confidence in the TAF. AMDs due to timing of
improvement likely this morning.

KBDL TAF...Moderate confidence in the TAF. AMDs due to timing of
improvement likely this morning.

Outlook /Tuesday through Thursday/...

Monday Night through Tuesday: VFR. Windy with local gusts up to
30 kt.

Tuesday Night: VFR. Breezy.

Wednesday: VFR. Breezy. Slight chance SN.

Wednesday Night: MVFR/IFR conditions possible. Strong winds
with local gusts up to 40 kt. SN.

Thursday: Mainly VFR, with local IFR possible. Strong winds
with local gusts up to 40 kt. Chance SN.

Tonight...

Cold front sweeps across the waters early this evening with winds
becoming W then NW to N overnight. Dry weather and good vsby.

Monday...

Low pres emerges off the Mid Atlc coast and then tracks southeast of
40N/70W, only intensifying slowly. Mix of rain and snow lowers vsby
1 to 3 miles, possibly less than a mile near shore in moderate snow.

Monday night...Rain/snow tapers off in the evening. NW winds
gust 25 to 30 kts.

Outlook /Tuesday through Thursday/...

Tuesday: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with
gusts up to 30 kt. Rough seas up to 10 ft.

Tuesday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of rough seas.

Wednesday: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching
5 ft. Slight chance of snow.

Wednesday Night: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
40 kt. Rough seas up to 13 ft. Snow, rain, patchy fog. Areas of
visibility 1 nm or less.

Thursday: Moderate risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
40 kt. Rough seas up to 15 ft. Chance of snow, chance of rain,
patchy fog. Local visibility 1 nm or less.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...

Monday and Tuesday...

Very high astronomical high tides will result in splashover/minor
coastal flooding along the eastern MA coast during the late morning
high tide cycles on Mon and Tue. Fortunately, we are not dealing with
built up seas or a strong onshore component because astro high tide
in Boston is 11.9 feet both days. Nonetheless, that is quite high
and will allow for some splashover/minor coastal flooding
particularly on Monday with pressure falls from an offshore low
pressure system.

Wednesday night and Thursday...

Still looking at potential for at least minor coastal flooding
but uncertainty remains in timing and track of coastal storm.

The first astronomical high tide we might need to watch if the
storm speeds up a bit is the 1 AM very early Thursday
morning...which is 9.9 feet in Boston. The one of greater
concern is an 11.3 foot high tide early Thursday afternoon. We
can say that based on a 1035 mb high pressure system over
eastern Canada and built up offshore seas, odds favor at least
some splashover/minor coastal flooding along the eastern MA
coast early Thursday afternoon. If the storm slows down about 6
hours and the low tracks closer to SNE, the potential exists
for a significant coastal flood event and beach erosion along
the eastern MA coast. It is just too early to say much more at
this time...but this will need to be watched closely.
