Snow will first develop over the northern border area this evening, and then spread slowly southward late tonight into Sunday morning. The heaviest snow is expected to fall on Sunday, before tapering off late Sunday night into Monday morning. Temperatures will be very cold, with highs only in the teens to lower 20s on Sunday. Lows Sunday night will be below zero over the higher terrain with single digits over the plains. The colder temperatures and snow will result in snow covered roads, and slick travel conditions. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 908 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020 .UPDATE... Issued at 900 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020 There is a Denver Cyclone west of DIA which likely is going to mess up temperatures this aftn to the north and west of the cyclone. In addition inversions may hold due to wave clouds and smoke from the fires. Could easily see highs only in the 40's north of Denver while south of Denver temps reach the lower 60s. As far as winter weather highlights will address those issues by early aftn. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 317 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020 Winds have started to increase along and east of the divide into the lower foothills of Larimer and Boulder counties as a weak mountain wave sets up. This mountain wave can be seen on IR and is expected to erode through the day. However, before that occurs winds are expected to pick up across the higher peaks of the mountains and along the foothills where many of our current fires reside with gusting up to 65 kts for areas above 12,000 feet and 40 to 50 kts for areas above 10,000 feet. This impact is already seen early this morning with gusting from 30 to 40 mph at Estes Park sites with temperatures about 20 degrees warmer over much of the area compared to the mid-20s across the lower elevations. Mixing through the day will help to bring the mid-level winds down and increase gusting in the high mountain valleys to 40 mph by the afternoon. This will aid in relative humidity values dropping back into the teens and lower 20s along the higher foothills and mountain valley areas continuing high fire danger across the region. In addition to that, several models to include high resolution runs are picking up on some week lee troughing setting up by the afternoon. Models overall have placed this feature over the base of the foothills pulling in warm southwest flow into the southern foothills and Palmer Divide areas. Winds will increase with gusts in the 25 to 30 mph range and drop relative humidity values below 15% by 1 pm this afternoon. These features combined with the lack of precipitation in this area recently warranted expansion of the Red Flag Warning from 1 pm until 7 pm. More details can be found in the fire weather section below. Temperatures across the lower elevations will respond to the increase in westerly winds with highs reaching into the 60s for most areas along the urban corridor ahead of the cold frontal push later this evening. Further north and east will see increased cloud cover that will hinder temperatures slightly and most likely only see highs in the 50s. A sharp change occurs Saturday evening with a cold frontal boundary moving in from the northeast. This strong cold front will move across northern Colorado Saturday evening with sharp temperature drops behind it after 7 pm. Model guidance suggests Forcing along the front will create a band of snow showers that moves southeastward across the area Saturday night most likely after 9 pm. Fire conditions will finally see a reprieve as winds decrease and moisture increases with snow moving in during the evening and spreading across the foothills and onto the plains through the morning hours. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 317 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020 Much welcome relief on the way for Colorado from late Saturday night through Monday with much colder temperatures and snow. This will be a huge help to the current fire situation and alleviate the worsening drought conditions. Expect a nice blanket of snow on our current fires by Monday morning! A strong upper level trof will drop southward over from the Northern Rockies today and then into the Southern Great basin by late Sunday and Monday. Already, snow is falling across Montana with temperatures only in the teens and 20s. These conditions will be moving into much of Northern Colorado by Sunday morning. The upslope flow will be deepening during the day on Sunday to around mountain top level of 10-20kt. Temperatures will also continue to drop during the day as 700mb temperatures drop to -17c. On Sunday night, surface temperatures expected to now drop to near zero degrees and this could result in near record low temperatures. Current record at Denver is 3 degrees on Monday morning. Record low max on Monday is 31 degrees and will probably break that record as well. As for snowfall, still looks like 3-6 inches over the plains and upwards over a foot in the foothills and higher mountains given deep upslope. For now will continue with the winter storm watch, but expect with the expected amounts, advisories look to be a good bet on the plains and warnings over the higher mountains and foothills. Imagine a foot of snow over those hot fires! In addition, there will be a strong 110kt jet oriented across Northern Colorado which may enhance localized banded snowfall. Conditions improve during the day on Monday as much of the energy has dropped south and west of the forecast area. Drier and warmer conditions will return from Tuesday through the end of the week. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon) Issued at 900 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020 Denver cyclone is near DIA with variable winds. This cyclone is fcst to move south with winds becoming easterly. Stg cold front will blast thru the area between 03z and 05z with stratus quickly developing behind it. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 317 AM MDT Sat Oct 24 2020 Winds have increased over the higher terrain of the foothills along and east of the divide in response to a weak mountain wave that has formed. These winds are expected to continue through the afternoon with mixing helping to bring the higher winds into the high mountain valleys. Humidity will be slightly higher then previous days, but considering the magnitude of winds and fires burning in heavy fuels we have a Red Flag Warning in effect until 7 PM Saturday. Peak gusts could reach 50-60 mph in higher forested areas, with gusts up to 40 mph expected in lower elevations and high mountain valleys. Have added the southern foothills and Palmer Divide region to the warning starting at 1 pm and going until 7 pm with relative humidity values dropping below 15% with winds potentially reaching up to 30 mph by the afternoon hours. This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central Colorado. .DAY ONE...Today and Tonight Another critical fire weather day is in store for the region with high winds, low relative humidities and dry fuels and grasses. These elements combined can lead to rapid fire spread, especially around the ongoing large fires in the region. Outdoor burning and anything that could cause a spark is not advised. Highs will reach into the 60s across the lower elevations and 50s over the mountains and far northeastern plains. A cold frontal boundary will push through after 6 pm and bring much colder temperatures behind with snow overnight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday Snow and much colder temperatures are expected on Sunday and continue into Monday.
