Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 250 PM MDT Tue Apr 14 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday) Issued at 211 PM MDT Tue Apr 14 2020 Northern Colorado remains under a moderate northwest flow pattern today and this will continue tonight. Satellite imagery showing some convective cloudiness has developed over the northeast plains this afternoon, but low levels are quite dry so no precipitation is expected. Gusty northwest winds will continue over the northeast plains with speeds up to 30 mph as low levels have mixed out. These winds will decrease this evening as the sun goes down and airmass decouples. Stronger wind gusts will continue in the mountains with speeds in the 30 to 50 mph range, especially over the mountain passes through Wednesday morning with increasing mountain top flow. With marginal moisture and a bit of instability, will see isolated to scattered snow showers in the mountains tonight and into Wednesday morning. On Wednesday, the next strong upper trof will move into the Northern Rockies with increasing QG ascent noted during the afternoon hours for the far northern sections of Colorado. Increasing convective showers expected in the mountains with some light snow developing in the afternoon, but main event not until Wednesday night and beyond with increasing dynamics and orographic lift. Model qpf amounts seem too high in the mountains during the daytime, most likely due to convective issues. The deeper moisture does not arrive until Wednesday evening with the brunt of the snowfall expected. Cold front approaches the northeast plains during the afternoon with convective showers also spreading out over the plains. Continued warming on the plains with northwest downslope flow and reduced snow cover on the ground from today. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday) Issued at 250 PM MDT Tue Apr 14 2020 Models are already having issues resolving the shortwave trough digging down from the Canadian Rockies Wednesday night. The GFS is quickly becoming the deeper and most progressive over the forecast area, while the GEM is too quick pushing the surface feature in and moisture. Following guidance on the more stable and consistent ECMWF, will be slowing the arrival of the heavier snow into the forecast area Wednesday night. As the trough continues to sag south Wednesday night, the westerly jet will lie across the forecast area giving jet dynamics and possible banding to the snow in addition to the overall convective nature. This will start the higher impactful snowfall rates over the northern mountains, have started a Winter Storm Watch at this time. At the surface, a low over southeastern CO will pull in colder air and moisture from the north. However, the main deeper cold front from this system, which will bring favored upslope flow is not expected to push in until Thursday morning. Still, snow levels will likely reach the surface over the plains by midnight for scattered to numerous snow showers overnight, especially along the northern state border. Will likely see Advisory level snowfall rates, if not Warning level over the foothills, though timing has lower confidence due to colder air and when upslope begins, so have opted for a Watch. Inconsistencies in the models for the duration and intensity of snow over the northern plains resulted in the issuance of a Watch there as well. A main cold front will wedge south Thursday morning with northeasterly winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph possible. Good upslope flow will begin widespread snow against the Front Range Mountains, Foothills and the urban corridor. Have issued a Watch for the mountains south of I-70 as Advisory, if not Warning amounts should start up, however due to the model inconsistencies, the confidence in duration of the heavier snowfall is lower. Temperatures are slightly warmer than Sunday's system, so have made sure snow ratios were slightly lower as high temperatures should be in the low 30s across the plains (except southern Lincoln County which will remain in the 40s). Not expecting any highlights for the plains at this point, though closer to the foothills in Boulder and Jefferson counties may approach advisory levels. Confidence is not high enough however, especially as we've been decreasing snow amounts. Opting not to follow the faster GFS guidance which would have the upper trough axis pushing southeast into Kansas early Friday morning, most of the area should have snow falling through Thursday night and into Friday morning, especially areas along and south of I-70. Overnight lows will be in the teens to 20s. 500 mb heights will be rising Friday and into the weekend, except for a weakening cutoff low that will travel across Arizona and New Mexico Saturday that will bring isolated to scattered snow showers across the mountains with a few rain showers possible over the urban corridor and Palmer Divide. Otherwise look for warming temperatures and an overall drier pattern. The next upper trough to move off the Pacific and affect the state will arrive sometime between Monday and Tuesday, however it will be a warmer system, so precipitation should be rain over the plains, foothills and higher mountain valleys. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) Issued at 211 PM MDT Tue Apr 14 2020 VFR through Wednesday afternoon with some increase in mid and high level moisture tonight and Wednesday. There will also be some isolated snow showers over the mountains this afternoon and tonight, but little or no accumulation is expected. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday Wednesday will be warmer before another big change. A storm system will drop out of the northern Rockies Wednesday afternoon increasing snow showers across the mountains, especially north of the I-70 corridor. Across the lower elevations, isolated to scattered rain showers will develop by late afternoon transitioning to snow by midnight. Wednesday night through Thursday night, periods of moderate to heavy snowfall are expected in the mountains, high valleys and foothills. Across the urban corridor and adjacent plains, several inches of snowfall will be possible as well. A strong cold front will enhance upslope flow Thursday morning to increase snowfall rates. Stay tuned for additional updates on this developing storm. Drier and slightly warmer weather will return Friday with just a slight chance of snow showers in the high country. Over the weekend, the warming trend will continue.
