Issued at 813 PM MST Tue Feb 4 2020 Lingering low level moisture combined with lapse rates around 6 c/km, is continuing to lead to some very light snow/flurries across portions of the area, this evening. Current data shows these lapse rates will become more stable overnight, but may continue to see some areas of very light snow/flurries thru midnight. As far as lows, some readings over portions of the higher terrain have already dropped below -20 so a few areas could get down to -30 overnight. Over nern CO, lows will depend on cloud cover. If cloud cover decreases overnight combined with new snow cover, then some places should drop below zero. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday) Issued at 230 PM MST Tue Feb 4 2020 Very small convective snow showers have developed over the I-25 corridor and plains this afternoon. These are producing very brief periods of moderate snow showers with very minimal accumulations. These snow showers should end early this evening since we will lose the weak low level instability that was in place this afternoon. Cloud cover will gradually decrease throughout the evening with mostly clear skies for the rest of the night. The fresh snow cover and clear skies will allow temperatures to decrease to near zero across the urban corridor and plains with a few below zero temperatures possible. The mountain valleys will see much colder lows in the -10s to -20s. Antero Reservoir could even see the -30s tonight. We considered a Wind Chill Advisory for the urban corridor but due to light winds, wind chills will not reach thresholds for more than an hour or two. Nevertheless, sensitive groups should prepare for a very cold night. Ridging moves over our CWA during the day tomorrow with west to northwest winds increasing at the surface. Temperatures will warm 10-20 degrees above today's highs but will remain below normal. The majority of the day will be dry but a few light snow showers may begin in the mountain later tomorrow afternoon. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday) Issued at 135 PM MST Tue Feb 4 2020 Main concern through the end of the week will be periods of moderate to heavy snow for the northern mountains from Wednesday night through Friday evening. Portions of the northeast plains may even get into the act with snowfall potential for Thursday night and Friday. Initially, the northwest flow aloft will increase Wednesday night while moisture depth increases over the mountains after 06z Thursday and deepens up at least to 500mb. The mountain top flow will also increase from the northwest at 30-50kt which will provide the set up for strong orographic lift over the mountains for an extended period. This will provide heavy snow for the mountains, especially over higher west and northwest facing slopes. There will also be a strong 130kt jet streak oriented northwest to southeast across northern Colorado which will enhance snowfall even more. Given this prolonged period of snow, will issue a winter storm watch for heavy snow for the late Wed through Friday time frame. There is the potential for at least 1 to 3 feet of snow possible with the prolonged period of winter weather. Moisture depth becomes more shallow late Friday night as the main jet core finally lifts eastward. Mountains will be going into a warm advection period with decreasing lapse rates and generally weak synoptic scale subsidence. Still, all factors point to impactful winter weather for the mountains. Across lower elevations, daytime Thursday will remain mainly dry with the slow warming trend continuing, and readings climbing back towards seasonal highs. By Thursday night the strong jet core aloft sneaks out onto the plains and models are generating some banded areas of accumulating snowfall. Models appear to be focusing in areas over eastern Weld, Morgan, Logan and Washington counties with lesser chances further west towards the urban corridor. Of course this snow potential will depend on the orientation and location of the jet core. There is also a period of potential upslope for Friday afternoon and evening so will continue a chance of snow for much of the plains through Friday. Saturday looks to be a dry day for much of the state of Colorado with a flat ridge of higher pressure over us. The next weather maker will develop over the west by Sunday and into early next week as the flow aloft shifts southwest. Additional snowfall will be under half of an inch. It will be a cold day, with wind chills in the single digits most of the day. Lows will drop below zero across most locations tonight. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday A strong and very moist northwestly flow aloft will bring a period of heavy snow to the mountains late day Wednesday through early Saturday. The snowfall is expected to pile up in the high mountains on Thursday and Friday, heaviest along northwest facing slopes. There will be a good chance of snow over the plains Thursday night and Friday as well, with localized bands of heavier snowfall possible. Temperatures will be below normal through Friday with slightly warmer readings for the weekend. Another storm system could bring snow the mountain areas on Sunday with a slight chance of snow spreading into the northeast plains of Colorado by Monday. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
