Upper trough is moving across northwestern Colorado. There's
pretty good coverage of light showers upstream of the northern
mountains, so the idea of high coverage of light precipitation the
next several hours looks good. The snow level's down to somewhere
between 8 and 9 thousand feet, but accumulations should be limited
to areas above 10 thousand feet and not much even there.

Meanwhile, strong winds are spreading across Denver at this hour
and will move across the plains. Current forecast looks about
right, with a lot of places on the plains getting 50 mph gusts
this afternoon. Aside from partial decoupling with low level
cooling this evening, the other wrinkle is a possible surge of
north winds behind the trough this evening. This could bring a
little lull to areas just east of the mountains for a while if it
is able to push in, but it may not make it to the foothills and
certainly won't get far uphill. We should be back to westerly
breezes at lower elevations by morning. For the mountains, the
setup is looking better for a little mountain wave to keep the
speeds up overnight over the mid to higher slopes.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

A fast moving storm system will make its way across northern CO
today. The models show the nose of a 140 kt jet max will translate
west to east along the northern border today. During the morning
weak mid level QG omega associated with the left exit region of
the jet will be over the forecast area. Favorable mid level lapse
rates 7.5-8c/km will be over the mountains with the best cold air
advection by midday. Snow showers will develop this morning
across the mountains north of I-70. By this afternoon, the airmass
will become increasingly stable as the right exit region spreads
across northern CO. By that time, increasing downward QG omega
will be developing. Overall, the window for any decent snowfall in
the mountains in fairly small. Accumulations generally in the 1-3
inch range, but maybe up to 5 inches possible in a few northwest
facing aspects above 10 thousand feet. In the foothills, strong
and gusty pre-frontal downslope winds will transition to a bora
set up by this afternoon. The cold front associated with this
system will move across the northeast plains by midday, with gusty
northwest post-frontal winds expected. Models show some weak
shower activity but that will be it. Main by-product will be
strong winds, accompanied by areas of smoke from the ongoing
wildfires. Critical fire danger in spite of the cooler
temperatures. For tonight, clearing with the snow diminishing and
the wind decreasing in the evening. Gusty winds will continue over
the higher elevations however.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 305 AM MDT Sun Oct 11 2020

Rather strong WNW flow aloft will be over the area Mon and Tue,
with only some higher level moisture, embedded in the flow at
times. Thus it will be dry both days. At the sfc, a lee trough
will be along the front range both days, although a weak cool
front will affect the nern plains on Tue. Highs will be in the
lower to mid 70s over nern CO on Mon. By Tue, readings will range
from the mid to upper 70s around Denver with lower 70s over the
far nern plains.

Meanwhile, it will be very windy both days, especially over the
higher terrain and across the plains, near the WY-NE border.
Cross-sections show some potential for high winds Mon night and
again Tue night, over portions of the higher terrain as a
potential mountain wave develops. Furthermore, component along
winds are around 50 kts both nights as well. Highest potential
will probably be in the windy prone areas, in and near the base,
of the nrn Foothills.

Looking ahead to Wed, little change is expected as mainly dry WNW
flow aloft remains over the area. It will remain very windy over
the higher terrain and across the plains especially near the WY-
NE border. Highs on Wed, will be in the 70s over nern CO.

For Wed night into Thu, the flow aloft will become more NWLY as a
strong cold front moves into the area.  With some increase in
moisture and the position of the upper level jet, over nern CO,
can't rule out a slight chc of showers over the plains mainly Wed
night. As for highs on Thu, readings will drop into the 50s over
the plains.

By Fri, dry NW flow aloft will be over the area with temperatures
near seasonal normals.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon)

Strong winds will continue in the Denver area through 00z with
20-30 knot sustained winds and gusts of 35-45 knots. The direction
will veer from west to northwest by 20z, there may be crosswind
issues at KDEN/KAPA until then. Smoke from wildfires will increase
this afternoon, restricting visibilities down to the 5-10 mile
range.

This evening the winds will decrease, and may go northeast for a
few hours. Smoke is expected to increase further, with
visibilities in the 3-7 mile range. The winds at KDEN/KAPA will
eventually go southerly late tonight and that should decrease the
surface smoke, though plumes aloft may still exist. KBJC will
likely have west winds gusting in the 20-30 knot range at times
through the night.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Very strong winds over the higher elevations and east slopes of
the Front Range early this morning. Increasing northwest winds
will develop following the passage of a cold front that will move
across the northeast plains by midday. Strong winds and dry
conditions will offset the cooler temperatures. No changes to the
ongoing highlights today. Gusty winds will likely to continue
above timberline through tonight.

High fire danger will continue across portions of the area Monday
through Wednesday due to gusty winds and low humidity. For Monday,
the highest threat will be over the Foothills, South Park and
across the plains, where a Fire weather Watch has been issued for
the afternoon.

...STRONG WINDS AND VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER TODAY AND MONDAY...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A fast moving storm system will move across northern Colorado
this afternoon. Strong winds will continue in the mountains, and
will spread across the plains during the mid day hours with the
passage of a cold front. Winds will gust up to 65 mph over the
higher terrain, with gusts to 55 mph across the plains in the
afternoon. In spite of the cooler temperatures, fire danger will
be very high due to the strong wind gusts and persistent dry
conditions.

There will be light rain and snow showers over the mountains with
1 to 3 inches of snow above 10000 feet. Across the northeast
plains, a few brief rain showers will be possible. The snow will
end by early evening, with decreasing winds at lower elevations.
The strong winds will continue over the higher mountains and the
Front Range foothills overnight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Critical fire danger will continue on Monday in the Foothills,
South Park and across the Plains due to gusty winds and low
humidity. Winds will gust up to 60 mph over the higher terrain
with speeds in the 30 to 40 mph range over the plains.

Tuesday and Wednesday will remain dry with high fire danger over
the Foothills, South Park and Plains. Winds will gust up to 60 mph
at times over the higher terrain. For Thursday through Saturday,
it will be cooler on the plains but still mild, dry, and windy in
the mountains.
