Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 911 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 .UPDATE... Issued at 900 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 The forecast remains on track tonight. The only change made was to modify the smoke forecast. It appears there is less smoke over the Denver metro than modeled so smoke was taken out of the forecast. Areas across the northern portion of our CWA will still see smoke. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 400 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 A lot more of the same this afternoon. Hot and dry with plenty of smoke production from the area fires. One difference today is that there are actually some clouds around. There is still some lee-wave cloudiness over Boulder, Larimer and Weld Counties. There is also come convective cloudiness around, mainly over the western half of the CWA. Most of the plains have relative humidities in the teens currently. Models keep upper ridging over the CWA tonight and Saturday. The flow is west-southwesterly. There is neutral vertical velocity on the QG Omega fields both periods. Fairly normal wind patterns are expected tonight and Saturday. The south-southeasterly low level winds progged over the eastern half of the plains come up by Saturday afternoon into the 15-30 mph range. There will be fire weather issues as a result. Moisture remains sparse tonight and Saturday. There is nothing on the QPF fields. Will need no pops. For temperatures, Saturday's highs look to be 0-1.5 C cooler than today's afternoon maximums. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 400 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 Little change needed to the forecast for the trough passage Sunday. We'll be raising the winds a little more with higher confidence. The flow aloft increases ahead of the trough early Sunday, with 50 knots of wind at 12,000 ft MSL on the Wyoming border by 09z. There's a little bit of an inversion around 500 mb, probably not a good setup for wave amplification, but that may help bend the momentum down a bit in a trapped wave. This will result in strong winds first over the higher ridges in the middle of the night, and then descending through the foothills in the early morning hours. This will likely spread out onto the Cheyenne Ridge and Palmer Divide in the late morning and across the rest of the plains in the afternoon with both the mixing and the direction starting to shift as the trough passes. It still looks like there will probably be a band of light showers, with a little accumulation possible in the high mountains but most places getting little or no precipitation. The winds will decrease a bit Sunday evening with nightfall and the low level gradient passing, but the 30 knot northwest flow at 700 mb will be with us for a long time. As a result, it will be breezy much of the time over the lower elevations, windy all the time over the ridges, with the valleys and foothills being breezy to windy depending on mixing and little ripples in the flow. Model guidance is showing very strong winds over the Front Range again Monday night and yet again Wednesday night. There's still some question about how strong the ridging will be, which would impact any possible decrease in the winds and the strength of a cold front about Thursday. For now the model blend is fine, with a significant cool down for the plains but still dry and less change for the mountains. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening) Issued at 900 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 Winds are slowly veering toward drainage tonight. Winds will be light tomorrow morning, but lee cyclogenesis over NE Colorado will develop a Denver cyclone tomorrow. Moderate southeasterly winds should develop at DEN and APA. The southwesterly low to mid level air will advect the smoke well to the north of the terminals tomorrow. Expecting visibility to stay at 10 SM all day tomorrow. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 400 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 Went ahead with a Red Flag Warning on Saturday afternoon/early evening for the eastern half of the plains with the heat, the dryness and strong enough wind speeds that meet the criteria. Very strong winds will develop over the higher elevations and east slopes of the Front Range during the night Sunday night. These winds will spread onto the plains around midday, with some decrease by early evening. Humidities will be initially very low, with teens on the plains and 20s in the early morning in the foothills. There will be some increase in moisture as the day goes on, and some light showers are expected over the mountains Sunday afternoon and evening. It will remain windy in the mountains and breezy on the plains through Wednesday. There will be a warming and drying trend through this period. && .BOU WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central Colorado. .DAY ONE...Today and Tonight Above normal temerptures and a very dry airmass can be expected again today. We can expected more elevated fire danger and active fire behavior. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday Breezy conditions on the plains will create increased fire danger on the eastern plains Saturday afternoon. There will also be a bit more wind in the mountains late in the day. Much stronger winds will develop Sunday night in the mountains, creating dangerous fire weather overnight for the higher elevations and the east slopes of the Front Range. Wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph are expected in those areas while the humidity is still low from early Sunday morning through the middle of the day. The winds will spread onto the plains by afternoon, with speeds mainly between 20 and 40 mph. Scattered light rain and snow showers are expected in the mountains late Sunday, and some higher locations may see an inch or two of snow, but significant precipitation is not expected to be widespread. The plains will just have a slight chance of light showers. It will remain windy in the mountains and breezy on the plains Monday. Through the middle of the week it will be dry with a warming trend.
