Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 1017 AM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 .UPDATE... Issued at 1018 AM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 Forecast is on track for a dry and windy afternoon. The strongest winds will be along and south of the I-76 corridor and in the mountains, where gusts will reach 40-45 mph in most areas. 700 mb winds increase to 45 knots by late in the day, and with strong heating and mixing, a few spots could see gusts upwards of 50 mph. Can't rule out a couple showers/storms in the far northwest sections of our forecast area as some moisture and instability is evident on the morning satellite pics over northwest Colorado. Otherwise mostly sunny and unseasonably warm conditions will prevail. Highs on the plains will be in the 90 to 95 degree range. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 256 AM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 An upper level closed low will move onshore into the Pacific northwest and into the intermountain region through the day. A 120+ kt jet will circumvent the base of the trough and into western Colorado by Sunday afternoon. This will maintain strong southwest flow all the way to the surface where a deepening lee side low will form. These winds will help to increase temperatures once again into the 90s across the lower elevations and aid in reducing relative humidity values to critical levels for fire weather. More on the fire weather threat can be found in the fire weather section below. By the afternoon solar insolation will aid in adequate mixing of the boundary layer to increase winds across the eastern plains counties. Winds in excess of 45kt at 700mb will bring wind gusts from 35 to 40 kts across the higher mountains where the jet will be placed as well as South Park, southern foothills and east and south of I-76 by the afternoon. There will be just enough moisture around and lift to bring isolated showers and storms over the north central mountains by the afternoon. By the evening hours the surface low will shift east pushing the stronger winds into western Kansas and decreasing speeds across the region. Overnight lows will once again be closer to seasonal normals with temperatures in the lower 50s under mostly clear skies. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 256 AM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 Main headline is relief of the heat is on the way for Monday, and especially on Tuesday as a strong upper trof moves across the region Monday night through early Tuesday. Much cooler on Tuesday behind the trof and cold front with even some snow possible over the higher terrain Monday night and into early Tuesday morning. Initially for Monday, Colorado will be under a moderate to strong southwest flow aloft ahead of the incoming upper wave for Monday night. There is an initial weaker front which will move in early Monday morning and provide for some cooling for the day and shallow upslope flow, but initially not that much moisture to work with. With the shallow upslope flow there will be some pooling of low level moisture but dewpoints still only increasing into the 40s so overall severe threat looks low. SPC does have a little sliver of marginal chances over very far eastern Sedgwick and Phillips counties but appears the bigger threat would be further east of Colorado with deeper low level moisture. As the upper trof approaches, expect increasing synoptic scale moderate QG ascent towards Monday evening. Looks like best lift will be over northern sections of Colorado with lesser lift further south. Stronger secondary surge of colder air will sweep across the plains Monday evening as winds increase from the north at 25-40 mph. Moisture depth increases as well and will have likely pops in the mountains and adjacent plains with slightly lesser chances further east. 700mb temperatures drop to -3c at Denver by Tuesday morning with resultant high temperatures only in the 60s. Temperatures will be cold enough for elevations above 7000 feet with several inches of accumulation possible over the mountains and higher foothills. Showers will be ending from west to east during the day on Tuesday as strong subsident flow moves in behind the departing wave with gusty northwest winds developing. For the Wednesday through Thursday time period, generally dry conditions under a moderate northwest flow aloft and building high pressure to our west. Temperatures will climb back above above seasonal normals by Thursday and then readings back into the 90s for Friday and through the weekend. As the ridge shifts over us there will be enough moisture for a slight chance of late day showers and storms especially over the mountains. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1018 AM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 South/southwest winds are increasing and will continue to strengthen during the afternoon with daytime heating/mixing and a further increase in winds aloft. KDEN and KAPA should see winds increase to 20-28 knots with gusts to 35-40 knots 19Z-01Z. Winds will then gradually decrease to 10-15 knots by 03Z-04Z. KBJC winds will be slower to develop today and a little lighter in this pattern. VFR conditions will persist with only a few mid level clouds. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 256 AM MDT Sun Jun 7 2020 Critical fire weather conditons are expected by this afternoon. Good mixing will result in southwest wind gusts up to 40-45 mph by afternoon. Humidity levels will be lower than today with values ranging from 8-16% so critical fire weather conditions will redevelop over east central Colorado and the Palmer Divide where fuels are driest. The warning also include portions of Park County and the southern foothills where conditions are expected to be prone for rapid fire spread. For Monday, overall less critical fire weather conditions with less winds and slightly higher humidity levels. However, still some marginal threat for red flag conditions over the Palmer Divide with low humidities and gusty southwest winds developing for a time Monday afternoon. Very warm temperatures can be expected once again with highs reaching the lower to mid 90s over most of the plains, and upper 60s and 70s in the mountains. The combination of heat, dryness, and gusty winds will bring critical fire weather conditions to the eastern plains, Palmer Divide, southern foothills, and Park County.
