Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 335 PM MDT Fri Jun 5 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 334 PM MDT Fri Jun 5 2020 Isolated high based showers and storms had developed pretty much as expected, but they were yet to produce strong, gusty winds. That may change yet late this afternoon and evening as we mix dry adiabatically up toward 500 mb. Only light rain in some spots, but most areas will see gusty winds to 35-45 mph, and just a small threat a couple spots reach severe criteria near 60 mph. A surge of mid level moisture ahead of the next disturbance will keep a chance of showers and storms going late this evening and overnight in the high country. Attention will then turn toward the ejecting trough for Saturday. This system ejects quickly out to the northeast and across Colorado on Saturday. 700 mb flow strengthens to 3-4 standardized anomalies, or about 50 knots, and surface pressure gradient also intensifies. If the atmosphere mixes sufficiently, we'll likely see high winds on the eastern plains and Palmer Divide, so we've already issued a High Wind Warning for these areas. Blowing dust and reduced visibilities near open fields will be a big concern for travelers, including I-70 east of Denver. The only thing that could hold the winds back would be excessive cloud cover. However, even then, embedded convection will likely bring bursts of stronger winds to much of the plains in the afternoon and into early evening. That may need to be handled separately by Severe Thunderstorm Warnings to highlight the more significant impacts. Given the intense flow aloft, any storms and sub-cloud evaporation/DCAPE near 1000 J/kg would bring a threat of 70-80 mph winds with convection. Convective outlook may need to be upgraded from the current SPC Marginal over much of the forecast area. The increase in available mid level moisture and strong QG lift for this time of year will also bring widespread showers and a couple storms across the mountains from mid morning through mid afternoon. We should see some of these spill across the plains but coverage will depend on how much clouds and instability we can generate. Potential for MLCAPE of 500-800 J/kg, but main threat of severe would still be high winds. Fire danger also increases...see Fire Weather Discussion. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 334 PM MDT Fri Jun 5 2020 Sunday still looks like a very warm and very windy day as strong southwesterly flow aloft covers the state. The warm temperatures are going to result from deep mixing of the airmass with models forecasting some 40 knots of wind at 700 mb (10,000 feet) which will be mixing to the surface. Temperatures are forecast to be in the lower 90s across the plains with relative humidities down in the lower teens. Throw in the 40 to 50 mph winds and it will be anorther bad day for fire weather concerns. A Red Flag Warning will continue through Sunday evening. There should be a minimum of other sensible weather, since the airmass will be too dry to support the development of showers. On Monday and Monday night, an upper trough from the Pacfic Northwest will be tracking across the northern half of the state, generating a round of afternoon andevening showers and thunderstorms. Models have been slowing down on the arrival of this system, probably due to the fact that the remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal moving northward over the Central Plains will disrupt and slow down the westerly flow pattern over the western United States. This may delay the passage of the trough over Colorado until Tuesday morning. After the trough moves through colder temperatures will spread across the forecast area, with a forecast high only around 70 degrees. While the chances of rain are rather low, more locations will see strong, gusty winds between 40 and 50 mph near any of these showers and storms. A couple spots may see peak gusts around 60 mph and possible tree damage. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday The plains will see warm temperatures and gusty south winds on both Saturday and Sunday which will raise fire danger levels. Wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are expected Saturday and 35 to 45 mph will follow on Sunday. Humidity levels will be very low on Sunday which will combine with the southerly winds to raise fire danger levels to critical values. In the mountains, a weather disturbance moving over the state tomorrow will produce showers and thunderstorms through the afternoon. Some of the showers may produce heavy rainfall along with small hail. Drier conditions with seasonal temperatures will return on Sunday. On Monday, another upper level weather disturbance will be passing over the northern half of Colorado with showers and thunderstorms over the mountains moving out onto the plains in the afternoon. Some thunderstorms may become severe Monday afternoon. Cooler temperatures are expected through the middle part of next week with a little less thunderstorm activity. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT... Spotter activation is not needed today and tonight. However, any reports of strong wind gusts or wind damage will be appreciated.
