Issued at 855 PM MDT Fri May 8 2020

No need to make any changes to the forecast at this point. Partly
to mostly cloudy skies earlier this evening will return to a
mostly clear state overnight. At this time winds on the plains are
out of the south as an inverted surface trough will be developing
along the foothills over the next few hours. Later tonight, the
trough will move southeastward across eastern Colorado and winds
along the northern Front Range will change to northerly. Another
cool morning with some low cloudiness will follow. Current
forecast package looks good.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday)
Issued at 153 PM MDT Fri May 8 2020

Mostly clear conditions over the region with increasing subsidence
ahead of the next disturbance in northwest flow aloft. At the
surface a deep surface high will push east increasing
southeasterly flow with an increasing gradient as a surface low
moves southeast over the central mountains through the evening.
Temperatures overnight will be more mild than previous nights with
most areas staying in the mid to upper 30s. By midnight tonight
the shortwave will be pushing into the northern portions of the
state bringing strong northwesterly flow through the mid-levels.
This surge will bring modest moisture with it that will quickly
dry out with downsloping across the plains. There is a slight
chance of a light shower over the northern mountains but could
dissipate rather quickly as the moisture is minimal. This
disturbance will however bring some increased winds across the
plains during the morning hours on Saturday cooling off conditions
for the day and keeping high temperatures in the upper 50s to
lower 60s. There will be a slight chance of isolated showers and
storms over the higher terrain with some modest CAPE and decent
lapse rates during the late afternoon.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)

The trend from later this weekend through early next week will be
for an increase in showers and a few thunderstorms, especially
for Monday along with a bit cooler temperatures. From early
Sunday, Colorado will remain under a northwest flow pattern with a
high pressure ridge over the Great Basin with generally dry
conditions at least through Sunday morning. There appears to be a
weak ripple in the flow along with some weak QG lift that moves
over the area late Sunday night and Monday. Moisture increases
with PW values from 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch while low level moisture
also on the increase with increasing southeast low level flow.
Still dewpoints struggling back in to the 30s and possibly lower
40s by late in the day so still dealing with marginal instability
at best. With the southeast flow, could see a Denver cyclone
develop and some marginal higher CAPES values over the Palmer
Divide (500- 900j/kg). This could be some focus for stronger
thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening. Low level moisture
looks to increase even more on Tuesday with dewpoints well into
the 40s with ample moisture for another round of showers and
thunderstorms. Overall, best chance for storms on both Monday and
Tuesday looks to be further east over the northeast plains.

By Tuesday night and Wednesday, a stronger southwest flow pattern
develops over Colorado and dries things out especially over
mountains and adjacent plains. Temperatures expected to be warmer as
well.  For Thursday and Friday the flow comes back more westerly
with several disturbances likely to increase our thunderstorm
activity. Temperatures next week will be close to a bit above
seasonal normals for this time of year.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening)

Drainage winds this evening will give way to northerly winds
overnight as a developing surface low travels eastward across the
plains. Model cross sections show some low level moisture
accompanying the surge of northerly winds, but winds will also
have a slight amount of downslope component which should be enough
to keep low ceilings from developing. Diurnally driven
circulations are expected to produce some clouds Saturday
afternooon along with a wind shift to northeasterly. Any ceilings
that develop should be above 6000 AGL.

The upcoming weekend will be relatively dry with just a slight
chance of afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms over the
higher terrain. Monday and Tuesday will have a better chance of
showers and thunderstorms over the mountains as well as the
plains. Another system may brush northern Colorado on Wednesday.
Temperatures through Monday will be slightly below normal through
Monday, warming back into the 70s Tuesday through Thursday.
