...HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS TO IMPACT NORTH-CENTRAL AND
NORTHEAST COLORADO LATE TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY MORNING...

.A storm system moving over Colorado will bring moderate to heavy
snowfall starting in the mountains late tonight, then spreading
over the plains Thursday morning into the afternoon. Winds
gusting up to 55 mph across the plains will create hazardous
travel conditions especially Thursday afternoon and Thursday
night. The strongest winds will occur just east of I-25, while
the heaviest snow may occur in and near the Front Range Foothills
and Palmer Divide. Very heavy snow is expected Thursday afternoon
with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible, with up to
3 inch per hour rates in thundersnow over the Palmer Divide area. 
Precipitation on the plains will begin as rain and then change to
snow during the late morning and early after. This leads to lower
confidence in the total snow amounts.

late afternoon. Winds gusting up to 55 mph across the plains will 
create hazardous travel conditions especially this afternoon and 
evening. The strongest winds will occur just east of I-25, while 
the heaviest snow may occur in and near the Front Range Foothills 
and Palmer Divide. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are 
possible. Precipitation beginning as rain and low confidence in
temperatures are leading to lower confidence in the total snow 
amounts. However confidence in the significant impact of the snow
and strong wind is high.

PLAINS...

.Blizzard conditions and numerous road closures existed east of
I-25 and over the Palmer Divide. However, portions of far
northeastern Colorado have only seen a little snow so far. The
heavier snow will shift south and east through this evening, with
slowly improving conditions along the foothills and I-25 Corridor,
with deteriorating conditions over the far eastern plains.
Snowfall rates in some areas are still in the 1 to 2 inch per hour
range, and visibilities in many areas east of I-25 have dropped to
one quarter mile or less in heavy snow and blowing snow.  

The strongest winds will remain just east of I-25, but gradually
diminish through the evening.

Southerly flow ahead of the approaching storm system will bring a
mild day. Airmass becomes unstable this afternoon and evening.
Best chance for showers and thunderstorms will be over the higher
terrain. For the lower elevations, scattered to isolated showers
and a few thunderstorms are expected late this afternoon and into
tonight. The convection will be quick moving, so precipitation
should be light through midnight.

Biggest questions with the upcoming storm will be the locations of
heaviest precipitation and the change from rain to snow.
Confidence is high a strong storm will rapidly form over eastern
Colorado Thursday. There is ample moisture for this system to work
with, so leaning towards the higher end of the QPF amounts from
the models. Confidence is also high that it will be very windy
across the plains. Will take a good look at the 12Z models and
then update/upgrade the Winter Storm Watch early this
afternoon...at the latest.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 445 AM MDT Wed Mar 18 2020

Current satellite pictures and observations are showing a Stratus
deck and fog over the eastern border counties of the CWA as well
as over Washington and Logan counties. There is a tad of mid and
upper level cloudiness over the rest of the CWA. Will let the
Dense Fog Advisory going over the eastern plains until 9 AM.
Models have southwesterly flow aloft increasing over the CWA today
and this evening. Speeds decrease late tonight. The QG Omega
fields have weak upward vertical velocity across the CWA today,
and it becomes stronger overnight as an upper trough/closed low is
stretched across the Great Basin to the Four Corners by 12Z
Thursday morning.  The low level pressure and wind fields have
east and southeasterly boundary layer winds this morning becoming
more south and southeasterly this afternoon. By 06Z tonight a
cold front is moving south across the CWA with decent upslope
winds behind it by Thursday morning at 12Z. For moisture, it
increases significantly this afternoon and this evening for the
CWA. There is actually some pretty fair CAPE progged in the
mountains by late morning, then there is even some out of the
plains this afternoon into the early evening hours. Will put a
slight chance of thunder in appropriate areas. For pops, will
increase them from west to east this afternoon and evening.
"Likely" or better pops for all the CWA will be the rule after 06z
tonight. It will be all snow in the mountains this afternoon
through tonight. For the plains, thickness fields and forecast
soundings show liquid precipitation to fall through much of
tonight as the cold air doesn't get into the CWA until around dawn
Thursday. For highlights will go with Winter Storm Warnings in
Zones 33 and 34 and an Advisory for zone 31 from 00Z this late
afternoon into Thursday. For temperatures, today's highs are 2-5 C
warmer than Tuesday's were.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

At the beginning of Thursday morning, an upper trough down along
the southern Colorado state border will deepen into a closed low
near the CO/KS state border by noon. This will make QG upward
motion peak over the northeastern corner during the morning.
Widespread snow will be occurring over the mountains but will be
getting heavier as a batch of high moisture moves up from the
southwest. The snow will start moving east into the foothills, and
therefore have started the Warning for the foothills at 12z/6am. At
the surface, a deepening low over southeastern Colorado will lift
northeast into Kansas by noon. Moisture from the Great Plains
wrapping into the state will produce some areas of fog across the
plains. Colder air will be dropping down over the urban corridor
on the backside of the low, however forecast soundings show a
drizzle set up early in the morning, as temperatures will still be
warm and moisture depth shallow. By mid morning, the upper system
moves east and easterly upslope flow deepens into the area,
increasing snowfall rates into the foothills. Around the same
time, a wedge of cold air pushes south across the mountains and
urban corridor to change rain over to snow...most likely after 10
am. With continual deepening of the upslope flow and colder air
dropping in from the north, snowfall will spread east across the
plains through the afternoon. Snowfall rates could be quite heavy
during the late morning and into the afternoon. As the surface low
is deepening into Kansas and the upper part is stacking on top,
strong northerly winds will blow across the area, with gusts of 45
mph possible. This might produce near blizzard conditions over
the eastern plains, however models have ever so slightly slowed
the eastward progression of the system, and have slightly warmer
temperatures. So at this point, its hard to have the amount of
confidence to change the Winter Storm Watch into another highlight
at this point.

As the system moves further east Thursday evening and QG motion
turns downward quickly, snow will be decreasing. The strong winds
will continue into the evening, continuing to be upslope into the
Palmer Divide and the foothills. Skies will be clearing from the
north, and temperatures will drop into the teens to single digits
over the eastern plains, while they stay warmer over the urban
corridor under the clouds and light snow.

The parent upper low over the Great Basin will continue to remain
nearly stationary through Friday while filling in before lifting
east northeast across the area. It will continue to feed moisture
into the state, for light snow over the mountains, with a slight
chance into the urban corridor. Friday's temperatures will remain
cold in upslope flow, before warmer temperatures are able to push
in as lee side surface low forms in the area.

Model guidance is less than favorable over the weekend and into
the early week, but overall west to southwesterly flow should be
the main flow to keep warming temperatures through the period.
Generally it will be dry except scattered daily showers in the
mountains Sunday and Monday, before the chance increase Tuesday
and Wednesday.

VFR conditions will prevail through 06Z Thursday. Clouds will
lower after 06Z with ceilings falling below 3000 feet by 12Z
Thursday. Isolated rain showers are expected after 00Z, light and
and gusty outflow winds will be possible with this activity. A
persistent rain is expected to set in around 12Z Thursday. A
switch to snow is then expected to occur 15Z to 18Z Thursday.

Southerly winds are expected to turn east to southeasterly by
18Z. A Denver Cyclone may develop after 18Z, this could cause
winds to turn northeasterly. Something to watch out for. Winds
will become north to northeast direction tonight as a surface low
deepens over eastern Colorado.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Scattered snow showers will form in the mountains this afternoon
and continue through tonight. Snowfall amounts through tonight
are expected to be light. For the plains, there will be scattered
to isolated rain showers late this afternoon through tonight. A
few thunderstorms may also occur over the area late this afternoon
and evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Widespread snow will be occurring in the mountains Thursday
morning, with rain changing over to snow across the plains through
the afternoon. Strong northerly winds will gust up to 50 mph
across the plains, creating blizzard conditions at times.
Widespread snow in the mountains will likely be heaviest along the
Front Range mountains and foothills, mainly north of I-70, where
8 to 18 inches will fall. Snow amounts between 4 to 8 inches are
expected across the plains with localized amounts up to a foot.
Precipitation will decrease quickly in the evening with cold
overnight lows in the teens to single digits.

Light mountain snow showers will fall mainly during the afternoon
on Friday. A warming and drying trend will start Saturday with
daily scattered snow showers in the mountains. Another system may
bring precipitation across the area by Tuesday.
