Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 545 AM CST Wed Feb 5 2020 .UPDATE... For 12Z Aviation. && .SHORT TERM... /Updated at 0320 AM CST Wed Feb 05 2020/ Today through Thursday afternoon. A positively tilted longwave trough featuring embedded shortwave perturbations is currently extending from the Northern Plains southeastward into the Southern Plains and Southwest. Broad southwesterly flow aloft encompasses much of the eastern CONUS, including here across the Deep South. Moist isentropic ascent and southerly low-level flow is providing continued warm air advection at this hour, with scattered to numerous rain showers across the warm sector in Central Alabama. A surface frontal boundary is establishing from near the TX/LA Gulf Coast northeastward through northern MS & the TN Valley. This is trying to slowly creep south, though surface cyclogenesis later today will help tug this back northward a bit as a warm front. During this time, one of several disturbance aloft are ejecting northeastward from the base of the primary trough which will provide enhanced forcing for showers and thunderstorms as we continue to experience increasing dewpoints and PWs. Dewpoints should rise into the low to mid 60s across the area as an axis of anomalously high PWs ~1.3-1.5" establishes from southwest to northeast. These values will increase as high as ~1.7-1.8" later this evening, which is very high & near record values for this time of year. As such, periods of moderate to heavy rainfall is expected, with the threat for strong to severe thunderstorms as well. * Severe Weather: A 'Slight Risk' of severe thunderstorms is forecast from this afternoon through Thursday morning. This comes as warm sector conditions across Central Alabama become more favorable for stronger convection associated with a diurnally destabilizing airmass. This will compliment forcing associated with dynamics aloft and pressure falls near the surface low to our west/northwest. As a result, SBCAPE upwards of ~1,500 J/kg is possible with forecast temps/dewpoints along with expected cold temperatures & favorable lapse rates aloft, especially across the west. With favorable wind shear profiles, including eff. bulk shear ~50-65 kts and low-level hodograph curvature from backed surface winds, stronger thunderstorms could sustain rotating updrafts through the afternoon/evening. This fosters tornado potential and damaging winds. Quarter size hail cannot be ruled out if stronger discrete/semi-discrete updrafts can develop as 500 mb temps hover around -12 to -13 C and CAPE resides in the hail growth zone. (Strong forcing can help achieve this even in marginally unstable air.) Whether thunderstorms move into Central AL from the MS/LA areas or simply develop here, overall chances remain contingent on the lack of contamination of the unstable airmass, as well as other unknowns with convective evolution. This still causes complications with forecast confidence, thus hindering inclusion of an 'Enhanced Risk' at this time. Farther east/northeast, lower amounts of instability are expected, as well as less favorable low-level shear. Thus the severe threat certainly decreases in these areas. A second severe threat could manifest across our southeast counties later tonight and into Thursday morning as another disturbance aloft ejects from our southwest with a subsequent nocturnal re-strengthening of the low- level jet. Thus, a separate round of strong to severe thunderstorms is possible, particularly along and south of I-85 (though the isolated hail threat is not likely). Directional shear also appears less favorable per forecast hodographs & low-level winds veering with time. Nonetheless, SBCAPE ~500-1,000 J/kg still remains possible overnight, thus the semi-discrete/line-embedded supercell threat in these areas which carry a damaging wind and tornado threat as local pressure falls could help back wind profiles enough to create a better low-level shear/SRH environment. This overnight/Thu morning activity in the southeast continues to show consistency with many model solutions. Thus, this "separate" threat still warrants close attention. * Heavy Rain: A Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 3 PM this afternoon through 6 PM Thursday afternoon. This is for areas along and east of a line from Blount County to Perry County. As advertised, multiple instances of moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected across Central Alabama this afternoon and into tomorrow. Overall, an axis of anomalously high PWs will collocate with ample synoptic forcing for ~24-36 hours, along with a stout low-level jet able to actively replenish convection with Gulf moisture. This residence time leaves plenty of opportunity for heavy accumulations - likely 2-4" with locally higher amounts across the watch area. Thus, flooding is possible across local streams and low-lying areas, as well as urban areas. Flash Flooding is possible if persistent mesoscale banding of convective rainfall can establish. This has appeared in several hi- res model simulations, though exact placement has varied. With time, a cold front will enter our northwest (likely by Thursday morning). By Thursday evening, cold frontal passage will continue eastward and signal decreasing rain chances & rainfall intensity area-wide. A cooler/drier airmass will move into the area and stabilize weather conditions during this time, though some light rain can't be ruled out with temperatures dropping into the 40s/50s. 40/Sizemore .LONG TERM... /Updated at 0320 AM CST Wed Feb 05 2020/ Thursday Night through Through Tuesday. As we progress into Thursday night the system will begin to exit the area. Still going to have some lingering rain that will be occurring post-frontal, with the best chances in the east through the overnight hours. Rain will be shifting east through the night and should exit the region by sunrise. Will keep precipitation as liquid through the period. Colder and dry on Friday with the wrap around cloud cover from the upper level system moving through. The next system will move quickly into the region on Saturday and bring a chance of rain by the afternoon and into the evening hours. This system moves out and then the next system moves in Monday from the west as a front, but will stall out by Tuesday morning across the north, before lifting slowly northward on Tuesday. Models are indicating that this front may sit across the north for several days and may become a flooding issue here. Much more on this as the system draws closer. Lows will be in the 30s and 40s through the weekend and then the 40s and 50s by Monday and Tuesday. Highs will be in the 50s to low 60s through the weekend and then the 60s and 70s by Tuesday. 16 && .AVIATION... 12Z TAF Discussion. Most Central Alabama airfields are experiencing morning IFR conditions, with the exception of ASN/ANB - both of which are at MVFR. Rain shower activity is affecting BHM/TCL, with thunderstorms off to the northwest. Trends for rainfall and thunderstorms today will exhibit increasing coverage, thus inclusion of VCTS & CB at all terminals throughout the afternoon & evening in some capacity. Showers and storms will result in periods of heavy rain, lowered cigs/vis, as well as local turbulence. TEMPOs were used at BHM/TOI for respective local impacts this morning. Southerly winds at 7-12 kts should be expected today with occasional higher gusts ~20 kts. Hopefully, gusts will die off in the evening. Otherwise, there may be periods this afternoon with enough mixing such that skies clear/lift a bit - possibly to VFR at MGM/TOI, though kept the overall theme to MVFR. This is a rather messy storm system forecast to move through the region, so flight impacts could be felt in various ways for the next 24-36 hours.
