.Runoff from mountain snow melt is making its way through the
Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers near Williston. Minor flooding is
expected on the Missouri River near Williston, cresting around 23
feet this weekend. High water will remain in the area before falling
to near normal water levels by mid-June. Water on the parking lot of
the Lewis and Clark boat ramp along with inundation of low-lying
agricultural fields are the most likely impacts to be observed.

Issued at 1033 AM CDT Wed Jun 3 2020 We increased PoPs along and west of Highway 83 through the early afternoon with this update, reflecting slightly faster, further- north, and denser coverage to early-day convection. The activity is occurring in an environment characterized by steep midlevel lapse rates and moderate deep layer shear on the order of 30 kt, and has produced some small hail this morning. Low-level moisture advection is increasing on southerly flow ahead of a frontal zone in eastern MT as of 15 UTC, but based on upstream observations, including convection in central SD, some uncertainty exists with regard to the quality of boundary layer moisture by afternoon. Still, even the model simulations with more modest moisture fields support 1000-1500 J/kg of MLCAPE developing by afternoon, and thus additional, surface-based thunderstorms may develop along the cold front as it reaches central and southwestern ND. Those storms may pose a marginal severe risk, though we have some uncertainty with regard to their development too given the aforementioned questions on moisture return, but also the early-day/ongoing activity, which is not well-assimilated by the latest CAMs. Otherwise, we also increased post-frontal west-northwest winds in western and north central ND with this update with 20 to 30 mph speeds likely. This is supported by GFS/HRRR soundings and the KGGW VWP, which has ~30 kt of wind within 3000 ft AGL this morning. UPDATE Issued at 645 AM CDT Wed Jun 3 2020 Have updated sky grids based on satellite and pops based on Radar and latest runs of Convective Allowing Models. Basically the change to sky was to decrease amounts a bit. On pops it was to delay them by two hours in southwest North Dakota and then slow their eastward movement. Radar shows the storms in southeast Montana moving into South Dakota, as expected. What is lacking is the northward building of those storms that I expected. The latest HRRR develops a line of storms around Dickinson later this morning and moves them east through Bismarck early this afternoon, still on track with earlier expectations. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 545 AM CDT Wed Jun 3 2020 A shortwave trough along the Montana / Wyoming border this morning coupled with convergence along a surface trough extending through eastern Montana from a surface low in Saskatchewan, was triggering showers and storms in southeast Montana and into northeast Wyoming. Movement was east, toward the northwest part of South Dakota. This in zonal flow aloft. As the morning wears on today CAPE, that was non-existent in southwest North Dakota, is forecast to increase with increasing low level moisture. MUCAPE reaches into the 1300-1500 J/kg level into the southwest part of the forecast area. The Convective Allowing Models agree on that convection developing to the north with differences in how far north. For now have taken an average of them and kept activity mainly in the southwest, advancing east into the Bismarck area early this afternoon. By early afternoon MUCAPE increases to around 2500 J/kg as dew points climb through the 50s. At the same time, along the South Dakota border, mid level lapse rates approach 9 deg C/km. With those ingredients any storms that are on-going could reach severe limits with hail as large as half-dollar size and winds to 60 mph. Again, the most probable place for that would be south of Interstate 94 and west of the Missouri River. Storms weaken as they push east this evening, again, mainly across the south. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 545 AM CDT Wed Jun 3 2020 With a series of waves coming through the fast zonal flow, with cutoff H5 low in Saskatchewan and into Manitoba, timing of storm chances will be difficult. There are chances nearly each forecast period until the H5 ridge builds on Friday in response to a deepening west coast trough. In southwest flow aloft with diffluent flow over North Dakota and wave after wave moving through from Saturday through Sunday, the chances for showers and storms is very high.
