central North Dakota Wednesday afternoon and evening. West winds
gusting up to 45 mph Wednesday afternoon will shift northwest at
up to 55 mph late Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening with
the passage of a cold front. The combination of strong, shifting
winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures will create
potentially serious fire weather conditions Wednesday afternoon

* WINDS...West 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph this 
  afternoon. Winds will shift to the northwest and gust as high 
  as 55 mph late this afternoon and evening.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 15 to 20 percent.

* AFFECTED AREA...Western and most of central North Dakota. The 
  worst conditions are expected in southwest North Dakota.

* IMPACTS...Any fires that ignite will spread rapidly and become 
  difficult to control or suppress. Those outdoors or working in 
  agriculture fields should be mindful of any sparks that may 
  start wildfires.

AND MUCH OF CENTRAL NORTH DAKOTA...

.As of 630 PM a strong cold front has advanced as for as 
Dickinson to Hazen to Minot. Along and behind this front expect a 
northwest wind shift with gusts over 50 MPH. Expect these same 
conditions as this front moves eastward through this evening. With
strong, shifting winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures
critical fire weather conditions will continue into this evening.
Any fires that ignite will be capable of spreading rapidly and 
erratically.

We added low PoPs for showers in northwest ND this afternoon with
this update based on upstream radar trends, though a dry boundary
layer likely means much of the precipitation may evaporate before
reaching the ground. Otherwise, winds are increasing on target
with our expectations, and have met advisory criteria already in
western ND as of 17 UTC. Mixing is also ongoing and humidity
values will only continue to lower the next few hours, so no
changes are being made to headlines with this update. We'll re-
evaluate Wednesday's Fire Weather Watch with the next update and
consider upgrading all or parts of it for tomorrow's event.

UPDATE Issued at 913 AM CDT Tue Sep 1 2020

We increased sky cover north and east this morning in this update
to reflect observed trends of more expansive high cloud cover in
the warm sector of the surface low in east central Saskatchewan as
of 14 UTC. We also boosted wind speeds this afternoon and evening,
but the theme of the going forecast remains in tact, though we are
advertising gusts to 50 mph now, mainly in northwest ND The 12
UTC Bismarck RAOB revealed that the nocturnal inversion was about
1400 ft AGL in depth, with the temperature at its top in the mid
60s F, and then a deep residual layer with near dry adiabatic
lapse rates extending to about 600 mb. We thus expect a rapid
uptick in winds and temperatures in the mid to late morning as
this inversion breaks. By this afternoon, strong deep-layer wind
fields -- exemplified by a 500 mb jet core of ~70 kt -- will cross
the region in the wake of the trough axis, yielding advisory-level
winds, and Red Flag conditions where humidity lowers to critical
ranges. No changes with headlines with this update.

Forecast looks on track - just waiting for the wind to come up,
soon. 2 MB surface pressure falls over the past three hours have
worked in to the Crosby area with steeper falls on their way.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Bottom Line Up Front - Have posted a Wind Advisory headline for
most of the forecast area for today, all but the far southern
James River Valley. Have reposted and expanded by a county or two
the Red Flag Warning for today. Have posted a Fire Weather Watch
for Wednesday. Headlines for wind may (probably will) be needed
for Wednesday, but one, or maybe I should say, three, things at a
time.

4 MB pressure falls were already evident across Saskatchewan early
this Tuesday morning. This ahead of a pre frontal trough that will
be passing through the area later today. The lapse rate will be dry
adiabatic high enough into the atmosphere to mix 30 knot wind
gusts to the surface along the South Dakota border, to as high as
40 knot gusts along U.S. Highway 2 today. Sustained winds will be
in the 20s. That mixing will also bring dry air to the surface in
the form of lower dew points. Those speeds, coupled with minimum
relative humidity values in the 20s this afternoon, and ongoing
dry fuels in most areas, warrant fire weather headlines.

Mostly sunny today, though there is mid level support to that
surface feature passing through later today, in the form of an H5
short wave trough. Some of the synoptic scale models, and the
CAMS, keep most of the showers and storms with this in Canada, but
a few clip the northeast part of the forecast area, Bottineau
through Rolette and Pierce counties, with weak simulated
reflectivity (showers). Again, best chances are north of the
border and north of Devil's Lake and Grand Forks, but with weak
moisture pooling forecast there and some weak MUCAPE, a shower is
not out of the question. An isolated shower possible late this
afternoon in those three counties.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Look for warmer weather on Wednesday, into the 80s ahead of an
advancing cold front that will bring even higher wind speeds and
lower dewpoint air. Despite the complicated nature of having so
many weather headlines posted, in collaboration with neighbors to
the west and south, and looking to national guidance on fire
weather from SPC, we opted to go with a Fire Weather Watch for
Wednesday (that will need to be upgraded for at least some of the
counties included in that Wednesday watch). Wind headlines will
also be needed, possible even a high wind warning at some point.
The passage of that front on Wednesday also brings scattered
showers and maybe a thunderstorm.

A roller coaster of cooler and warmer to end the week, before
what looks like a very cool upcoming holiday weekend. By that we
are talking 20 degrees below normal for highs Sunday and Monday.
Maybe so, along with chances for showers. At this point Saturday
looks like the warmest and driest of all three holiday weekend
days. Might want to enjoy that day.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

VFR conditions will continue across western and central ND through
the 18 UTC TAF cycle. West-northwest winds gusting to around 40 kt
will diminish this evening as a surface trough exits the area, but
another round of strong winds is likely Wednesday and Wednesday
evening ahead of and in association with a cold frontal passage.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 420 AM CDT Tue Sep 1 2020

The Red Flag Warning posted on Monday for today continues and was
expanded to include Sioux County. With a surface trough passage
wind speeds will be sustained in the 20s across the area with
minimum RH also in the 20s west into the central parts of the
state. The atmosphere will mix dry adiabatically high enough to
mix these speeds down to the surface, and with that mixing out,
possibly dew point temperatures lower than what is currently
forecast.

There is recovery of RH tonight and decreasing winds.

On Wednesday a cold front will take aim on the area with wind
speeds possibly higher than today and RH possibly lower. With this
possibility we have opted to post a Fire Weather Watch for
Wednesday, with the expectation that parts of it will need an
upgrade to warning.
