No changes needed for the early afternoon update. Did freshen up
the Fire Weather Watch to include wording that near critical
conditions may now linger into Wednesday. This threat will be
assessed in subsequent updates. Those impacted should stay tune
to the latest forecast.

UPDATE Issued at 1019 AM CDT Mon Aug 31 2020

Limited changes needed for this update. Adjusted some of the winds
based on current obs. This may have slightly decreased them,
although a breezy day is overall expected. Near critical fire
danger is also possible today as RH values dip into the upper
teens to low 20s. With some recent rain and winds on the marginal
end of critical thresholds, will hold off on a Red Flag Warning at
this point. Tuesday and now Wednesday look to have stronger winds
and continued low RH. A Fire Weather Watch continues for Tuesday
for this threat, and will continued to be evaluated for Wednesday.

UPDATE Issued at 638 AM CDT Mon Aug 31 2020

No changes are needed for this update. A few locations in far
northwest and north central North Dakota have seen temperatures
dip into the mid 30s!

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 400 AM CDT Mon Aug 31 2020

An occluded upper low currently sits over central Saskatchewan/
Manitoba, with a trough axis extending down through eastern North
Dakota. A cooler air mass is settling in behind the trough, with
surface high pressure centered near the Black Hills. Temperatures
have fallen into the upper 30s at some locations across far
northwest and north central North Dakota early this morning. With a
few more hours of cooling to go, we could see lows bottom out in the
mid 30s, and even some patchy frost is not out of question.

The upper low/trough system is forecast to swing toward Hudson Bay
today while a separate shortwave slides down the Northern Rockies.
Quiet but breezy weather is expected today. Westerly winds will
increase to 15-20 mph this afternoon, strongest across the north and
into the James River Valley. Relative humidity is forecast to fall
around 20 percent across western and parts of central North Dakota
this afternoon, which may result in near critical fire weather
conditions.

Another quiet and cool night is on tap as we remain under the
influence of surface high pressure to the south and east. Lows
tonight are expected to range from around 40 along the Canadian
border to 50 in the James River Valley.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

The main concern for the long term period is windy conditions,
peaking late Wednesday as a powerful cold front blasts through the
region. Critical fire weather conditions are possible across western
and central North Dakota Tuesday and Wednesday.

A clipper system is forecast to move across Manitoba on Tuesday. The
main impact this will have on western and central North Dakota is
westerly winds increasing near 30 mph. With highs in the 70s and
relative humidity falling into the 20-30 percent range, critical
fire weather conditions will be possible across much of western and
central North Dakota Tuesday afternoon and early evening. A Fire
Weather Watch has been issued.

On Wednesday, a more powerful Alberta clipper is forecast to scream
through the Northern Plains. Most of western and central North
Dakota will remain in the warm sector of the clipper through peak
diurnal heating, allowing temperatures to climb into the 80s.
Westerly winds in the warm sector could reach 25 mph, and again
combined with relative humidity below 30 percent, this could result
in critical fire weather conditions. The greatest likelihood of
critical fire weather conditions on Wednesday is in southwest North
Dakota.

The cold front associated with the clipper is forecast to arrive in
northwest North Dakota by Wednesday evening and will quickly move
through the state by the middle of the night. There are several
factors pointing toward a potential high wind event with the cold
frontal passage, including very strong pressure rises, cold air
advection, and mean mixing layer winds approaching 50 kts. One
possible mitigating factor for strong winds is that the front will
pass through most of the area after peak mixing. But the pressure
rise signal is concerning and has been known to overcome any effects
of the loss of daytime heating on boundary layer mixing.
Additionally, there will be a chance of showers and possibly a few
thunderstorms along the cold front as it moves through. Severe
weather is not expected, though synoptic background wind gusts could
approach severe storm wind criteria.

It will remain breezy on Thursday as the Northern Plains still sits
on the periphery of cyclonic flow from the clipper. It will also be
quite a bit cooler on Thursday, with highs in the mid 60s to lower
70s. Long range guidance favors northwest flow aloft continuing
through the weekend, with another potentially strong clipper moving
through late Saturday into Sunday. This pattern would favor a quick
warming trend Friday and Saturday followed by much cooler
temperatures Sunday, and windy conditions through the weekend with a
slight chance of rain.

VFR conditions are expected for the forecast period. Breezy winds
will be found today with most sites gusting to near 25 kts. Winds
