High pressure and quiet weather this afternoon will transition
into an active period late tonight into Monday. A powerful storm
system will track into the Great Lakes and bring strong winds
along with rain showers, and a chance of thunderstorms to the
region on Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
945 am Update...
No major changes just made some tweaks to temperatures and
dewpoints based on latest NBM guidance. More on upcoming storm
with early afternoon update.

410 am update...
Main concerns in the near term are focused on the
strengthening, complex low pressure system moving through the
Great Lakes that will bring strong winds, heavy rain and
thunderstorms to central NY and ne PA Monday.

A High Wind Watch has been issued for portions of central NY.
Although much of the region will see strong wind gusts, the area
highlighted under the watch will likely see some of the
strongest wind gusts during the day Monday.

Weather conditions today (Sunday) will be relatively quiet with
a broad upper level ridge of high pressure keeping skies mainly
clear in the morning and increasing deep moisture from the
southwest ushering thicker cloud cover later in the day. There
could be a few very light rain showers/sprinkles through the
morning, but boundary layer mixing in the afternoon should bring
any remaining precip to a end. Afternoon temperatures today
should warm nicely into the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Primary focus on Monday continues to center around the
potential for heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms. Model
guidance remains in fairly good agreement with respect to a
developing low pressure system that will move from the lower MS
Valley region this evening into the central Great Lakes by
Monday morning. A warm front extending to the east will lift
north across a large portion of the Eastern US with a robust
supply of deep moisture behind the front that will spread across
PA and NY late tonight/early Monday morning. Widespread layer
lifting within this moist air mass will create favorable
conditions for moderate steady rain after midnight until just
after sunrise Mon morning. The placement of heaviest rain still
appears to be across the nrn Allegheny plateau, Poconos and srn
Catskills where generally 1-1.5 inches is possible. The flooding
threat still appears minimal, but is also non-zero. The second
round of showers and storms later Monday may be more of concern,
especially if the same area gets hit twice with heavy rain.

The surface low will deepen rapidly when reaching the Great
Lakes Monday morning, which will induce strong tightening of the
sfc pressure gradient across the Northeast US. Sustained
southeast winds at the surface will reach 20 to 30 mph in the
morning, with the flow just above the surface capable of mixing
down 30 to 45 mph gusts over much of the region. There may be
slightly stronger winds across the lake plain of the central/nrn
Finger Lakes where winds could gust up to 60 mph.

The focus in the late morning and afternoon then shifts to the
potential for strong to possibly severe thunderstorms. The
threat will be highly conditional on the amount of boundary
layer instability that can be realized. Much of the region will
be covered in clouds through the morning, but there is some
indication that a dry slot may be able to work in from the
sw...and scatter out some of the clouds ahead of the cold
frontal passage. There is still quite a bit of uncertainty with
respect to the timing of the cold front...which will reek havoc
on the forecast and potential for developing thunderstorms.
Either way, there will likely be a broken line of convection
that does develop along the upper s/w that is progged to lift
newd across the region. There is also a hint of a weakly coupled
jet, which would further support broad large scale lift. If the
boundary layer can develop the 200-300 J/kg of CAPE...as seen
on the latest NAM...the combination of instability and very
strong dynamics...0-3km SRH gt 700 m2/s2...should lead to some
low-topped thunderstorms capable of producing very strong winds
and possibly even a few tornadoes as well. The limiting factor
will be the instability...if we cannot generate the CAPE...the
most likely scenario will be weakly forced convective cells that
get torn apart by the extreme shear.

The cold front will sweep east through the region during the
afternoon and behind the front winds will shift to the w/sw. The
gradient will still be strong which will allow winds will
remain sustained around 20 to 35 mph and gusts 45 to 60 mph at
times. The strongest winds will likely be found from the higher
terrain of Steuben County e/newd across the central/nrn Finger
Lakes into the wrn Mohawk Valley.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Period features a broad, flat trough over the Great Lakes and an
active storm track off the east coast. Upper flow over the area
is out of the southwest as we are under the east side of the
upper trough while the surface flow is more northwesterly. This
brings us some marginal instability and some clouds and the
outside chance of a light snow or rain showers. Tuesday will
start off windy but as the gradient relaxes the winds will
lighten.

Wave running up the storm track to the south may spread some
light precipitation over the southern zones Tuesday night into
Wednesday, and it would be cold enough overnight for snow and
even a light accumulation over the higher elevations in the
Poconos. System sags south during the day brining and end to the
precipitation.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...

200 PM UPDATE...

Long term will be relatively quiet with a westerly of mostly dry
air. Near the end of the period, an open upper wave and surface
low races east and bring some light precipitation. Made some
minor adjustments to the grids for the period in line with the
latest guidance but no major changes to the forecast.

330 AM update...

Tuesday should be dry but will be breezy and mostly cloudy. The
low  level flow is out of the west which should keep any weak
lake effect showers north of the area. At upper levels the winds
are from the southwest. Highs in the mid and upper 40s for most
which is back below average. Tuesday night a weak wave moves
northeast into the mid Atlantic brushing the southern tier and
NEPA with light rain and snow showers with lows around freezing.

For Wednesday into Thursday multiple weak cold fronts drop
southeast  across the area with a few more light rain and snow
showers. Temperatures are a few degrees colder. High pressure
moves in briefly Thursday night into Friday before a storm moves
east through the Ohio Valley and PA Friday afternoon and night.
Again a mix of rain and snow as it brings slightly warmer air
with it. Highs only in the mid and upper 40s.

Saturday should be warmer with highs around 50. More showers are
possible as a trough moves southeast in response to the Friday
storm intensifying off the coast as a nor'easter.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A middle cloud deck will continue through 00z all terminal sites
with rain arriving between 03z and 06z most terminals and 07z at
KRME. Ceilings will be lowering to just above MVFR with the rain
initially and then down to MVFR all terminals between 04z and
09z. We have RME and BGM down to IFR visibility between 12 and
15z. Expect MVFR rest of terminals thru 18z.

Bigger story is the potential for significant low-level wind
shear. We have high confidence of significant low-level wind
shear all terminals from around 06z to at least 15z as a very
sharp low-level inversion sets up with winds of 50-60 knots at
2000-3000 feet AGL. Surface winds will be south to southeast
10-20 knots gusting to 25-30 knots with winds at 2000 feet AGL
from the south at 50-60 knots.

Outlook... Monday afternoon ...MVFR and IFR restrictions likely
with occasional heavy rain showers and possible midday/aftn
thunderstorms. Strong Low level Wind Shear (LLWS) expected; at
least 50 kts.

Tuesday...Restrictions possible in rain and snow showers.

Wednesday and Thursday...Generally VFR.

Friday...Restrictions possible in rain and snow showers.

A strong Great Lakes storm system will have the potential to bring
strong winds to the southern tier of New York and northeast
Pennsylvania Monday. Southeast winds could gust between 40 and 50
mph Monday morning. The winds will shift to the southwest Monday
afternoon gusting up to 45 mph or so.

In addition, there is a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms
Monday afternoon. Any thunderstorm that forms could produce strong
damaging winds, and large hail.
