URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service La Crosse WI
658 PM CST Tue Dec 29 2020

...Accumulating Snow Continues For Parts of the Area...

.Accumulating snow continues for parts of eastern Iowa into
western Wisconsin. The dry air has worked into parts of southeast
Minnesota and northern Iowa, shutting down much of the
accumulating snow. The heavier snow and reduced visibilities of a
half mile or less are expected across far eastern Iowa and parts
of southeast Wisconsin through early evening.

The snow will continue to diminish from west to
east with the highest amounts across the warned area. Some
freezing drizzle is possible, so with the snow covered roads and
some patchy drizzle, the winter weather advisory remains in place.

What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS La Crosse, WI wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Dec 28, 11:05 AM CST, 3 hours 26 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 28, 11:05 AM CST, 3 hours 26 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service La Crosse WI
1105 AM CST Mon Dec 28 2020

.SHORT TERM...(This afternoon through Tuesday)
Issued at 1102 AM CST Mon Dec 28 2020

No changes are expected to the Advisories or Watches at mid-day.

Clouds continue to stream southeast today per GOES satellite
imagery with a sharp wind shift along an arctic front making its
way through MN. At 17Z the front was located along a DLH-ABR line
with colder air behind...mainly the single digits above zero.
There were also some flurries along the front in the
observations. Some pockets of light snow were also falling across
northwest WI and have added some scattered snow showers in the
forecast this afternoon north of highway 29 in WI.

The arctic front moves through in the early evening with some
flurries and clouds. While there are breaks across the
Dakotas...no confident these will completely clear the area
tonight. Might be kind of messy.

Timing still looks on track for a late afternoon arrival of snow
from southwest to northeast. By 7 pm, the entire local area should
be snowing with accumulations across northeast IA and southwest WI
affecting the commute /possibly 1-2"/ by early evening.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 409 AM CST Mon Dec 28 2020

Winter storm still on track to bring widespread several inches of
snow to the local area Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.
Latest trends among most deterministic and ensemble guidance
favors a slight southward shift in storm track and thus the axis
of heavier QPF. For now, this places northeast Iowa and southwest
Wisconsin in the crosshairs for the heaviest snow within our
forecast area, and confidence is high enough at this point to
hoist a Winter Storm Watch for potential of 6 to locally up to
8". Elsewhere, confidence at this time is high enough for at least
a few inches of snowfall (generally 4 to locally up to 6"), so in
coordination with western neighbors have hoisted a Winter Weather
Advisory for the rest of the forecast area. But will have to
closely monitor trends over the next 24 hours to see if this
southward shift continues, as the NAM and RAP still bring some heavier
QPF a bit further north. Continue to monitor the forecast for the
latest on this evolving storm system.

The snow will lift northeast into the area towards midday Tuesday,
likely spreading east of the Mississippi River by mid to late
afternoon and into central/north-central WI by early evening.
Guidance continues to show it falling heaviest Tuesday evening and
into the early morning hours on Wednesday. Can't rule out snow rates
of an inch or more per hour across northeast IA/southwest WI during
that timeframe with a nice conjunction of stronger lift and deep
saturation through the dendritic growth zone. By early Wednesday
morning the dry slot will begin to punch into the area from the
southwest, which will steadily eat away at our saturation from top
down through daybreak and bring an end to the accumulating snow.
Depending on how fast the moisture strips out from aloft, we could
end up with a period of light freezing drizzle as the snow tapers
off, which would be most likely across our southern counties. GEFS
and EPS members continue to support this possibility of light
freezing drizzle early Wednesday morning. Maybe a light glaze
possible in the watch area.

Expecting widespread impacts to travel across the region as this
storm pushes through, though the worst of it will be during the
nighttime hours. Nevertheless, some areas will have their Tuesday
evening commutes impacted and most will likely have a slow, very
slippery Wednesday morning commute. Snow ratios look to range from
around 9:1 in the south (leaning towards wetter/heavier type) to
near 12:1 in the north (not as wet/heavy) through this event.

Looking beyond, there's an increasing signal for a New Year's Day
snow event from a system lifting into the Great Lakes region. Old
man winter continues to deliver as of late, so once we get done
with this impending storm we'll have plenty more to talk about!

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1102 AM CST Mon Dec 28 2020

As an arctic front moves through the airfields during the early
evening, it appears MVFR or lower VFR ceilings could affect the
TAF sites for a period. Some light snow showers will probably
also be around but these should maintain VFR visibilities, or
very briefly cause 5SM. No accumulation is expected this evening.
These clouds are forecast to dissipate during the overnight.

IFR snow is expected at the TAF sites by later afternoon Tuesday
continuing into Wednesday morning.
