.A winter storm will impact the area from tonight through Sunday,
with a widespread 4 to 8 inches of snowfall expected and some
locally higher amounts possible. The highest snowfall totals look
to be along and north of the Interstate 90 corridor, with the 
heaviest falling Sunday morning. In addition, some light icing is
possible across parts of northeast Iowa and far southwest 
Wisconsin.

...Heavy Snow Will Lead to Dangerous Travel Today...

.A winter storm will bring heavy snow to the area with a
band of 8 to 11 inches along and north of Interstate 90. Locally 
higher amounts possible. In addition, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 
inches per hour are likely in these areas. To the north and south 
of the heavy band, totals will generally be in the 3 to 6 inch 
range, with the possibility of some light icing in northeast Iowa 
and far southwest Wisconsin as the snow comes to an end this 
afternoon.

Travel will quickly become difficult as snow moves in and will 
become dangerous in areas receiving the heaviest snow. Some roads

.Heavy snow is falling across much of the area this morning, with

Issued at 242 PM CST Fri Feb 7 2020

GOES water vapor/RAP 500mb analysis this afternoon showing a large
long wave upper trough carved out across most of the CONUS.
Meanwhile, a weak embedded short wave trough was progressing
southeast across IA. This wave and lingering cyclonic flow aloft was
producing scattered to broken sky cover along with scattered snow
flurries across our area. Otherwise, as of 1 pm, temperatures across
the forecast area were in the 20s/lower 30s.

Plan on lingering clouds/scattered flurries to continue tonight as
the mid-level trough works through the area. Overnight lows are
expected to bottom out in the single digits to teens above zero.

High pressure builds in Saturday for increasingly sunny skies but
highs will be a bit on the chilly side with readings only topping
off in the teens and 20s.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)
Issued at 242 PM CST Fri Feb 7 2020

From late Saturday night into Sunday morning, strong frontogenetic
forcing and warm air advection will develop ahead of a fairly
vigorous short wave trough. In addition, there are signals for the
potential of slantwise convection between 09z and 15z Sunday in
southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa and from 12z to 18z in
west-central and central Wisconsin. The 7.09z SREF is showing
anywhere from a 50-70 percent probability for 1-2 inch hourly snow
rates along and north of the Minnesota/Iowa border and from Vernon
County north in western Wisconsin. This will result in a narrow (3
to 4 county wide) convective snow band, but location is still
uncertain. The NAM has its band north of Interstate 90. The GFS
has it south of Interstate 90. Meanwhile, the ECMWF is between
these two.

Most of the models have QPF ranging from 0.3 to 0.6 inches. With
many of the soundings suggesting up to 100 mb within the dendritic
growth zone, this suggests that snow to liquid ratios will range
from 10-15 to 1. This will result in snow totals ranging between 3
and 8 inches. There could be some localized totals maybe up to 10
inches. The highest totals at this time look to be near the
Interstate 90 corridor.

As the system begins to move out of the area, there could be a
brief period of freezing drizzle. If it does, the impacts look to
be minimal with maybe a light glaze.

A tight pressure gradient in the wake of this system will produce
northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with some gusts to 30 mph in
northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin. This may result in some
blowing and drifting snow.

MVFR to VFR conditions are expected tonight in stratus. A few
flurries can also be expected at times. Surface high pressure
moves over the region during the day on Sunday with the stratus
scattering out and clearing with VFR conditions expected. Clouds
then move back into the region Saturday night as a fast moving low
pressure system moves in. Snow will then overspread the TAF sites
late Saturday night into Sunday morning with IFR to LIFR
conditions likely.
