Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service La Crosse WI 1102 PM CST Tue Feb 11 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Thursday) Issued at 152 PM CST Tue Feb 11 2020 Surface ridge and increasing subsidence aloft was rapidly scouring out the western edge of stratocu over western Wisconsin early this afternoon. Will see mostly clear skies across much of the forecast area heading into this evening, though clouds may linger over portions of north-central Wisconsin. West-southwest winds will diminish slightly this evening, which will promote efficient radiational cooling where skies are clear. Warm air advection aloft will ramp up later tonight as a low level jet develops over the region. Lows will generally be in the teens. Focus then turns to an incoming Arctic front and interaction with southern stream low pressure Wednesday/Wednesday night. This front looks to have some fairly vigorous snow showers tied to it with the likelihood for 1/2 to 2 inches of fluffy accumulation from mainly late afternoon into Wednesday night. Intensification of that southern stream storm with influx of Arctic air will produce a strong pressure gradient for gusty northwest winds in addition to the plummeting temperatures by later Wednesday night. Will likely see multiple hazards with this scenario: 1. Snow showers with accumulation and reduced visibilities. 2. Increasing winds gusting in the 25 to 35 mph range which could blow some of that lighter/fluffy snow around with some significant reductions in visibility/difficult travel conditions at times. 3. Very cold wind chills of 15 to 30 below later Wednesday night into Thursday morning. With this in mind, will likely need at least a Winter Weather Advisory for a good portion of the area Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Will let the mid crew tonight assess further and issue any needed headlines. In the meantime, will beef up hazard potential in our Hazardous Weather Outlook, Graphics, and other venues. .LONG TERM...(Thursday Night through Tuesday) Issued at 152 PM CST Tue Feb 11 2020 Arctic high pressure/bitter cold airmass builds overhead Thursday night/early Friday morning. Plan on lows in the teens below zero with wind chills in the teens to 30 below. Daytime high Friday will struggle into the teens above zero despite plenty of sunshine. Moderating temperatures take place for the weekend as mid-level heights rebound over the central CONUS. Will have to watch for a chance of light snow Saturday though as models show a trough of low pressure passing through the region. A ridge of high pressure rebuilds into the region Sunday for quiet weather. Look for highs Saturday and Sunday in the 30s with lows Saturday night generally in the teens. Monday into Tuesday bears watching as both the GFS/ECMWF have a fairly vigorous low pressure system passing through the region. There will be the potential for mixed precipitation with this system. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night) Issued at 1101 PM CST Tue Feb 11 2020 An arctic cold front entering into North Dakota late this evening will drop rapidly southeast and pass through both airports by late Wednesday afternoon. The low level jet ahead of the front will cause low level wind shear for both sites through about mid- morning Wednesday. Low clouds with MVFR ceilings are expected to precede the front by a couple of hours and these should spread over both sites by mid-afternoon. A band of light snow along and behind the front will produce a couple hours of visibility reductions before this ends. However, the winds will swing around to the north/northwest behind the front and become quite gusty. Gusts will be in the 20 to 25 knot range for all of Wednesday evening and this will be enough to continue the visibility reductions with blowing snow at KRST. Snow amounts will generally range from 1 to 2 inches, with highest amounts expected across southwest into central Wisconsin. Gusty northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusting to 35 mph behind the front are expected to produce areas of blowing snow, mainly across the open and windprone areas of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. Travel will likely be impacted, especially for the late afternoon and evening commute. Wind chill values of 10 to 30 below zero are then expected at times from Wednesday night through Friday morning.
