Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service La Crosse WI 636 AM CDT Sun Mar 29 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 300 AM CDT Sun Mar 29 2020 Early morning analysis showed the wrapped up low responsible for our storms yesterday spinning along the Minnesota/Iowa border with spotty showers continuing in the deformation band from southern Minnesota northeastward toward Lake Superior. Plenty of isentropic lift and 500 mb PV advection will remain in place on the back side of the system, along with a tiny bit of instability, to produce continued shower chances today as the low pushes off to the east across Wisconsin. Trend has been toward a little bit slower progression of the low, which will keep precip lingering in the forecast area into the early evening hours. In addition to the rain, the system will be bringing gusty northwest winds through today. A tight pressure gradient will be in place with RAP model soundings suggesting 40+ kt winds at the top of the mixed layer. With rain and clouds in place, think models could be overdoing mixing a bit, but still looking like 30-40 mph gusts will be possible across much of the area. Can't completely rule out some Wind Advisory level (45+ mph) gusts, but with 30-40 mph being on the higher end of guidance and the aforementioned hindrance to mixing, would think those advisory-level speeds would be somewhat spotty. Latest short term guidance suggests precip will exit to the east by midnight with clouds not far behind. This should provide at least a few hours of decent radiational cooling, as winds will be on the decrease as well. Expect a cooler night compared to the past several days, with lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 300 AM CDT Sun Mar 29 2020 It appears a quiet period with some rain chances. Monday and Tuesday appear to be sunny days under influence of seasonally-common Hudson Bay high. This flow is typically quite dry and stops weakly forced systems dead in their tracks. While some of the model solutions bring precipitation in on Wednesday, if the forcing is weak, would think a stronger moisture surge will be needed and precipitation will be delayed. Latest 29.00Z ECMWF is much more robust with ridging in place Wednesday, downstream of NWRN CONUS troughing. Have decreased model blend/consensus precipitation chances in the eastern forecast area based on collaboration with neighbors Wed/Wed night. Some rain chances exist late week as the NWRN CONUS trough grazes the area with some lift before weekend drying. Rainfall to the northwest during the week will mean more routed water coming for the Miss River, but otherwise a tributary && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Monday morning) Issued at 636 AM CDT Sun Mar 29 2020 MVFR/IFR ceilings to gradually improve to MVFR through the day, though rain showers will continue to pass through. Visibility will generally remain MVFR, but could see brief drops to IFR in heavier showers along with increases to VFR in between showers. Northwest winds will gust in the 25 to 35 kt range through the day. Precipitation should exit to the east by this evening and winds will subside, with VFR conditions and a gradual clearing of skies expected into Monday morning. Depending how fast clouds clear out, fog could form in parts of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa by early Monday morning, but trends have been slightly slower with the clearing, so have not included any fog mention at RST at this time. && .HYDROLOGY...
