Lull before the storm so to speak.

Per morning surface analysis, boundary has slid through most of
Lower Michigan at this juncture...now stretched NE-SW through the
Detroit area...placing us back into the shallow colder air. As
anticipated, low cloud cover has expanded back through the region
behind the boundary putting us back into cloudy/dreary conditions.

Upstream, strong southern stream wave has opened and is now
progressing through the central/southern Plains. Deepening surface
low is over the Kansas/Missouri border as of 15Z with an inverted
surface trough/aforementioned surface boundary stretching
northeastward into the lower lakes/SE Lower Michigan. Strong
moisture transport is already underway out of the Gulf ahead of
the low/upper wave northward through the Mississippi River Valley
with precip expanding northeastward along the boundary/thermal
gradient into the lower Lakes region.

Relatively quiet conditions anticipated for the rest of the
daylight hours with perhaps a little light snow/flurries
spreading into the southern two tiers of counties. That said,
forecast soundings show a wedge of dry air between roughly 3 and
7K feet across that area through the afternoon...suggesting we may
not see much. Either way...cloudy skies steady temperatures will
be the rule through the afternoon.

Meanwhile, stage appears set for a fairly substantial snow event
starting tonight and persisting through the day Saturday. Most
model guidance solutions have remained steadfast over the last day
or two, tracking the surface system up through southern/SE Lower
Michigan on Saturday and placing central and northern Lower
Michigan pretty much in the sweet spot for a swath of heavy
QPF...on the order of 0.75 to 1.25 inches through early Sunday.
Most of that will fall as snow, although I am a bit concerned
about "warmer" surface temperatures and reduced snow to liquid
ratios during the heaviest precip on Saturday, especially across
our SE counties near the Huron coast. Thus, highest snow
accumulations may set up across the higher terrain areas of
northern Lower. Either way, confidence continues to increase for a
fairly substantial wet/heavy snow event across much of northern
Lower Michigan through Saturday/Saturday evening. Will more than
likely be hoisting a combination of winter storm warnings and
winter weather advisories with the 4 pm forecast.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Minimal. Rain and snow starting tonight.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Upper troughing and an area of low pressure was out in the central
and srn Plains early this morning, resulting in light rain and snow.
More showers extended south through OK/TX. Broad/minor ridging and
sfc high pressure were over the eastern states, with drier air
leading to much clearer skies. Here in nrn Michigan, a moisture-
starved cold front was crossing the region, and developing northerly
winds were feeding some colder air and low level clouds into nrn
Michigan. There was some fog out there as well, but nothing too
widespread or thick. An overall fairly quiet early morning.

The current cold front will drop south of us through daybreak, with
many areas stuck under dreary lows clouds, while higher level clouds
increase out ahead of the approaching low pressure. Clouds really
start to thicken up through tonight, as the upstream low pressure
strengthens, and spreads deeper moisture and forcing into nrn
Michigan. DPVA and theta-e advection/convergence increase, as does
left exit region upper level divergence on the nose of 110+kt jet
pushing into the Ohio valley. Maybe some FGEN sneaks into the srn
CWA. This will result in the development of rain and snow, lifting
from south to north, for primarily nrn lower Michigan (all snow in
the higher terrain) Only some light snowfall amounts are anticipated
in areas south of M-32, to around inch, and again, mainly in the
interior higher terrain. The action really starts getting cranked up
Saturday, with the strongest portion of this storm arriving then
(see more on that below).

High temperatures will mostly be in the upper half of the 30s and
some lower 40s. Lows tonight will largely range through the
20s.

.SHORT TERM...(Saturday through Sunday)

...Accumulating Snow Spreading North and West...

High impact weather: Accumulating snow; some blowing snow possible.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Track, precipitation type and
snowfall amounts.

11/00z nam and gfs guidance have both shifted the track farther
north, with a track squarely across the Thumb. In addition, the
surface low is deeper at about 995 mb. Qpf seems a bit overdone but
upwards of an inch or slightly more of liquid equivalent is
generated. This is expected to be overly aggressive but it does show
the potential for higher qpf amounts which may produce greater
snowfall totals. This track would also keep southeast zones as
mostly rain or a mix of rain and snow limiting snowfall
accumulations down that way. On the contrary, the ECMWF and the
Canadian are holding strong with their 10/12z run ideas of a
somewhat weaker surface low while keeping the track farther south
and east. All and all this forecast has high bust potential,
especially on the northwest and southeast peripheries with a large
variance in snowfall amounts possible. Will not deviate much from
WPC qpf guidance which ranges from an inch plus across southeast
zones to three-quarters of an inch central to little to nothing
northwest (across far western Mackinac and Chippewa counties).

As far as the details go, expect snow to continue to spread
northwest through mid morning Saturday likely becoming heavy at
times across interior areas while lighter snow falls across far
northwest lower while a mix of rain and snow falls across the far
southeast. Total snow accumulations could change but have upwards of
6 to 9 inches encompassing a swath extending from Alpena to Mio to
Cadillac northwest to Traverse City and Gaylord with 3 to 5 inches
across far northwest lower and southeast zones. Right now only 1 to
3 inches of snow accumulation is forecast across eastern upper
(perhaps with little to no accumulation across far western Chippewa
and Mackinac counties). These totals are derived from a blend of the
models and in most areas except for across southeast zones would be
underdone if the 11/00z NAM/GFS verify. Precipitation should begin
to tapper off from southwest to northeast late Saturday evening then
end overnight. Winds will be gusty into Saturday evening with some
blowing and drifting snow around but the wet character of the snow
should limit this from becoming widespread. Lingering clouds and
perhaps some flurries Sunday but overall much quieter condtions are
expected.

...Uneventful Weather for the Most Part...

High impact weather: None is expected.

Unfortunately extended models vary on the details of the expected
split flow aloft pattern next week. Mainly weak short wave energy in
combination with over lake instability may lead to a few chances for
snow showers through the week. Will have chance pops Sunday night
into Monday morning for now across northern and western zones. Kind
of random as to when other chance pop periods might be and later
shifts will hopefully be able to define the details a bit better.
Forecast temperatures will be slightly below climatological
averages.

Solid MVFR CIGS will persist across northern Lower Michigan this
afternoon into tonight. Strong storm system will then slide up
through the region later tonight through Saturday and bring a
swath of heavier snowfall up through the region. Confidence is
high that conditions will deteriorate to IFR CIGS/VSBYS at all
terminal sites later tonight and Saturday morning (see individual
TAF forecasts for timing).

Gustier north to northeasterly winds also develop tonight and
Saturday with gusts running 20 to 30 knots at the terminal sites.

A weak moisture-starved cold front will cross nrn Michigan through
daybreak, allowing cooler air to fill into the region via gusty
advisory level winds for many nearshore waters. Deepening low
pressure then approaches late tonight, with light rain breaking out
over Lakes Michigan and Huron. Rain and snow really pick up Saturday
and Saturday evening with portions of Lakes Michigan and Huron
seeing gale force NE winds, as this storm system tracks through
lower Michigan.
