High Impact Weather Potential: Periods of showers today into
tonight. Keeping an eye on rainfall totals although excessive
rainfall is not anticipated at this time.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Larger scale trough amplification now
well underway through the central CONUS early this morning, driven
by a strong 1.5 PV anomaly intrusion through the Midwest and
central Plains and secondary 1.5 PV anomaly diving southward out
of Manitoba into the northern Plains. Deepening trough is bounded
by strengthening upper level ridging along both coasts. Strong
upper level jet segments round the trough from the southern Plains
NNE up across the Great Lakes. Pockets of strong upper level jet
divergence...height falls and associated f-gen processes along the
eastern flank of the trough continue to drive advertised
pivoting line of expanding showers from Arkansas into Lower
Michigan.
At the surface, organizing surface wave stretches from southern
Lake Huron to the lower Ohio Valley along advancing cold front,
with bulk of the rainfall post-frontal. Second surface low is near
James Bay with it's associated cold and demarcation to
substantially cooler air stretching down through the Upper
Midwest.
Large scale upper trough will continue to deepen/amplify over the
western Great Lakes over the next 24 hours with the upper level
low closing off across the U.P. Surface low pressure follows suit,
quickly deepening and lifting northward across Lake Huron into
eastern Ontario by Tuesday morning.
Primary Forecast Concerns: Will need to monitor rainfall amounts
through tonight.
Details: Looking pretty straight forward at this point. Deepening
trough and associated axis of upper level jet and f-gen forcing
will continue to pivot into Lower Michigan and southward into the
Ohio River Valley. Expanding axis of widespread rainfall looking
to take aim squarely at Lower Michigan and into eastern Upper
Michigan today before continuing to pivot east and northward
through the CWA tonight in a classic comma head cyclone
configuration. Longest rainfall duration and highest rainfall
amounts with this system are lining up to take aim at this CWA
through tonight with a high probability of a good half to one
inch of rain for much of the CWA and some lower end probabilities
of exceeding one inch especially across northeast Lower Michigan.
That is safely below flash flood guidance numbers, but again we
will have to keep an eye on accumulated rainfall as the event
unfolds.
Thunder potential still appears very low although interestingly,
some higher resolution modeling solutions depict a narrow corridor
of MUCAPE pivoting through Lake Michigan today into tonight, along
with some low thunder probabilities across Lake Michigan. Will
continue to keep thunder out of the forecast, but wouldn't be to
shocked to see some lightning across Lake Michigan with this
system, potentially reaching the Lower Michigan coastline.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: Pops through the period.
Periodic pockets of upper level energy rotating through a long wave
trough parked across the Great Lakes in combination with marginal
over lake instability is expected to lead to abundant cloud cover as
well as additional rain showers across the region. In addition,
models continue to generate some daytime heating driven instability
Wednesday afternoon with a couple hundred J/Kg of cape so can not
rule out a rumble or two of thunder. Temperatures will be cooler
than what we have seen recently with highs in the mid 50s to low 60s
(which is a few degrees below what you would normally expect for
late September). Lows in the low and mid 40s.

High impact weather potential: Minimal.
The extended forecast remains unsettled and chilly with the upper
level trough remaining in place across eastern Canada into the Great
Lakes through the period. The trough is actually shown to amplify
late in the week sending a chunk of much colder air down from Canada
with 850 mb temperatures perhaps falling off to as low as -7 C so
cannot totally rule out a few wet snowflakes mixing in with the rain
showers across interior eastern upper at some point (perhaps late
Thursday night or Friday morning). Otherwise, expect more lake
effect rain showers at times with well below temperatures. Wind
directions will be shifting around as disturbances more through the
flow so lake enhancement areas will likely be changing. Another
factor is a possible low pressure system moving by to our south
later next weekend. Temperatures will be well below normal through
the period with lots of spots struggling to get out of the 40s for
highs. Looking farther out, I do expect milder air to begin working
its way back into the region just beyond the scope of this forecast.

southward into the Great Lakes region overnight and Monday. Deep
moisture will surge northward along and ahead of the associated
cold front...which currently extends from the low thru Lower
Michigan and into the Mid Mississippi Valley and the Southern
Plains. Narrow line of showers just behind the cold front
will expand over the next 24 hours. Widespread showers will
develop across all of Northern Lower Michigan by Monday morning
and will continue to impact all of our TAF sites thru Monday
night. VFR conditions will deteriorate to MVFR and possibly
IFR...with the worst conditions expected across NE Lower Michigan
(APN) on Monday. Mainly light/variable winds overnight into
Monday morning will become northerly at 10 to 15 kts by Monday
