...Relatively quiet...

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal. Some light lake effect snow
nw lower and eastern upper MI.

Chilly high pressure sprawls across the central and northern plains.
The incoming airmass remains very dry, especially at low levels. N
to nnw low-level flow continues to produce lake-induced clouds and
flurries in nw lower MI, where the effective Superior/Michigan fetch
is longest. The shorter fetch into ne lower MI isn't producing any
clouds at all over land, though a streamer does begin offshore of
Thunder Bay. The above is resulting in some massive temperature
spreads early this morning, with a number of places east of I-75
in single digits below zero, while the nw lower MI coastline is in
the low-mid 20s.

The high will move steadily se, toward the mid MS Valley. The 850mb
thermal trof ahead of the high is overhead, with -14/-15C air at
850mb. We will gradually warm on nw-erly flow thru the forecast,
gaining about 2C today and another 3-4C tonight. This is with
winds slowly backing, to nw today and wnw tonight. Light lake
effect snow showers will migrate gradually eastward into parts of
n central lower MI, and will also push back into parts of eastern
upper MI (noting that there is already a stray streamer over CIU).
This should all be on the light side; perhaps some land-breeze-
forced convergence can squeeze out a half-inch of snow this
morning near MBL. There is also some mid-level moisture grazing
that area this morning, associated with a vigorous but moisture-
starved shortwave digging to our west.

Lake effect snow will gradually diminish thru today and this
evening, thanks for warming 850mb temps and lowering inversion
heights. There may be some potential for that transition to include
some freezing drizzle; we don't normally see that historically, but
we've managed it a few times this winter. Our near-surface temps
look to be a little too cold for that. For now will not
explicitly include in the forecast, though the best chance for it
will be this afternoon/evening as we get just a little warmer.

Cloud cover today will mostly reflect current trends, with
considerably more clouds west of I-75 than east, in both peninsulas.
Some possibility for decreasing clouds late today near TVC/MBL, as
better stratocu lifts toward CVX/GLR. Cloud cover will decrease
somewhat tonight, with partly cloudy to mostly clear skies across
the area.

Max temps today mainly in the mid 20s. Min temps low-mid teens, but
some locally colder readings can certainly be expected.

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow Wednesday late
morning into Wed night. Advisory-level accums are possible,
especially north of M-32.

A shortwave will move ene-ward across northern MI Wed evening. An
associated surface low will move from northern MO to central Lake
Erie on Wed, then deepen substantially while continuing ene. Though
the surface cyclone is well to our south, the better height falls
and mid-level fgen forcing are here. So we are well positioned to
pick up some synoptic snow Wed and Wed night. Breezy to windy winds
Wed night into Thu will bring colder air into the region. Associated
chances for lake effect snow will eventually be hampered by the
increasingly dry incoming air.

Wed-Wed night...low-level moist layer is progged to become shallower
tonight. Inversion heights will be down near 2-3k ft by morning,
which should make it difficult to generate drizzle/flurry activity.
Initial warm-advection wing of enhanced mid-level moisture builds
over nw lower MI in the morning, but there is an intervening dry
layer below (centered on 3-5k ft). Maybe a stray flurry or bit of
light snow can get thru at the start of the morning. Those chances
increase as this wing shifts north and warm advection continues to
increase. Mid-level (700-50mb) fgen forcing also increases. Expect
some snow to develop late morning/midday over eastern upper,
especially west of I-75. This will continue to expand/intensity,
with light snow likely across of northern MI late in the afternoon.
Widespread snow will depart to the east during the evening, though
lake effect snow showers will be common in brisk nw flow behind the
system overnight.

Nam continues to focus a possible e-w oriented fgen band of enhanced
QPF. The 12Z run has a band of just greater than 0.25" QPF between M-
28 and Moran/Allenville. This is a bit north of where it was progged
at this time yesterday. Most of the other guidance has smudgier,
smoother QPF output. The idea of an embedded, heavier band is
reasonable, and with snow-liquid ratios in the mid to upper teens,
advisory-level accums would occur with this band. However, pinning
that band down to a precise location is probably still premature.
Will continue to take a slightly conservative approach, with 3-4"
progged in much of eastern upper MI, as well as just across the
bridge into the tip of northern lower MI (as well as on Beaver Isl).

Lake effect will replace synoptic snow Wed night, with some 1-3"
accums in snowbelt regions thru morning. Substantial drying, in
advance of large and strong high pressure that reaches the upper MS
Valley late on Thursday, will diminish lake effect snowfall with
time on Thursday. Windy conditions will kick in by midnight Wed
night, thanks to the deepening low to our east. That will last thru
Thursday, providing a little extra chill to what will already be a
raw day.

Max temps Wed near 30f to the lower 30s. Low temps by morning in the
mid teens to lower 20s. Max temps will not recover much Thu, in the
upper teens to upper 20s.

Relatively quiet for Thu night and Friday. 1045mb high pressure will
ooze around Lake Superior early Friday. And 500mb ridging is getting
pumped up, ahead of troffing advancing into the central/northern
Rockies. Any breaks in cloud cover Thu night would potentially
result in sub-zero min temps. For now though, will keep temps near
zero in much of eastern upper, and in the single digits to lower
teens above zero in northern lower. Warm advection clouds will start
to increase on Friday, and the surface high heads east. Any precip
should wait until Fri night. Max temps upper teens to mid 20s.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Sunday)

500mb troffing will eject from the central high plains toward the
Great Lakes. This is likely to phase/interact with northern stream
energy digging into s central Canada, carving out an upper lower
near or north of Superior by mid-weekend. The associated surface low
will deepen considerably on Saturday as it cross lower MI,
eventually heading toward New England. Another strong, cold high
pressure area will build se-ward from central Canada in the wake of
this system.

Snow should develop Fri night, and could be heavy at times late Fri
night into Saturday. This system will trail off into lake effect Sat
night and beyond. Heavy snowfall is a distinct possibility, along
with windy conditions both ahead of and (especially) behind the
surface low. Still appears as though any chance for mixed precip
will likely stay to our south. Will continue to gradually amp up
wording of this system in the HWO.

Extended period of cold wx appears likely behind the system, with
chilly northerly flow for Sunday-Monday-Tuesday. Temps look to go
solidly below climo for a while.
