.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Impactful weather: More showers and thunderstorms. Some storms may
be severe in portions of nrn lower Michigan, along and south of a
line from GTV Bay to Harrisville. Damaging winds, and large hail to
la lesser extent are the threats, but an isolated tornado is not out
of the question.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

WNW flow aloft and some weak shortwave/vorticity was tracking north
of a stationary frontal boundary draped from the IA/MN border,
through far srn WI and far srn lower early this morning. 800-1300
j/kg of MUCAPE was in this region, with weak DPVA and upper
divergence working in tandem with a weak 10-20kt SW LLJ with theta-e
convergence, to result in scattered showers and thunderstorm
activity along and north of the front. These showers were just south
of MBL/Cadillac, with some convective cloud debris encroaching from
the west. Otherwise, skies were clear with some patchy fog along and
north of M-32, including eastern upper. A more defined shortwave was
seen working across the south central provinces of Canada, with much
colder low level air in it's wake.

The weak vorticity will work into nrn lower Michigan this morning,
followed by a stronger wave seen for this afternoon and this
evening. This will allow for an area of low pressure to track
eastward from the Plains early this morning, through nrn Michigan
tonight. The stationary front will lift north as a warm front today
into this evening, with the warm sector to get shunted into areas
generally along and south of M-72. We should see some lighter
showers and at least a few thunderstorms drift across the GTV Bay
region, and all areas along and south of M-32 this morning, before
coverage becomes more widespread this afternoon and at least this
evening, with the arrival of a stronger wave. This will bring in a
stronger LLJ with better theta-e convergence, increased DPVA and a
pocket of increased upper divergence. MLCAPES of several hundred to
1300 j/kg are expected this afternoon into the evening, while
effective shear rises to 40-45kts. Along and just south of the warm
front in the warm sector where storms can be rooted in the BL, 0-3km
helicities increase to 250-400 m2/s2, resulting in an isolated
tornado threat. Not so sure how much of that instability can result
in tapping the stronger winds aloft for the damaging wind threat,
but that will be seen by how much warming we can get through the day
south of the warm front (this warming will also determine if we can
realize more instability to provide that chance at large hail).
Skies ought to be rather cloudy north of the front, and with showers
and storms moving in, we could have quite the thermal gradient,
differential heating boundary set up. The best chance at convection
will be here this afternoon and evening. Then, the more defined
shortwave from the south central provinces of Canada arrives late
tonight, providing continued chances at seeing shower activity. No
thunder expected overnight, as the instability will have departed
with the strongest forcing.

Highs today may prove tough due to uncertainties in how much warming
can be garnered in the warm sector today. Readings will be in the
lower half of the 70s north of the front in the nrn CWA, to the mid
and upper 70s, with the potential to rise into the 80s along and
south of M-72 in nrn lower. Lows tonight will range from the middle
50s in eastern upper, to the upper 50s and lower 60s in nrn lower.

.SHORT TERM...(Saturday through Sunday)

High impact weather potential: Minimal.

Pattern synopsis/forecast: By Saturday morning, closed upper level
low pressure is expected to be situated across Ontario with several
surface features of note. The first is the area of low pressure
bringing inclement weather to the area today, which is expected to
have shifted off toward the eastern Great Lakes by Saturday morning.
The second, and more noteworthy player in this weekend's weather
will be stacked underneath aforementioned upper-level troughing
across Ontario. While the initial low will have likely swung a
cold front across the forecast area by early Saturday morning, a
secondary front tied to our north is expected to drop north to
south across the forecast area during the day Saturday -
ultimately aiding to bring in cooler temperatures this weekend,
along with the potential for lake induced clouds and light rain
showers across portions of northern Michigan.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: PoPs downwind of Lake Michigan
and Superior, and temperature trends.

Focus through the day Saturday revolves around closed upper-level
pressure and attendant vertically stacked ~998mb surface low aiding
to drive a secondary cold front from north to south across northern
Michigan from Saturday morning north through the afternoon hours
south. This clearly evident as H8 temps are expected to fall from
roughly 9-10 C early in the day to 5-7 C by early-mid afternoon,
especially across far northwest lower and eastern upper. While
synoptic moisture with this system should largely remain to our
north, expecting to see some lake induced cloud cover and perhaps a
few showers, most numerously across eastern upper and NW lower,
especially when increasing over-lake instability is combined with
maximum synoptic support during the afternoon hours. Also, simply
given the pattern, incoming cool air aloft and near-surface
instability, can't rule out the chance for waterspouts across the
northern lakes as well. High temps Saturday expected to range from a
few degrees below normal to near-normal for most...in the upper 60s
to low 70s area-wide - only to made feel a little blustery at times
with breezy northwest winds gusting as high as 20-25 mph.

A seasonably cool night expected Saturday night with lows falling
into the 40s across inland areas (50s nearest the big lakes) as a
result of continued cold air advection. While most locations will
likely find themselves under mainly clear skies, the low chance
remains across portions of northwest lower/eastern upper for a few
lake induced showers to dot the map at times. Any of this activity
will remain quite isolated and certainly not amount to much in the
way of QPF before these chances gradually wane heading into Sunday
as upstream surface high pressure settles squarely overhead. This
should ultimately bring a much weaker pressure gradient and slowly
moderating mid-level temperatures. Not much response from the
surface however, as highs struggle to reach 70 degrees for many (low
far south).

High impact weather potential: Minimal for now.

Longwave troughing is expected to exit the Great Lakes region early
next week making room for incoming mid-upper level ridging. This
looks to mute precip chances initially; however, focus transitions
to the Tuesday time frame as guidance trends suggest another
impressive shortwave treks from the Pacific Northwest across the
northern plains early next week. While confidence isn't overly high
in its progression as energy approaches the Great Lakes from the
west, it'll be hard to not include shower/storm chances Monday night
onward through midweek. Expect plenty of refinement to this time
frame over the coming days as details become more clear.

A stationary frontal boundary will lift north as a warm front, and
into nrn lower Michigan Friday, as an area of low pressure crosses
nrn Michigan Friday night. Skies will increase in cloudy through
Friday, with CIGS lowering to IFR/MVFR across TVC/MBL Friday
morning, and at PLN later Friday, and not at APN until later Friday
night. Showers and a some thunderstorms will also develop through
Friday, and continue through at least Friday evening. There is a
chance at a few severe storms around TVC/MBL late this afternoon and
evening, with damaging winds and large hail being the main threats,
but an isolated tornado is not out of the question. VSBYS could
certainly be IFR/MVFR in the heavier showers.

Light easterly flow will increase out of the SE, then more southerly
into tonight. Winds turn more W/NW later tonight behind the passing
low pressure.

nrn Michigan tonight. Showers and thunderstorms will spread across
the region over this time, and a few storms may be severe late this
afternoon and evening, for the southern nearshore waters of Lakes
Michigan and Huron, generally south of Northport and Harrisville.
Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats, but an isolated
waterspout is not out of the question. A tight pressure gradient
develops out ahead of the low pressure and remains through much of
Saturday, while cold advection leads to deepening overlake
instability. Advisory level winds are expected in easterly flow
today and this evening, and then again Saturday into Saturday night
as winds turn out of the NW behind the passing low pressure.
