.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Impactful weather: Minimal today with chances for drizzle this
morning with a slowly passing cold front. Then, the threat increases
tonight for accumulating wet snow tonight and ice due to freezing
rain.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

The upper air pattern is fairly amplified early this morning, with
large scale troughing from central Canada down into Mexico, and
ridging on both coasts. At the sfc, there were two high pressures
over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and two low pressures, one
lifting NE through Ontario, and another developing into west Texas.
These two sfc lows were connected by a slowly eastward advancing
cold front. A corridor of deep moisture was seen out ahead of this
front, fed by a strong 50+kt LLJ. WAA and some decent upper jet
divergence were resulting in showers and thunderstorms stretching
from Arkansas through the eastern Great Lakes. The mixed bag of
precipitation that was in nrn Michigan continues to depart NE, with
the deeper moisture being stripped out aloft, and the dominant
precipitation type turning more into drizzle with time.

The sfc low pressure in Ontario will make it into Quebec by tonight,
and will continue to strip out deeper and more deeper moisture. Fcst
soundings show that drizzle will become harder and harder to come by
through the day, as the system/aforementioned cold front slowly
crosses nrn Michigan. Then, the real weather starts to arrive. A
positively-tilted nrn stream shortwave will skirt srn Canada through
tonight, with strong high pressure crossing the Dakotas/MN and
Ontario. A stronger srn stream and negatively-tilted wave then works
into Central/Southern Plains, with an associated sfc low pressing
into the lower/mid Mississippi valley. This system will be working
with an increasing Gulf of Mexico moisture tap, as another round of
deep theta-e advection streams from the gulf coast all the way into
lower Michigan, via a very strong 70-75kt LLJ. Atmospheric jet
dynamics are very very impressive heading through tonight, with
upper divergence strengthening with time, via a nice double jet
structure, again stretching from the Gulf through lower Michigan and
the eastern Great Lakes. When coupled with the development of an
also impressive frontogenetical forcing corridor developing
overnight, significant snow, sleet and freezing rain are all
possible across nrn lower Michigan, and in particular, from roughly
Cadillac through Houghton Lake and Oscoda. This is a further north
track than in previous forecasts, and starting earlier than the
current Winter Storm Watch. Gonna have to start it more late this
evening, a full 12 hours earlier, something like 10 pm. Man there
are some uncertainties with this event, especially where the lines
are drawn for each different precip type.

High temperatures will range from the mid 30s in eastern upper, to
the lower 40s closer to Saginaw Bay. Lows tonight will range from
the mid teens in eastern upper, to the mid and upper 20s south of M-
72 in nrn lower.

High Impact Weather Potential: High

...Significant winter storm will bring heavy snowfall, wintry mix,
and gusty winds to northern Michigan Saturday into Sunday morning...

A strong, complex system is set to have significant impacts across
the state Saturday into Sunday morning. While this discussion is
lengthy, it is intentionally so in order to adequately discuss the
details of the potential hazards associated with this system.

Synopsis:

Amplified troughing will move into the ArklaTex region by
Saturday morning as upper-level ridging departs off of the east
coast. At the surface, high pressure will continue to build from the
US/Canada border into James Bay, funneling cold air along its
eastern periphery southward into the Great Lakes. A quasi-stationary
front is expected to be draped diagonally across far SE Michigan
down into the Mississippi Valley Saturday morning.

The main focus of the forecast period is going to be a cyclone
deepening along this boundary underneath strong ascent provided by a
very impressive shortwave set to materialize by Saturday afternoon.
This shortwave will quickly progress into the Great Lakes by
Saturday night. The cyclone will make its way into the Great Lakes
Saturday evening before departing Sunday morning.

Forecast/Details:

Saturday morning and afternoon: Precipitation is expected to be
ongoing across the southern half of the forecast area, mainly south
of M-32 and heaviest closest to our southern forecast border. Strong
frontogenetical forcing will fuel this precipitation, but will
potentially wane some going into late morning/early afternoon with
approaching quick ridging providing subsidence aloft ahead of the
shortwave. Current thoughts are the bulk of this precipitation going
through Saturday afternoon will be snow with sleet most likely in
the far southeast portions of the forecast area. Freezing rain in
this area can definitely not be ruled out. However, higher
confidence currently exists in more snow/sleet with forecast
soundings displaying a warm nose between 800-700 mb that struggles
to get much warmer than 0 C with a deep, cold layer beneath in this
area. Precipitation begins to work its way north through the
afternoon as the main system approaches.

Saturday evening into Sunday morning: The main system arrives Sunday
evening, ramping up favorable conditions for heavy snowfall across
the vast majority of northern Michigan. Peak synoptic forcing is
expected between late evening and just after midnight as the
strongest forcing produced from the advancing shortwave is centered
overhead. This forcing should result in dynamical cooling of
profiles aloft, helping to lift/erode the warm nose over time across
portions of the area and resulting in an environment conducive for
heavy snowfall. Saturated profiles through a solid portion of the
environment are evident on forecast soundings, most importantly
between -12 and -20 C. This is also collocated with the strongest
synoptic lift, resulting in efficient dendrite formation to further
support heavy snowfall.

Impressive snowfall rates, even 1 to 2 inches per hour at times,
could materialize across the forecast area late Saturday evening
into very early Sunday morning. This heavy snowfall combined with
expected wind gusts exceeding 30 mph would cause extremely hazardous
travel conditions as visibilities could drop significantly within
heavy snow bands and blowing snow. Gusty winds overnight would also
bring the potential for drifting snow as well as potential lakeshore
flood concerns along Lake Michigan with mainly northeast winds.
Currently, widespread amounts near 8" are expected with a swath of
potentially 10"+ totals within the heaviest snowfall. Lower totals
are expected in the southeast where more sleet is expected and
freezing rain still remains a threat.

Otherwise, the system is expected to move out of the region Sunday
morning. High temperatures on Sunday will likely be in the upper
teens to low 20s across northern lower with temperatures a few
degrees cooler across eastern upper.

High Impact Weather Potential: Low for now...monitoring mid-week.

The period begins with a fairly zonal/low-amplitude pattern across
the CONUS with broad surface high pressure in place over much of the
eastern US. This coming week has the potential to be an active one
with multiple speed maxima/shortwaves embedded in the large scale
flow possibly moving through the Great Lakes. One weak wave could
bring some light precip to the area Monday, along with another
supporting a weak cyclone to our northwest that could bring more
precipitation to more northern parts of our forecast area on
Tuesday. Recent guidance hints at a stronger system potentially
impacting the region mid-week, but there is still considerable
uncertainty this far out. Otherwise, high temperatures across
northern Michigan appear to stay mostly in the 20s through much of
the work week. High temperatures on Tuesday could reach above
freezing as southerly winds bring warmer air into the region, but
otherwise temps are expected to remain below freezing.

locations early this morning. Some improvement heading through
later this morning as cigs lift. Even potential for low overcast

quickly tonight, with mounting support for a wintry mix of
precipitation to spread across northern lower Michigan.

Michigan and Lake Huron late tonight.

The strong storm system will continue to result in accumulating
snow and ice Saturday and Saturday night. Please see the latest

Gale force winds are expected to continue in many nearshore
waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron Saturday and Saturday
night. This will likely lead to a number of lakeshore flood
advisories.
