.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Impactful weather: Isolated to scattered thunderstorms with
continued moderate to heavy rainfall today. Severe storms not
expected. Strong cold advection leading to scattered rain and snow
showers tonight. Little to no accumulations in NNW/NW flow regimes.
Quite gusty today into this evening with lakeshore flood advisories
to be needed.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Upper troughing was the lee of the Rockies and Central and Northern
Plains early this morning, with an associated area of low pressure
lifting up into nrn Michigan attm. Strong theta-e convergence via a
50-55kt LLJ, coupled with DPVA and impressive upper divergence
overhead in right entrance region of a 140+kt jet, was resulting in
continued moderate to heavy rainfall along and north of a low level
convergence axis across NW and far nrn lower Michigan, as well as
far SE sections of Chip and Mack counties of eastern upper. The more
intense rainfall was associated with an analyzed area of 850-700mb
frontogenesis in this region. An areal flood watch has already been
issued (and may need to be expanded), as well as an areal flood
warning within the watch for much of this area, where rainfall
totals thus far have been 2-4 inches. There have been reports of
water flowing over some roads, and many areas of ponding of water in
low lying areas. Further upstream, across MT into the Dakotas, high
pressure was becoming the dominant feature, with cold advection
occurring all across the Plains and Upper Midwest.

The heaviest rainfall, tight thermal gradient/FGEN region may pivot
more NW into this morning, as a shortwave carves further into the
upper troughing, amplifying the overall upper air pattern. The
shortwave however, will eventually lift NE through the western and
nrn Great Lakes through the day, shoving the FGEN eastward with time,
making the heavier rainfall more transient with time. The same
eastward progression goes for the impressive aforementioned forcing
components at play. All this said, periods of heavier showers and
some additional thunderstorm activity will bring an additional 1-3
inches of rain for much of nrn Michigan through today. This is the
reasoning behind keeping the areal flood watch and warning through
5 pm today.

The low pressure will depart east by early afternoon, with the
associated strong cold front allowing colder temperatures to move
into the region through the day and evening. Low level temperatures
become cold enough for the development of scattered lake effect rain
showers, which will see snow mix in through tonight, or totally
changeover to snow in many interior locales. Lake effect parameters
are not very impressive however. Inversion heights only get up to
4500-5500 feet this evening (while many areas of mostly rain at this
point). Inversion heights fall through the overnight hours. Maybe a
few tenths of wet snow can accumulate in grassy areas tonight.

Finally, behind the cold front, the pressure gradient tightens up
decently again. A sharp wind shift to out of the NW is expected,
with afternoon gusts reaching 25-35 mph. The high water levels and
moderately high waves may lead to minor lakeshore flooding for
coastal areas of primarily NW lower Michigan.

Highs today will range from the low to mid 40s in eastern upper, to
as warm as the lower half of the 60s across the far SE CWA near
Saginaw Bay. Lows tonight will fall into the middle 20s to lower
30s.

.SHORT TERM...(Saturday through Sunday)

High impact weather potential: Minimal.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Behind the departing storm system, 850 mb temperatures of -4 to -7C
producing delta t/s of 16 to 20C will be plenty enough to develop
lake effect rain/snow through the rest of the forecast period for
portions of eastern upper and northwest lower Michigan with
northwesterly to north-northwesterly winds through Saturday morning.
Any showers during the day Saturday will only produce about 0.05" of
QPF. Shouldn't see any lake effect Sunday as high pressure builds in
from the northern Great Plains and 925 mb winds become light and
variable with a more anticyclonic flow...probably won't see any
precip during the day Sunday, but with the cold 850 mb temps and
another approaching storm system, mostly cloudy skies will for sure
remain throughout Sunday. A developing low pressure system on the
lee side of the Rockies will begin it's approach to the Great Lakes
region with the low forecast at this time to pass through the thumb
area of lower Michigan. This track would have the associated
occluded front and warm front impacting the forecast area during
the afternoon hours Sunday with some light to moderate rain showers
and some areas (mostly eastern upper and the higher terrain of
northern lower) mixing with snow or completely changing over to snow.

Winds will be light and variable over much of the forecast
period...with the exception of the Grand Traverse Bay region
Saturday afternoon...where winds could be a bit stronger, out of the
northwest with some gusts of 15-20 mph possible. Winds continue to
be light Sunday, but begin to come from the southeast as the
aforementioned storm system approaches the forecast area.

Saturday and Sunday's high temperatures will be in the upper 30s to
mid 40s...while the low Saturday night drops down into the mid to
upper 20s.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

High impact weather potential: Some snow possible Sunday night
through Tuesday, mainly during the overnight hours...no major
accumulations expected.

As the next storm system continues it's approach towards the Great
Lakes region...rain and snow will continue through Monday as this
system progresses towards the northeast into Ontario. The weather
pattern remains progressive with only quick breaks here in there
between shortwaves pinwheeling through the broad longwave trough, or
other storm systems. Daytime highs will remain below normal with
highs only reaching into the upper 30s to mid 40s throughout the
long term period. Nighttime lows will be mainly in the 20s.

A tight pressure gradient with LLWS will briefly loosen up as low
pressure crosses nrn Michigan through Friday morning. Wind
directions will be highly variable as this low crosses the region.
The pressure gradient tightens back up through Friday behind this
low pressure and it's associated strong cold front, and winds will
shift sharply out of the NW and become quite gusty. The cold
advection will bring some scattered lighter lake effect rain showers
this evening, which will gradually mix with, or changeover to snow
through tonight and Saturday. Higher pressure moves in late Friday
night into Saturday, which will allow winds to subside.

CIGS will largely be LIFR through most of Friday, in continued
moderate to heavy rainfall that will gradually shift over into NE
lower/APN, before strong cold advection brings improving CIGS to MVFR
Friday evening, and high end MVFR/low end VFR late Friday night.
