...Unsettled weather continues...

High Impact Weather Potential: Another round of rain/snow showers
tonight. Round of rain Saturday afternoon. Gusty winds continue
with gales/lakeshore flooding expected Saturday.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Sharp upper trough axis stretches down
through the western Great Lakes this afternoon with a few pieces
of short-wave energy continuing to move through the mean trough.
Latest wave (and subtle surface trough) is pushing out into Lake
Huron carrying a broken line of showers with it. Behind it,
subsidence/drying has thinned/cleared out cloud cover to a
respectable degree...more so than expected...bringing a fair
amount of sunshine for many areas. There is some hints of lake
effect rotating through central and eastern Upper Michigan and
northern Lake Michigan. But in all, not a bad afternoon out there.

Upstream, next piece of short-wave energy is sliding through
Wisconsin along with more showers...all heading our way.

Short-wave (and larger scale trough axis) rotates through the
region tonight followed by brief short-wave ridging/surface high
pressure taking hold Saturday morning. That will be short lived
however as the next strong wave digs into the northern Plains
Saturday afternoon and spins up a fairly strong surface low in the
Upper Midwest. Increasing S/SW flow with this sytem will bring our
next round of rainfall into northern Michigan Saturday afternoon,
as well as very gusty winds.

Details: Relatively quiet start to the evening...albeit a bit cool
with some wind. But next short-wave and subtle surface trough will
be crossing into the region during the course of the evening,
along with another batch of showers that will slide
through...roughly from mid evening into the overnight hours.
P-type will once again be at issue as surface temps drop back into
the middle and upper 30s this evening...likely resulting in a
rain/snow mix, or just snow in the higher elevations and some
light accumulations. Precip diminishes overnight, but leaving
behind some W/SW flow lake effect precip through the tip of the
mitt and Straits region.

Largely uneventful Saturday morning...outside of any ongoing light
lake induced precip as mentioned above. But, strong warm advection
forcing kicks in later in the morning and through the afternoon
and will bring a band of expanding precip into northern Michigan.
This should be mostly all rain for us, as surface temps warm well
into the 40s prior to arrival of precip. That said, there may be a
short window of opportunity for some snow or mix through the
higher elevations early on...owing to dry lower level air and
evap cooling early on. Will have to keep an eye on this for any
surprise snow accumulations.

Otherwise, very gusty winds develop through the day. Gales
anticipated on the lakes and some lakeshore flooding is possible
along western Mackinac county in southerly flow. Will issue
headlines as appropriate. Wind advisory criteria gusts are also a
possibility along the immediate lake Michigan coast. But will
refrain from issuing those at this juncture.

.SHORT TERM...(Saturday night through Monday)

High impact weather potential: Gales on the Great Lakes continue
Saturday night.

Pattern synopsis/forecast: Broad troughing continues across the
Great Lakes through the entirety of the forecast period Saturday
night through Monday with the primary focus revolving around the
Saturday night through Sunday time frame as low pressure is expected
to develop across the Pac NW/northern plains on the nose of a 150+
kt jet streak driving into the northwestern CONUS. This slowly
deepening system is expected to progress east/northeastward through
the weekend...falling to ~995mb as it nears James Bay. Initial
isentropically driven precip chances expected to be ongoing across
the northern third of the forecast area Saturday evening with
additional cold frontal driven precip chances arriving Saturday
night. Gusty winds will also be the rule across the vast majority of
northern Michigan, especially Saturday night - highest on and near
the Great Lakes. Cold air advection follows for Sunday through with
cold air becoming entrenched locally at least early next week.

Primary forecast concerns/challenges: PoPs and precip type;
occasionally gusty winds.

Low pressure Saturday morning centered over the Dakotas quickly
treks eastward across the Upper Mississippi Valley into northern
Ontario by Saturday night. Initial isentropically driven precip
chances are likely to continue across the northern third of the
forecast area at the start of the period, however will be quickly
shifting northward leaving the majority of northern Michigan in the
system's dry slot Saturday evening. By Sunday night, additional
shower chances arrive in conjunction with the arrival of the
system's cold front, perhaps enhanced at times behind the front as
much cooler air aloft rushes in behind fropa. Some lake effect
potential continues during the day Sunday as H8 temps continually
cool to around -6 C by Sunday afternoon. While this precipitation
should largely begin as liquid, a mix with or change over to all
snow showers is certainly possible across interior locations by
Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Guidance suggests beyond this
that a death of moisture and incoming high pressure shuts of lake
effect activity, although find this hard to believe given simple
over-lake instability and our tendency for lake effect clouds/precip
to hang on much longer than often depicted.

Perhaps of greater issue than precip chances will be another round
of gusty winds through Saturday night. Frequent gale gusts expected
over the Great Lakes, and along the shorelines. Slightly lower gusts
inland, but certainly will still feel gusty out there. Somewhat
lower gusts in the 15-25 mph range for the daytime hours Sunday, but
still enough to make mid-upper 40 degree highs feel cooler than
that. Similar temps expected Monday...ranging through the 40s for
daytime highs.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Friday)

High impact weather potential: Minimal.

Cool and occasionally wet weather will be the rule through the
majority of the forecast period as the large scale pattern remains
fairly progressive. Hard to get overly specific with details at this
point given extended models continuing to struggle with the timing
and strength of embedded disturbances. Slightly moderating
temperatures then likely make a run at northern Michigan toward mid-
week as the tightest baroclinic zone shifts northward as the pattern
reloads with another area of low pressure expected to pass nearby
mid-late week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon)

Cloud cover has thinned out a bit more than anticipated behind a
departing short-wave pushing into Lake Huron...with VFR conditions
now expected through the rest of the afternoon. Another wave will
be sliding across the region tonight and will bring another round
of rain and snow showers across the region...and MVFR conditions.
That moves out by Saturday morning.

Warmer air returns on Saturday. Another round of rainfall will
develop and spread into the region Saturday afternoon.

Another round of very gusty winds develop on Saturday as another
storm system lifts up through the Upper Midwest. Gale warnings

get a reprieve from any additional marine headlines...for a few
days anyway.

At 1236 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was located over Pellston,
moving northeast at 30 mph.

Winds in excess of 30 mph and penny size hail are possible with this
storm.
